How dare you EXPOSE me at 5:18 am on this good Monday
The polar bear in Copenhagen Zoo gets a cow head about once a week.
Me: Awwwwwww, they’re playing together!
Me: Huh. I hope he doesn’t eat that poor cow.
Me: …
That’s exactly my thought process while looking at this
I was trying to figure out why tf that cow was in the water… then…
I thought I was seeing things for a moment
Like I really didn’t think that was a severed cow’s head
Art!
Whoahhhhhhhhhhjh
i had such high hopes god damn
I love how we’ve seen so many cute animal buddy posts that we all forgot that polar bears are fucking brutal predators.
@why-animals-do-the-thing
Thought you’d enjoy this psuedo-buddy post.
Oh, man, yes. I’d seen the first two photos but not the rest. This is from the Copenhagen Zoo, a place which continually horrifies the western world by using whole carcasses and identifiable bits as enrichment for their residents.
I love @rj4gui4r‘s comment above because, yeah, we’re so used to seeing animal friend posts that we now automatically assume predator + prey animal (even ones from different climates!) is gonna be cute, not something involving actual natural behaviors like predation. That says something about the internet.
So I was telling my parents about this tweet, and now this is what my dad is calling him.

Things I Learned in College that I Didn’t Earn a Degree For (Alternative Title: Things It Took Me Too Long to Figure Out) 1. Get rid of anybody who makes you feel like you’re hard to love. Get rid of anyone who makes it seem like they’re doing you a favor by putting up with you. They’re not. Hang on instead to the people who love you even when it’s not easy. 2. Yes, you can wear leggings as pants. Yes, you can wear crop tops. Yes, you can wear tight skirts and dresses. Forget all the people who made you feel like you were too fat for those clothes. 3. It’s okay to want your mommy when you’re 22 and it’s three a.m. and you don’t feel like yourself. She’ll pick up the phone. 4. People love you. 5. You are capable of killing centipedes and spiders and of catching mice. The only thing that’s stopping you from being able to live alone are the pieces of clothing you own that you can’t get out of by yourself. 6. Popcorn is not a meal, stop trying to make it one. 7. When someone gives you a compliment, say thank you. Don’t deflect. They wouldn’t say such nice things if they weren’t genuine, because what’s in it for them? Nothing. 8. Life is not a fucking competition. If you ever feel yourself doing something because you know it’s going to tear someone else down, quit doing it. Support is rarer than it should be. 9. Let people like what they like and do what they do, as long as it’s not hurting anyone. Don’t like it? Cool. Now shut the fuck up because it’s not about you. 10. When it comes to new people, trust your instincts. They’re almost always correct. 11. Do yourself a favor and learn how you like to dress and do your makeup and hair. Do yourself up in whatever way feels best to you. It’s incredibly liberating to think you are beautiful. 12. Friends aren’t needlessly cruel. They won’t point out you’re not naturally skinny like the rest of your friends, or refuse to say anything nice about you, or imply that you’re stupid. Anyone who does do those things isn’t your friend and you should get rid of them. Immediately. 13. No one cares about your sex life (or impressive lack of), nor are they going to judge your worth by it. So stop using it as a measure of your self-worth. 14. Quit acting like you have forever. Your window of time to do anything gets shorter every day. Make friends with that person, say that thing, eat that slice of pie before somebody else does. 15. Unless you’re trying to win an argument, stop saying, “No, because…” You don’t have to justify not wanting to do something or feeling a certain way. “No” is an answer on its own. 16. So is “Yes.” But always follow through. 17. Be nice to people. Compliment a sweater or a scarf. Let the elderly on the train before you. Be nice to people because it feels good to not be an asshole, but also because every single one of us is going through something. Dealing with bullshit is a human experience, and sometimes all it takes is a small action to lighten someone’s burden or brighten someone’s world. 18. It’s okay to feel creeped out by weird dudes. You don’t have to feel guilty about it. It’s not your fault they stare or make lewd comments. All that matters is that you stay safe. 19. You can always count on your home team, no matter how far away from them you are. And as part of someone else’s home team, you always have to be prepared to go to bat for somebody else. 20. The people who are still in your life even though you thought you lost them for good at some point are there for a reason. Don’t try to figure out what the reason is. Just be grateful. 21. You are good at things. 22. You are good. 23. It’s okay to have little indulgences. Buy the new bra, drink the third beer, spend the whole day making cookies. You deserve a break. 24. There will always be opportunities. Whether or not it’s the one you’re looking for, you will never be devoid of opportunities.

“Ten years ago I was the subject of a documentary called ‘No Impact Man.’ It was about my attempt to live for an entire year with as little environmental impact as possible. My family rode bikes everywhere. We used no paper products. And the film got quite a lot of attention. I wasn’t used to the success. I’d written two history books before then. And they were good books, but they didn’t have much of a readership. Now all of the sudden I was being interviewed, and celebrated, and invited on Good Morning America. And then people started attacking me. Gawker wrote several articles calling me self-righteous, and an opportunist, and said I was imposing my values on my family. People said I didn’t care about the environment and only wanted to make money. And all the attention really caused a crisis for me. For the first time, I had a personhood that was completely different than my person. And that was exhausting. When someone called me a hero, I wanted to prove them right. When someone called me a devil, I wanted to prove them wrong. It took a lot of self-examination to realize that I was neither. There is a fullness to a person that is gigantic and nuanced and indefinable. It was equally impossible to be a hero or a devil. I couldn’t be contained by a single word.”

Some light in the darkness that is Gaming news right now
gaming is SO IMPORTANT for so many disabled people (myself included). There’s not many hobbies that have the range of interactivity and engagement that gaming has, while still being something someone can do with little movement or motor control.
I’ve met a few people who were very disapproving of my gaming hobby (was literally told to “go read a book” in a snooty way by one of them) and it frustrates heck out of me that they can’t see how important and fun gaming can be. Gaming isn’t passive like a lot of other hobbies recommended for disabled folks. Gaming is something to get pumped about and something that you can get better at! You can improve your gaming skills and feel accomplished!
if it weren’t for video games I would be a much, much more unhappy and unfulfilled person.
This is why its SO important to make gaming accessible to disabled people.
This new ‘trend’ of strobing when hit [Destiny/Assassins’ Creed to name a few] is very detrimental to anyone with a seizure disorder that is effected by strobing. A lot of people with motor disorders often have visual disorders too.
Developers really need to make flashy visual effects optional or toggled on/off in menus; not left as a fixed point.
Gaming is SO important to help with my motor skills and comprehension skills and making it inaccessible to some audiences is really detrimental.
^^^Really important commentary
video games are sometimes the only thing that will help keep me sane.
I’m crying : ’ ). Videogames are important for all ages and degrees of abled people. My grandma definitely has kept a somewhat sharp mind since she plays golden sun and pokemon feverishly, though apparently she was stuck at the Sky Pillar in Ruby for two months (arthritis problems).
i just wish we could get more games that relied less on violence and fighting but Diablo fuckin rules and i’m so glad this person found a way to make it work for them.
we need to make sure all the disabled have the tools and support they need to live the lives they want to.
There is a charity called Able Gamers that helps people with varying disabilities and gives them the chance to play video games. They work both with caregivers, gamers themselves and video game developers (both indie and mainstream)to help make video games more accessible on a software level as well as through assistive technology like Ken here is using. I urge everyone to check them out and donate if possible or spread the word about their foundation!
