Sometimes I just really love the normal well-adjusted nhl players especially in contrast to the ones who aren’t. Like wow you have a happy and healthy little family with a beautiful wife and kid(s), and your hobbies are normal and unassuming; that is wonderful! Your teammate over there has to do ritualistic killings before every game because he thinks it makes him play better

feeling so many feelings about this michael bunting article I don't even know where to begin other than to say that kyle dubas' belief in michael bunting is written like one of the greatest love stories of all time.

a classic "he was there to see someone else but couldn't take his eyes off him" story

and then he rearranges his travel plans to see him again

and from there decides hey we're gonna draft this kid to the ohl despite no one knowing him at all. because I have a good feeling about him. and he was right. and then he got to know him and love him in all his antagonistic glory.

and when he became the one that got away via the nhl draft he said well I'll keep my eye on him. and as soon as he became available again he brought him home.

and then things got messy. and they both found themselves in new cities with new teams. and once again he got away.

but as soon as he became available again dubas said you will be mine. thank you very much. why didn't things work out? there are greater forces at play here.

because he's still the same player he was on the don mills flyers. he's more mature and he's honed his skills and he's weaponized his antagonism, but he's the same guy. and once he jumps out at you it's hard to put him back. once you love him you can't just leave him.

so it is a great story because that is michael bunting for you and because sometimes love is an wunderkind gm and the feral dog of a player he plucked out of obscurity and placed on a line with evgeni malkin.

It’s always been interesting to me that Connor is extremely aware of his awkwardness. Like, he’s talked in interviews about being an awkward guy and naturally being quiet and introverted. His brother makes jokes about it. I think a lot of people have this perception of hockey players as lacking self awareness but I think he’s actually generally pretty self conscious and that’s compelling to me. His family has said he’s been shy since he was a little kid and you really see that in his demeanor. The fact that he was named captain as a shy 19 year old is still batshit to me.

no, exactly!! his self-awareness is so interesting to me. i think there are easy comparisons to be made to sid here, who is often kind of endearingly awkward, versus connor’s self-conscious shyness which reads infinitely more painful.

i have this thing i’ve talked about a little bit before that i call The Biz Meter, in which i use the most hockey bro of all hockey bros, the final boss of hockey bros (biz nasty) to gauge the way a player generally engages with and fits into hockey culture. compare sid’s energy in this spittin chiclets interview with connor’s in this one — sid is comfortable, in his element, and enjoying himself, and connor is Straight Up Not Having A Good Time Right Now. he is uncomfortable and awkward and very sensitive to being teased, he is extremely aware he is being those things, and he would like to go home please. don’t talk about whether he likes expensive sushi or he’ll kill everyone in this room and then himself. and it’s not like this is really that unfamiliar an environment for connor! how many biz types has connor interacted with on a near daily basis since he was a child? and he’s still not good at it! connor scores so low on the biz meter he’s practically off the charts. i am in love with him.

naming him captain was clearly a “generational talent needs the c as the youngest captain in the league” moment a la sid, and while i don’t necessarily think he’s a bad leader or that he didn’t grow into the role over time, i do think it was probably a nightmare for little baby connor to be thrown into the nhl and asked almost immediately to be a leader in it rather than giving him someone for guidance on his own. poor connie. those narratives are heavy, huh, bud? ah, well. you’ll shoulder ‘em.
