Dragon Age 2: The Fall of House Tethras
...Bartrand believed the (lyrium) idol sang to him and forced his men to eat lyrium to make them hear the song...

Why don’t we let the guy whose every plan could be reasonably construed as an abstract suicide attempt take a crack at it

hawke: wait guys we can’t flee the city yet i called for my servants to bring over a carriage full of my valuables and it isn’t here yet
anders: sweetheart i’m trying to do a revolution here and you’re killing the vibe
hawke: that all black revolution wardrobe doesn’t grow on trees anders

i do genuinely appreciate the fact that meredith as a visibly much older woman character that has 0 motivations to anything related to "lost" youth or younger women or god forbid some sort of love entanglement with a man and instead her character motivation and arc proves that fascism can also be a women-dominated field! 👍
anders dragon age. what a man. he's a former warden. a apostate. he's a healer for the most downtrodden of kirkwall, openly using his magic to heal despite knowing the consequences (death, or circle abuse). he's a victim of abuse, a survivor of templars and pure torment. he's funny, caring to the core. he had a cat. he lives in a sewer. he loves and has loved even knowing what comes when mages desire basic human activities. he's the embodiment of justice, desires freedom for all mages. he destroys the source of abuse for many mages, the chantry, and accepts death if you want to kill him. he's just ... my beloved.

i love when characters don't get to die
this is about villains/antagonists/general horrible people who finally face up to what they've done. especially if they try to pull the good ole "Dramatically Does One Good Thing To Redeem Themselves And Dies," but despite their best efforts they DON'T die. like yes motherfucker there's no easy way out for you, there's only the slow, awkward and painful process of learning to live with yourself. of learning to live with the weight of your mistakes. you get a second chance regardless of if you think you deserve it. you get to try to make amends and do good. you get to live.
this is also about every self-sacrificial bastard of a protagonist who puts themselves in harm's way again and again and again to a wildly unhealthy and unnecessary degree. see, there's something so compelling to me in the unspoken suicidality of repeated heroic self-sacrifice, and the thing about implicitly suicidal characters is that i want them to live. and that can be used to make a death so much more tragic and impactful - noble sacrifices and last stands certainly can and have been done beautifully - but there's also something special to me in seeing such a character make it. because you'd die for the people you love, yes, but would you live for them?
There's something about Warden Surana specifically that consumes my brain more than anything. You're an elf, so you serve humans. You're a mage, so you serve mankind. You're a Grey Warden, so you serve as everyone's protector and must die for them. Here is a person raised their entire life taught that they are lesser than those around them and must live to serve. Here is a person taught that their wants, their freedom, simply cannot happen. Yet... you can survive. Surana can look the ultimate sacrifice in the face and refuse to make that. The lamb raised for sacrifice runs from the altar. What does that mean for them as a person? To finally break free from everything they've been told? Isn't it harder to live than just lay down and die as ordered... there is so much to explore there ugh. Everyone should tell me more about Suranas that survive please and thank you

fucked up how for a circle mage warden the joining is just the harrowing Again. secret test you have to take to become a full Member but u also don’t get to opt out and go be a regular person anymore once you’ve been tagged as Part Of It. nobody will tell you what the test entails but like half the people who take it never come back. and even when you pass the life you’ve earned yourself is all but guaranteed to be short and painful with a miserable lonely death. heart<3
it's VITAL to leliana's well-being and fragile mental state you constantly put the love of her life in near-death experiences. she needs this to survive. it's that critical.
