john lennon and yoko ono released unfinished music no: 2 life with the lions in may 1969 as the second installment in their experimental avant-garde series, serving as the debut release for the beatles' short-lived experimental label zapple, the album continued the couple's project of documenting their shared personal life and experiences as direct conceptual art.

side one consists of 'cambridge 1969', a 26-minute live avant-garde performance recorded on the 2nd of march, 1969, festuring vocal wailing from ono alongisde feedback-laden guitar work from lennon, with later contributions from free-jazz saxophonist john tchicai and percussionist john stevens.

side two shifts to field recordings made at queen charlotte's hospital in london, capturing moments like 'no bed for beatle john', where the couple chants press clippings about themselves, and 'baby's heartbeat', an audio recording of their unborn child before ono tragically suffered a miscarriage in november 1968.

the album concludes with 'two minutes silence' in memory of their lost child, followed by 'radio play', a twelve minute recording of static and tuning sounds as ono adjusts a radio dial. captured during a tumultous period of media scrutiny and police harassment, the release stands as one of lennon's most raw, uncomprosiing, and deeply personal experimental efforts.

fats domino and dave bartholomew wrote "ain't that a shame" in 1955, and it held special significance for john lennon as the very first rock 'n' roll song he ever learned to play.

his mother, julia, originally taught him the chords on a banjo before he transitioned to playing the guitar. lennon and mccartney frequently jammed on the track during their early years with the quarrymen, and the two briefly attempted it again during their final 1974 studio jam session in los angeles.

lennon self-produced this official version on the 22nd of october, 1974, for his cover album rock 'n' roll, featuring a backing band that included jesse ed davis on guitar, klaus voormann on bass, and jim keltner on drums.

capitol records originally intended to release the track as a single backed with "slippin' and slidin'," even going as far as distributing promotional copies to radio stations before pulling the release worldwide except in mexico .

on this date, cynthia lilian lennon (née powell) was born .

cynthia was born in blackpool, lancashire, as the youngest of three children of charles edwin powell and lilian anne powell (neé roby).

lilian powell, her mother, was sent to blackpool after world war two was declared on the third of september, 1939, one week before cynthia's birth. they stayed in a bed and breakfast on the blackpool seafront before moving to a two-bedroomed house in hoylake, a middle-class town on the wirral peninsula where cynthia grew up.

at the age of 12, she was then accepted into liverpool's junior art school, and in 1957 started as a pupil at liverpool college of art. it was there she met john lennon, whom she married in 1962. they had a son, julian, before divorcing in 1968.

john lennon for the book , 'the penguin john lennon', which was published in 1966. the collection combined lennon's two works, 'in his own write' (1964) and 'a spaniard in the works' (1965).

no definitive day for when the images were taken - however i believe the photoshoot occured sometime in december, 1965.

john lennon recounting his famous august 23rd 1974 UFO sighting from the rooftop balcony of his apartment at 434 east 52nd street in new york city, where he was living with may pang during his 'lost weekend' period.

around 9:00 PM that evening, lennon and pang stepped onto the terrace overlooking the east river and saw a silent, saucer-shaped object hovering roughly 100 feet away. he described it as a dark grey disc surrounded by blinking white lights around its perimeter with a red light on top.

the event made such an impression on lennon that he referenced it on the liner notes of his 1974 album, walls and bridges ("On the 23rd Dec. at 9 o'clock I saw a U.F.O. - J.L.") and included the line "There's UFOs over New York and I ain't too surprised" in his 1975 song, 'nobody told me'. john lennon and yoko ono recorded unfinished music no: 1: two virgins during an all-night session on may 3rd, 1968, at lennon's kenwood home while his wife cynthia was away on holiday. the recording session remarked the official beginning of lennon and ono's romantic relationship, concluding at dawn after they completed the tape.

created in lennon's attic studio using two-track tape on a brennel machine, the album features spontaneous vocal improvisations, amplifier feedback, distorted instrumentation, tape loops, birdsong, and snippets of vintage 78rpm shellac records. lennon's childhood friend pete shotton assisted in making several of the tape loops used across the tracks.

the album generated substantial controversy upon its release primarily due to its cover art, which featured a full-length nude photograph of lennon and ono taken in the basement of ringo starr's london flat. distributed in brown paper bags to censor the image, the release served as lennon's first major experimental venture outside of the beatles, laying conceptual groundwork for his later avant-garde work, such as 'revolution 9'.

john lennon wrote '#9 dream' after waking up with the melody and chorus refrain stuck in his head during the recording of his 1974 album, 'walls and bridges'. the song actually evolved from an earlier home demo titled "so long," which borrowed its string arrangement from a cover of jimmy cliff's 'many rivers to cross' that lennon had produced for harry nilsson.

its famous nonsense chorus phrase, 'Ah! böwakawa poussé, poussé," was originally written as "pussy, pussy." capitol records executive al coury warned lennon that radio stations wouldn't play the track with that phrasing, so backing vocalist lori burton suggested tweaking it to sound like french.

to achieve the track's floating atmosphere, studio engineer jimmy iovine heavily processed lennon's lead vocals using extreme echo, vocal doubling, and tape delay.

when the lyrics describe voices calling out his name, may pang's whispered response of 'john' was recorded, reversed, and layered into the mix.

released as the album's second single, the song fittingly peaked at number nine on the billboard hot 100 in early 1975 .

on this date, julia lennon (née stanley) married alfred lennon .

julia stanley first met alfred lennon in 1928, although her family disapproved of the man, they courted throughout the 1930s and finally married on the third of december, 1938.

alfred later said that julia had dared him to marry her one night at the pub and the challenge was accepted, the wedding taking place at the bolton street register office.

neither of their families had known that they were intending to be married . the couple met at noon at the office and were then joined by their two witnesses: alfred's brother, sydney, and a friend of julia's, a cinema usherette at the trocadero on liverpool's camden street.

the couple ate a meal of roast chicken at reece's, a restaurant in nearby claton square, where john and cynthia would also later celebrate their wedding.

the couple watched amickey rooney film at the cinema but spent their wedding night apart at their respective homes - upon her return home, julia threw her marriage certificate down in front of her family and exclaimed: "There, I've done it! I've married him!"
