ADAD1002 - Assessment 2 Organic/Synthetic. In class participation today was based upon ‘value’ and we prepared for our auction, each student started with 5 matches to bid.

I created a Aboriginal ceremonial ornament. The ornament is made out of found emu feathers and tyed to natural and synthetic string. This authentic ceremonial ornament can be used as a dance belt, arm bands, necklace and head dress.

The ornament was auctioned off in class with bids starting at 2 matches and reached a total of 18. I chose to barter with Selma Benkza for 2 and half matches and a cake of (‘Scenanic Sydney Soaps’ made by Klaryce Edwards).

Assessment Task 2

Title: Major project

My project of an A2 poster was in the form of a cushion cover representing Organic/Synthetic. Following this assessment I have chosen to research eco printing using organic and synthetic material for my major project.

I have collected Eucalyptus leaves from the Wiradjuri Country, Cowra NSW as my organic materials. I have used rusty wire, cutting small pieces and then forming them into spirals to use as my synthetic material. Soaking leaves in iron water made from water and rusty steel wool. I scattered the leaves and place spirals onto silk and linen material, rolling them with branches.

Using fibre string to secure the materials and cloth, I placed the materials into an electric copper, steaming for a few hours. I placed red river gum sap which I collected from the Wiradjuri country, into the hot water to form a beautiful red colour and will soak my materials over night. I can’t wait to see the results..

These materials will contribute to my final project.

Week 5 ‘Affect and body politics’ - Group Work

For my Assessment Task 1 I have chosen question 5 - Contemporary art and design often looks at the idea of constructed binaries, such as man/woman, soft/hard, straight/gay, dirty/clean, organic/synthetic. Considering the history of these ‘pairs’, how can art and design interrogate these binaries and offer new insights.

I will be focusing on organic/synthetic which I will further explore how art and design can interrogate these binaries and offer new insights. Organic in this case relates to living materials where as synthetic materials are made by chemical matter made by humans.

Through my research connecting art and design to organic and synthetic I found Synthetic Aesthetics which is a group of synthetic biologists and international artists and designers “exploring designing, understanding the living world.” Synthetic Biology which is a new approach to engineering biology that connects organic materials to the making of synthetic objects and forms them into one unit. For example, in one experiment, algae ingest elements of computer hardware to become a combination of synthetic and organic matter. This research gave me insight on the possibility of using organic materials and working with synthetic materials.

My project of an A2 poster is in the form of a cushion cover I hand painted using collected organic emu feathers as a tool and synthetic paints to make markings onto 100% natural cotton material. The material was then iron to set the permanent paint and then made into a cushion cover using synthetic machine, a zipper and cotton thread. Thus bringing the two binaries together as one. The artwork tells an ancient Aboriginal story of connecting to country and the journey of the emu which is my totem of the Gamilaraai people of NSW.

Through the process of creating my cushion cover, organic and synthetic materials come together to produce the final product. My poster interrogates this binary by showing the opposites working together creating new ways of expressing the oral history of Aboriginal song lines.

I have researched Organic/Synthectic and chose to create a poster on Living/Dying. From my research and collaborating with students researching the same question. These are some images I am putting together to create ideas for my poster.

Studio Exercise 1 Week One:

Construct a skyscraper out of inappropriate materials

Using materials we found in the scrap bin, we constructed a building/skyscraper then inserted the image into photoshop, stretched out to make it appear taller than reality.

#ADAD1001 2017 - Assessment Task 3: Curated experiments - ‘Vagueness’

For my assessment I have chosen to focus on the area of ‘vagueness’ which has lead me to the development of my artwork/designed object. Experimenting with the natural sunlight and creating a space within the Australian bush as my backdrop, I used objects such as dried curved vines, a hand dyed silk scalf, a glass bowl half filled with lemonade. Sitting the objects on a glass top coffee table in the direct sunlight, I wrapped the silk scarf around the bowl and inserted the dried curved vines. Using my iPhone 7 I experimented and documented my chosen objects, taking photos and experimenting with video recording. I went through a process of capturing still and moving bubbles, lights, shadows, reflections, and colours. By chance I was able to capture a scene of coloured light forming moving images of shapes, lines, curves and shooting lights which created a sense of vagueness. Recorded audio sounds of Beethoven, “Moonlight Piano Sonata” and “Closeup of Ocean Waves Against Rocks” were interlaced together to create even further layers of vagueness. Looking at the work colours and light transform into shapes of mountains with cascades of water flowing at a rapid speed. The work also has an element of generating and creating static electricity.
