I hate a lot of the generalized opinions people have about Zuko and Azula and Mai especially because most normal people will never comprehend just how much abuse and indoctrination fucks up your brain and perception of the world and they shouldn't bcs I'd never wish that on anyone. People dismiss almost all other characters traumas too bcs they don't understand what it's like to experience these things (and I don't wish that on anyone) but I'll be talking about what I know from experience rn so I'm not covering everyone.
Seriously, there was hardly any other way for those kids to turn out with what they lived in. Living under abuse can make you live in survival mode for years and years with no real way to get out of it because you don't know a life beyond it. If you do what is expected, you'll be safe and usually there's nothing you can see beyond that promise of safety. It's also difficult when your abusive parents provide you 'love' however toxic it is because when you don't really get that from another source, that's all you can hope for and you'd do anything for it, even if it destroys you. It's difficult to understand the desperation of it all if you've never experienced it.
Similarly for Katara, I genuinely hate how people chastise her for bringing up her mother. Can you freaking imagine the woman who raised you and took care of you dying just like that? Not only is the depth of loss an incredibly difficult process because trust me, you don't process the loss at once. Personally, it keeps coming to you again and again. It doesn't register at once that they're gone and you'll never see them again. Katara didn't just lose her mother that day, she lost her entire livelihood as she knew it. She lost her innocence and her childhood in more ways than one. She didn't just lose the physical embodiment of Kya but she lost her mother's cooking, her mother's stories, her mother's specific way of affection, her mother's protection (random examples bcs we don't know much abt Kya). Nothing will ever bring that back. Nothing could ever recreate that.
A lot of people who say these things do not know how severely traumatizing these experiences like abuse, death, losing your culture, not having agency in your own life and many more actually feels and they shouldn't know bcs its not something I'd ever wish on people. The you before and the you after experiences like that can practically be two seperate people. You will never be the same again. Especially when you experience it super young. It fucks up your brain so severely.
Point is, they're very ignorant takes usually and it pmo all the time.
I lowkey think it'd be a fucking hilarious fanfic idea to have heated rivalry x some sort of urban fantasy media au fanfic. Like what I'm thinking rn is Percy Jackson especially bcs it'd be funny for the tl like imagine Ilya and Shane going through Rose Landry situationship drama while Typhon is storming through the US (absolutely not accurate to any timeline established in dither series or timeline overlaps, I'm spitballing). Imagine Scott Hunter winning the New York cup a week after the battle of Manhattan.
Any urban fantasy au would be freaking hilarious bcs I just think Ilya would have the funniest reaction. Like damn I already got enough drama being a gay man who hasn't been able to come out and love who he lives tf do you mean magic is real and monsters exist.
Anyway I only even came up with this bcs I mostly read or watch fantasy stuff and it's very rare for me to consume pure romance due to preferences but I rly love heated rivalry so I think this would be funny. If anyone has fics drop em down I wanna read them
to me katara is a trans girl and for a long time identified as a straight girl. and then a bit after the war ends aang offhandedly mentions how he's not A Boy, at least not mostly and not most of the time. and katara goes oooh okay and mentally updates her status from "heterosexual" to "bisexual"
I was so scared for a second bcs I thought Aang was talking to Katara and disvaluing her being a Trans girl and I was like AANG WOULD NEVER. Then I got it. Cool headcanon :)
Okay you know who else Malini and Priya vaguely remind me of? Akemi ans Mizu respectively.
Now obviously, Priya and Mizu are not that similar so it's much more of a superficial comparison. Moreover, Malini is more motivated by revenge. Still, yall see what I'm getting at right?
Malini and Akemi are both high-ranking princesses who will manipulate others for the sake of their freedom/survival in a world where women have no rights at all. They're good at getting what they want and have older male relatives who want to hurt them. Even the way they manipulate is similar.
Actually never getting over that one comic that came out of the atla live action where Azula was the one who got Zuko his ship.
The last time they saw each other, she risked leaving the palace in disguise and getting him a ship. I like to hc she also pulled some strings to get Iroh on the ship and mildly suggested to Iroh about the crew (in the movie I think it's literally the 41st division Zuko wanted to spare which is probably the only other good addition). She even told him to change his bandages so he wouldn't risk his eye even more. It makes me think of how much of the smile she had in the actual scene was a mask.
It just makes me sad to think of what they could've been. Well, fanfic exists for a reason ig
Reading The Jasmine Throne rn (and loving it) and lowkey, Malini reminds me vaguely of Azula
Like they're both princesses of kingdoms who are colonizing other places, they're both very manipulative for the sake of survival and willing to use others, there's also Malini's ladies-in-waiting who are currently dead but remind me vaguely of Mai and Ty Lee.
The difference is again their upbringing. Azula had only her father to turn to despite the abuse and was created into a weapon while Malini was actively abused by her tyrant brother in a way she wasn't manipulated to worship him and came to despise him as she should. Hence, the expectations from them were also different and the way they plot and manipulate for their survival turned out different.
I think it'd be cool to mix around stories and ideas like that though like a fanfic where Azula upset Ozai and he sent her off and had her poisoned daily like Malini while she plotted her escape (with yuri) or maybe where she plotted to get him off the throne (I've read fics like these they're very fun) with Zuko as Aditya maybe (i havent finished the book yet so idk what happens gang). I'd love to see a jasmine throne au with Azutara lowkey with Katara as Priya and Azula as Malini
Yknow what'd be kinda cool characterization for Zuko? Not getting along with the Gaang initially as smoothly as it happened. Like they don't all becomes besties once they've accepted anf forgiven him. I genuinely think he'd struggle more because his friend group previously has consisted of fire nation people or just Mai, Ty Lee and Azula. Zuko would struggle to relate to the Gaang in many aspects because he's traumatised in a very different way to the Gaang and is also a source of some of THEIR trauma. I think it'd have been cool if we saw him genuinely missing Mai atleast or a bit of the companionship of the people he left at rhe Fire Nation. Plus it'd show his resilience and determination if you see him struggle more with actual connection beyond redemption and not enjoy the Gaang's company as much at first because he's used to something very different yet stay to see it through.
Any stories he tells or jokes he makes are not suited to this atmosphere he's in and would've rolled over better with his companions (whether this is Azula and friends or literally staff Zuko was friendly with) at the Fire Nation even if he has a dysfunctional relationship with them. I think it could be a good amount of nuance to everyone and show us another positive facet of the FN and could also be a good way to portray the propaganda they were fed if you did it right.
Guys...Lowkey kinda hate everything and everyone rn.
Except fanfiction
"You were scared of being seen, truly seen....but I saw you"
A headcanon about the kyoshi warriors because canon didn't give us enough.
Anyone found it kind of weird that the islands main defence is literal teenage girls? Ofc they're all very competent at it as shown, but they're kinda young no? It plays well into the child soldier thing in Atla and ik the age people were considered mature and adult at a time like that would be different but presumably the Kyoshi warriors have protected their island from other threats in the past considering how prepared they were relieving Aang, Katara and Sokka in ep 3. Considering Suki's age atleast, she could've been 13-14 or younger even then.
I honestly don't think Kyoshi would've been training a bunch of toddlers when she founded the Kyoshi warriors, especially because the Dai Li were all adults. Maybe she could've been allowing the training to take place for kids but I don't think they were supposed to become the main faction of protectors.
Hence, I present the hc that originally, the Kyoshi Island warriors WERE adult women but the guy who said they've stayed out of the war so fat wasn't wholly truthful. I hc that maybe they were attacked once but the adult Kyoshi warriors defended the island. However, in the process a lot of them died or were so severely injured they could never fight again. The girls we see now could've been many of their daughters who were left abandoned at a young age. So the guy we see in ep 3 tried to tell them all that the fire nation didn't invade them because of the strength of the kyoshi warriors and they were trained very early due to wanting to be prepared because none of the villagers were capable or able-bodied. I think most of them (Suki included) would've kinda known how their parents died aleast later on but don't bring it up to keep the peace they've established.
I think that could give a lot to Suki's character with having her mother die to protect Kyoshi Island and not really knowing her own mother. All she remembers are traces and she actually remembers her Kyoshi sisters more than her parents. That's why shes so fiercely protective od them. I think that could also be a good parallel to draw with Sokka for both his mother and father and how they were forced to become this defender ans warrior at such a young age.
wasn't gonna drink tonight but I remembered that chaghan wrote "but i can fix him. give him time. don't make me kill him. please." in his letters about altan

Speerlies are remembered for being mindless murder machines, suited only for servitude and destruction on the basis of their race. However, the two Speerlies we meet not only study at Sinegard but they are sought after for the two most intense tracks and known for their intelligence. Speerly forging techniques are still beyond the knowledge and talent of Nikara smiths.

I truly am so obsessed with Rinezha and the red string of fate. It's the Warrior's nephew and the Gatekeeper’s daughter. The prince of Dragon Province and the princess of Speer. Shamans of the Dragon of the East and the Phoenix of the south, two symbols used in marriage in China. The two best students in the best academy in the empire. The generals of the Seventh and Thirteenth division.
