Okay, this is true, but to be fair Zuko is also 75% of Iroh’s impulse control. Zuko is impulsive as all get out, but is able to get his shit together when everyone else around him is drinking Dumbass Juice (The Boiling Rock, Sozin’s Comet, etc.). Iroh is kind of the same way in that he took the liberty of ‘Angsty Nephew Wrangler’ for the majority of season 1 and 2, but Zuko did his fair share of carrying the brain cell between him and Iroh: 

Example 1: Iroh is a shopaholic Stuff Gremlin and the fact that he was probably in charge of the ship’s funds should be very concerning. 

Example 2: 

Iroh: *takes a nap for ten fucking years and is way too comfortable being naked in public* 

Zuko: please act like a human, I’m begging you 

Example 3: almost immediately after becoming fugitives, Zuko was the one trying to find food and be productive while Iroh made the Big Smart Brain Decision to make a might-be-but-might-not-be poisonous flower on the off chance that it would make some dope ass tea. 

And did he learn from his mistake????? 

Example 4: “What are you doing firebending your tea?!” is a good fucking question, Zuko 

What I’m saying is, that yes, Iroh was full of sage wisdom and did function as Zuko’s impulse control a good 90% of the time, but Zuko had to get his impulse control from somewhere. 

(bonus: In which Iroh conveniently ignores his nephew’s crime addiction because it gets him snacks)

Iroh: ‘my nephew is obviously stealing these things and not talking about his issues, this habit he’s developing will lead him down the wrong path’ 

also Iroh: ‘okay, he can crime a little bit’ 

Jet: Hey, what’s good? Wanna Be Bi(tm) Do Crimes(tm)? 

Iroh, internally: ‘Zuko do it, Zuko DO IT, I’M HUNGRY’

Look, I have the nicest coworkers and derby friends in the world. They recently threw me a surprise bridal shower, and I tell you, it was a HECCIN BAMBOOZLE. Again, they're great people and I love them.

But I am also a very anxious person (and wedding planning doesn't help). Part of my job involves balloons, and just the THOUGHT of blowing them up throws me into a cold sweat because they MIGHT explode. If I'm not inflating them myself, I have to walk to the other side of the building so I don't have a panic attack over the sound of them expanding. In general, loud unexpected noises are absolute havoc on my nerves.

That being said: if you have a friend like this, DO NOT fill a room with people and scream SURPRISE at them. Maybe let them come in and ask what's going on. Gently tell them the party is for them. Because they absolutely will not be able to enjoy said party if they have to spend the whole time working through a panic attack.

I'm not sharing this as a complaint, but rather as a caution to anyone with an anxious friend. Throw your friends parties, by all means. Just please don't scream when they walk in.

Once again, a neural net tries to name cats

Last year I trained a neural net to generate new names for kittens, by giving it a list of over 8,000 existing cat names to imitate. Starting from scratch, with zero knowledge of English or any context for the words and letter combinations it was trying out, it tried to predict what letters might be found in cat names, and in which order. Its names ranged from the strange to the completely nonsensical to the highly unfortunate (Retchion, Hurler, and Trickles were some of its suggestions). Without knowledge of English beyond its list of cat names, it didn’t know what letter combinations to avoid.

So I decided to revisit the cat-naming problem, this time using a neural net that had a lot more context. GPT-2, trained by OpenAI on a huge chunk of the internet, knows which words and letter combinations tend to be used together on the English-language internet. It also has (mostly) figured out which words and letter combinations to avoid, at least in some contexts (though it does tend to suddenly switch contexts, and then, yikes).

When I trained GPT-2 on the list of cat names using Max Woolf’s colab notebook, it still retained a lot of what it had learned from the rest of the internet. Gone were the strange names like “Tilly-Mapper” and “Balllucidoux” - it had a bunch of real words it could use instead. Here are some of the names it came up with - and the Morris Animal Refuge (who you may remember from that time they used neural net names for their guinea pigs) has given some of these names to some highly adoptable kittens.
