KARRâs scanner continued to eye her cautiously, registering each movement right down to her joints. Her body, as clumsy as it appeared, would do little to threaten him. He had the upper hand when it came to physical strength, even if all he could do was sit there and tolerate a few uninvited tugs or prods.
In response to her questions, a burst of static and other scrambled noises rose from his cabin again. âI amâŠâ âŠFuck. Fuck. What was he? He was him, yes, but aside from thatâŠ
âŠHe couldnât admit to not knowing. Not knowing was a flaw. He would never accept being flawed.
âI am⊠Classified.â
Yes, that was a good coverup. She wouldnât know he was quite literally blanking on his own title. Hopefully. His pauses and repeats could be attributed to his systems still trying to diagnose and re-calibrate themselves.
Sara wasnât a brainiac when it came to computers (even less so when it came to socializing), but she knew both malfunction and guardedness when she saw them. Listening to thisâŠdude try to scramble for even his name was just pitiful, and despite his rudeness, she felt a tug on her heart strings. What was originally a curiously indignant stare softened, and she regarded the flickering light on the vehicleâs prow. Against her better judgement, she reached up and wiped the grime from his âeyeâ, her movements very slow and gentle. Last thing she wanted was for him to electrocute her, or split his chassis in half and bite her or something.
âWell, Classified,â Maybe she was still a little salty about being shoved over.  âIâm not a threat, and itâs nice to meet you. Not every day you meet a talking car.â She seemed at a loss for words, glancing away and chewing nervously on one of her fingernails. He probably wouldnât care if she offered her own name, and heâd probably answer all other questions about himself with the same government scripted classified shtick.
Finally, she seemed to come across a line of questioning that just might get her somewhere.
âDo you, umâŠwant to get out of here? I donât know if youâve noticed, but youâre in the equivalent of a car graveyard.â Carefully once again, she scooted slightly to the side, gesturing expansively behind her. She didnât move completely from his line of sight, though. He hadnât told her to scram, soâŠmaybe he wanted her around? She found herself hoping so.
@decepti-karrâ
Whatever smug feeling he might have had after coming up with such a brilliant answer was quickly smothered when he watched her arm extend toward him. Part of him wanted to flinch, to shy away. But, in this sorry state, he could not move. So much for automated.
What he was not expecting was the gentle hand on his scanner. The removal of the grime did little to improve his sensors, but somehow he found himself... Appreciating the gesture. There was no benefit to her for such an act.
For a moment, KARR found himself conflicted. Were all humans this way? Instinctively, he told himself no. But... Why? Why did he possess such a negative disposition towards them when he could recall nothing more about them?
Reasoning with it was currently out of the question, as was to be expected. He was in no condition for an in-depth analysis of the girl or her actions. All he knew was there was a human female in front of him, signalling no harm to him.
The question she prompted piqued his interest. Graveyard... Putting what he could find in his data banks together, KARR soon realized the meaning of the word. âIf what you say is correct, then I do not belong here. I am far from deceased.â The light dancing on his nose quickened its pace, almost as if anticipating something.
âHelp me escape this âcar graveyard.ââ
slumberingspectersâ:
âHey!â Sara cried as the door pushed. Her clumsiness caused her to topple onto her ass, watching the door slam shut with indignant offense. She should be the one offended, he just shoved her over!
Then again, she did tug his handle without permission, really⊠Okay, maybe she deserved that. Maybe. The young woman didnât catch she was now referring to the car as he, as if he was a living, breathing person with personal space, and she hadnât just been hoping this was a prank. Cautiously, she shifted onto her knees, crawling around to the front to peer at the scanner. ââŠWho are you? Whatâs your name?â If he could have opinions and boundaries, he was just as much a person as she was. All new interactions started with introducing oneself.

âI was just looking!â She squeaked, standing straight up and holding her hands where whoever it was could see them. Of course, this was a bait car. The security around this place was crap, maybe vehicles were stolen often.
âI was just curious, honest, officer! I didnâtâŠâ
Upon looking around, she saw no police cars, no sirens, blue lights, anything. She was completely alone. Brows furrowed, Sara slowly turned to look around, still standing next to the car. After a moment, she huffed out a chuckle that sounded weaker than she intended.
âOkay, you can come out. If this is a prank video for YouTube or something, you got me.â
God, she hoped it was a prank. Turning, she peered in the car again, turning her cellphone to use the light and check the door handle. âWhereâs the hidden camera or sensor or what?â
@decepti-karr
KARR measured her reaction, and through his mangled mass of data, he tried to compare it to what he knew. Revealing her hands in such a manner meant she had no weapon, or at least she was not going to use one. Good. He appreciated the visible lack of threat.
âWhat is YouTube?â
His voice sounded significantly calmer now, though the static underneath persisted. That was going to get rather annoying- no, it already was annoying. What was a minor malfunction on the surface was a sign of decay, of imperfection to KARR. A quick diagnostic check revealed it to be a hardware issue, nothing the AI could fix on his own.
When he felt her tug on the handle, he allowed it to unlock. However, instead of offering her access to his interior, he swung his door wide open to push her away before slamming it shut. âThe locations of my sensors are classified.â
@slumberingspectersâ
âBestie, your car keeps answering my calls. I swear, every time I try to get ahold of you, all I hear is distant snoring, lofi music, and then âyouâve called at an inopportune time, please try again later, vroom vroom Iâm a car.â Like, what is even happeningâŠ?â
âI do not say âvroom vroom Iâm a car.ââ

Mike only nodded in response to what KARR had told him, before he looked to KITT, whoâs lights continued to flicker. âHe doesnât have that virus thing again, does he?â
âNo, thatâs not possible.â Sarah shook her head, continuing to run over KITTâs diagnostic results, but nothing appeared to be wrong enough to be causing KITT to have so many issues. âIâm not finding anything.â
Then someone else walked in, an older man, who took the tablet from Sarah- his daughter. âIâll look it over and see if I can find something.â He announced, looking through the results. âHis engine may be having some misfiring, and it looks like heâs having a few errors within his chip alone. KITT, reboot.â
âCommencing system reboot..â KITT stated, before he ended up shutting down briefly, then powering back up. âSystem reboot complete.âÂ
The flickering of his lights were gone, but his engine was certainly awful to listen to.
Perhaps, maybe, KITT was a little inferior.Â
Attention flicking from the people to the car beside him, KARR found himself wondering once again. In his past, did he ever have anything like this? A team of humans to maintain him? Surely, if he was a beloved creation such as KITT, heâd had someone to look over him.Â
...Was it Wilton? Was that was his emotions were over?
As per the routine, the Trans Am was dragged from his thoughts when KITT restarted himself. Could a simple reboot repair his malfunctioning software? He was half-tempted to try, although the horrible sound of KITTâs engine distracted him.Â
âYou are in need of repairs,â came his obvious statement. âPerhaps Lily may assist you. She has proven herself to be a capable mechanic.â

âYes, I am aware.â KITTâs.. overly simple reply was odd, and he didnât seem too concerned about his own state, which.. really, was quite bad. When he had finally cut his engine, even the lights on his vehicle flickered.Â
âHe sounds awful, is he sick?â Mike walked in, thinking he was funny, but it really was no laughing matter. Then he noticed KARR. âWho is this? Looks super cool.â
âThatâs KARR,â Sarah informed Mike, as she got up from her seat to run some tests on KITT. âHeâs the original. Lily repaired him.â
âMake sure KITTâs okay.â Torres simply told Sarah, before he left the room to make some calls. As usual.Â
KARR hurriedly scanned the two other humans. If they were in association with the ones he was familiar with, he had no reason to distrust them either. âComputers do not get sick,â he bluntly informed Mike. âHe is, however, malfunctioning.â
One word stuck to his processors longer than usual. Original? Original... What? His voice caught a smug tone, as he believed he answered his own question. âI am the prototype of the car of the future.â That felt good to say. Very good.
He watched Torres leave before refocusing on the other people near him. âI am also still in need of repairs. My memory banks and logs are corrupted, and I cannot unscramble them. I require manual assistance, though my situation is low priority.â His scanner paused, the light closest to KITT remaining on for longer than normal before the typical motion returned. Something in his code asked him why he would prioritize the repair of another vehicle to his own. KARR swatted the nagging thought away, unwilling to even humor it.

decepti-karrâ:
Torres said nothing else, going back to KITT before getting in the driverâs seat. They soon drove off, as KITTâs engine continued to sound worse and worse the farther he drove.
Not that it mattered, theyâd get to the SSC rather soon, someone there would be able to fix it. Once theyâd hit the highway and KITT drove on much faster, his engine became very loud.
It wasnât long until they arrived, and KITT drove through the tunnel first, soon reaching his normal place where he always would park.
Torres then had gotten out, and directed KARR to where he could park inside at, the spot being almost right beside KITT.
Loose pebbles crunched underneath KARRâs tires as he cruised after the duo. As they made their way down the road, he found himself fixating on KITT, primarily the sound that was coming from under his hood. A peculiar thought popped into KARRâs metaphorical head.
It was... Annoying. Annoying and almost painful to listen to.
It only got worse once they began to accelerate. As if to drown out the noise, the whirring sound of the Trans Amâs scanner gradually began to increase in volume. Luckily, he only had to endure it for so long before they reached the SSC. The building was unpresuming, at least to KARR, looking like nothing more than an aircraft hangar. Except for the tunnel.
KARR felt mildly uneasy, but he followed KITT through the narrow passage. Before long, he was situated parallel to the Mustang. As he took in the sights of the SSC, KARR directed his voice to KITT. âYour engine is beginning to malfunction. Efficiency has decreased by 40%.â

decepti-karrâ:
Shortly after Lily had been left at the hospital, KITT and Torres returned to her repair shop, a bit surprised that KARR was still there.
Torres exited the vehicle, walking too KARR, although he surprisingly gave him some space. âKARR, it would be appreciated if you followed us to the SSC.â
He seemed to be giving KARR a choice, although he mainly wanted KARR there so that he wasnât running loose all over the roads. It wasnât known what heâd do if KARR refused, though. KITT.. oddly, didnât seem like heâd be able to do much if KARR refused, as his engine had started to sound a bit odd just since theyâd gotten back.
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Lily was unconscious once again, and the doctor and some nurses were not able to wake her. She was then transferred into another part of that hospital where she would be monitored constantly.
Despite having the peace and quiet to think efficiently, KARR was unable to determine much of anything. He cursed his failing drives, running the same diagnostics over and over, hoping for something--Â anything. But there was nothing.
The sound of an oncoming vehicle caused KARR to become alert to his surroundings once again. He watched carefully as the human from before appeared. The amber glow danced across the nose of the car, surveying Torres as he approached. He had helped Lily, and Lily had helped KARR. Surely, that meant this man could be trusted.
âVery well,â came the synthetic voice after a moment. His engine cranking back up, he made a single wheel-turn forward, indicating his willingness to follow.
knightrider-rpâ:
decepti-karrâ:
âCars can talk?â Lily questioned, looking from KARR then to Torres, who helped her get up. âThat is so weird-â
The injury was worse than any of them had thought. âIâll explain to you once we get you to the hospital and checked out.â Torres told her, bringing her over to KITT, although rather slowly.
The ambulance would take awhile to get there, so KITT was the best option at the moment. Since KITT would be leaving, though, KARR would have plenty of room to escape the repair shop and leave to wherever.
Once Lily was in KITTâs passenger seat, Torres got in the driverâs side, before they headed to the hospital- leaving KARR all alone.
KARR merely watched as KITT quickly left his line of sight, the gentle hum of his scanner now the only sound in the repair shop. It was true, he was given ample opportunity to leave, to go about his merry way, to go on his journey of self rediscovery on his own...
But he didnât.
Instead, he remained exactly where he was, shifting to park and shutting off his engine. There was still plenty for him to think about here. Like why Wilton was so important to him...
The idea of following KITT and the humans briefly crossed his artificial mind. Perhaps in the morning, he thought. For now, he had a lot to process.
