I think it was not only fine but important for Kara to be de-supered for most of the movie.

1) She wasn’t superpowered on Argo. She was exactly the same as she was on any other red sun planet except sicker. Unlike Clark, she didn’t grow up super. This is what her body normally feels like to her. Being super on Earth is new and unnatural to her.

2) She’s in a state of mental anguish, disassociation, and grief and is self-medicating through that with her dog and alcohol and guess what? Alcohol doesn’t work on Earth or any other yellow sun system.

3) The point of the movie is that you have to choose to be good and kind, and that it’s hard, and that also being good and kind does not look the same for everyone. For Kara, making that choice also meant choosing to become sober in the face of her depression and alocholism, which is extremely difficult for any alcoholic. She needed something beyond Ruthye’s plea to force her into action, and that was putting her best friend and emotional support animal’s life in jeopardy. Nothing else was enough to motivate her.

4) Relapsing is extremely common and expected. The dual sun planet mimicked the way that you can start feeling better on your antidepressants and then get hit out of nowhere with another wave of it. It’s awful. But guess what? There’s still hope if you wait it out.

5) The fights in the movie progressed from seeking to self-harm (she enjoyed the physical novelty of being hurt on Ruthye’s planet when she fought the thief) to preventing hurt (to Ruthye’s childhood and psyche and the girls who would have been trafficked had she not ended the bandit ring), which is also a journey of acceptance of her new powers. She goes from resenting having them because they are inextricably related to the death of her family and people, to accepting that she has the power to do real good and prevent other people hurting the way she is.

It wasn’t anti-feminist or bad writing to have her “normal” for so much of the story. It was essential to her character growth.

Of course they don’t like Milly Alcock’s Supergirl. She’s a grown ass woman with zero love interests who spends the movie saving her dog, casually dismantling a sex trafficking ring while she’s at it, and preaching the importance of being good, not nice or smiley or cheerful but good. I for one adored the movie and I really hope I’ll get to see more of Alcock’s Supergirl she’s now my favorite iteration of her and I love her so dearly.

i love how frequently kara used her own body as a shield. she was spiraling through the air with ruthye and was twisting and turning so she was the one plowing through the concrete, she was letting a motorcycle crash and break against her back. it might not be the poise of habit (having more control/redirecting the objects smoothly/etc) but by god does kara have the heroic instincts.

Kara who saw her parents wither away. Kara who carries the grief of an entire planet. Kara who doesn't share that grief with her cousin, because she thinks he could never understand. Kara who holds Krypto like her heart, because he is the only piece of her Krypton that is still alive. Kara who will tarnish her soul so Ruthye doesn't have to. Kara who has every reason to scream, cry and break things, but chooses to stay and make Earth her home because she also has many reasons to find again the happiness she lost. Entered this app after like 5 years bro life's been lifeing too much. Anyway I watched Supergirl recently and take this from a lens of someone who hasn't read Woman of Tomorrow or engaged much with Supergirl as a character outside this movie.

I honestly fucking loved it. Maine this is biased because Kara Zor-El (from this movie) is my new top kin but dude she's so fuckkng relatable. I loved the dynamics and I love the nuance of her character and grief. I love how she's angry and imperfect but still good. I just love her bro.

Honestly misogynistic reviews aside because a man will always be a man at the end of the day and comic readers reviews aside bcs idk enough to comment on that, I didn't get why some people are calling it just "fine". Like sure it didn't re-invent the genre but girl that movie reached a deep part in my soul and I can't explain it. I think I finally put a pin on why it altered my brain chemistry so much comparatively.

Kara Zor-El is not quite a relatable character to the masses. Compare her to Superman (2025) and her experiences are not something a huge majority can relate to. Hell, even I can't relate to witnessing the slow genocide of everyone you ever know. But the thing I do relate to is a young girl who's grieving loved ones and angry and not dealing with it in a palatable way. I can relate to her being an outsider in a place she didn't want to leave home for but had to for her own good. I can relate to someone who's brash and sarcastic and not always nice but rrying to be good. I'm sure many people have experienced things like that but I wouldn't say it's quite as "relatable" as Superman was. It's a very specific thing and even the friend I watched it with was someone who wouldn't quite identify with Kara like I did because she's never experienced the loss of a loved one in the same way.

Anyway, that's just my thoughts lol. I'm basically the target audience for the movie I think. That shits about to become my new personality.
