Caravaggio living paintings by Ludovica Rambelli Theater
This never ceases to amaze me, no matter how many times I’ve seen it.
a bunch of ink art I made at the end of october / start of november.
Regular doctors don’t necessarily know much about nutrition/diet either. I started seeing a dietician this year and she was straight up horrified by some of the advice given to me by my doctor.
[Video description:
A tiktok-video of Sarah Williams @/nutritionalsarah - who stands in front of a mirror a phone in her hand.
CC: My thoughts on nutrition trends as a dietetic student/intern.
Starting off big: Keto was created for epileptic children. Carbs are not bad for you; they’re actually the preferred fuel source for the body.
Drinking lemon water in the morning will not boost your metabolism. Taking Apple Cider Vinegar shots in the morning is gross and does nothing for you.
The terminology of „clean eating“ is silly. The only time you should be clean eating is when there is dirt on your food.
1,200 calories is the amount a toddler needs and/or a 98 year old bed-ridden patient. If you have working liver and kidneys, you don’t need to do a detox. All those cleanses do is make you poop yourself.
Consistently eating under your Basal Metabolic Rate will lower your metabolism. Juice cleanses are just…no. Dietary fat does not make you fat. It’s an excess of calories that contribute to adipose tissue.
Sweet potatoes are not healthier that white potatoes. They just both have different micronutrient profiles. Skinny does not automatically equal healthy. Eating after 8pm will not make you fat.
Drink your water, get your sleep, eat your fruits and veggies and forget about the rest.
/end Video Description.]
She’s right and should say it. Speaking from an entirely different part of this grand conspiracy, a lot of this shit is made up and pushed to sell expensive niche cookbooks to your parents. The amount of books about keto and and “clean eating” i sell to boomers and older Gen X is absurd.
“But why do you care so much about flat faced dogs when there are lots of other problems in domestic animals?”
Listen. Ten years ago when I started practicing as a vet it was uncommon to see a pug. It was quite rare to see a boston terrier or a french bulldog.
There has been years of veterinarians campaigning against the breeding of extreme brachycephalic or ‘flat faced’ dogs and where has that gotten us?
About a third the new puppies coming through the clinic are brachycephalic. This is especially obvious with the influx of covid puppies, but this style of dog and the inherent suffering of brachycephalic airway syndrome has just become more popular.
We harp on about it because it is still a growing problem.
And it’s obscene. These dogs sell for multiple thousands of dollars, up to $12,000 for a ‘rare’ color, and people are willing to pay that. Some even take out loans to buy these dogs that breeders say ‘are healthy’.
It’s ludicrous. These dogs have shortened lifespans, struggle to breathe (sometimes surgery improves it but not always), skin problems, dental problems, heart problems, airway problems, digestive problems, knee problems and often hip problems. There is barely an inch of these dogs that are normal. That is so much preventable suffering.
For some reason people get addicted to these dogs, once they’ve had one, they usually get two or three, usually before they get old enough to really be obvious with their problems.
And breeders do not care, it’s too profitable to care. A lot of these pups are coming from places that have 4 or more breeding females, or are being transported in from obscure country locations. They are insanely profitable and small enough to breed in suburbia.
There’s too much money, too much public demand, and too much suffering. Honestly I’m reaching the point where I would say that breeding these dogs without a minimum length of nose should be illegal.
Because information campaigns havent worked, but we keep harping on about it.
I care because no *puppy* should ever have a trachea that looks like this:
That’s about 1/3 the size it should be. This puppy was slowly suffocating to death every single moment of his existence. NOTHING should ever be like just because we decided the outside of the dog is ‘cute’. This is animal abuse, to breed dogs that are prone to this on purpose.
If you think brachy breeds aren’t a problem, I actively dare you to spend an entire day breathing through a typical sized drinking straw and see how you feel.
Ah yeah we had one of those a few weeks ago.
He was a fancy colour (which owners paid £££ for but then didn’t insure the puppy) and from what sounded like your run of the mill hobby breeder. Had to tell owners it would be a miracle if he reached 6 months old but he would probably need euthanasia long before that.
Also “why do you care about one problematic thing when there are others?” is such a stupid take. Believe it or not but we are capable of being concerned about multiple problems in domestic animals.
There just isn't enough genetic variance among “pure-bred” pugs/frenchies to avoid the sort of genetic health problems like trachea collapse and joint problems.
It’s true and you should say it.
I wish they would remove this breed entirely tbh. Let the remaining dogs age out or dilute the breed by cross breeding them to healthier dogs.
People really need to stop thinking of harmful deformities in animals as cute, even “”healthy”” pugs have myriad of health problems. Even when I was too young to know they were unhealthy, I hated how they looked. Honestly as a kid I thought they took the puppies and smashed their face in to get that look. Not sure if the truth is more or less disturbing.
Seriously, how and more importantly WHY did we as a species take THIS
And breed it into this travesty
And even if you don’t wanna go back that far to a wolf (or more accurately, a common ancestor to our modern wolf and the domestic dog), look at the plenty other dog breeds out there that are very different from wolves but still healthy and sound animals (as long as bred responsibly).
Dogs need to have a muzzle!! They need to have eyes that aren’t bulging out of their skull!! They need to have a canine skull in general!!
This is why I hate almost every teacup dog breed, there’s just so few small dogs that are well put together.
why would anyone want an unhealthy pug when they've been working on a healthier version known as a retromop/retropug anyways.
Retro pugs are definitely a better alternative. Don’t know if it solves every health problem, but it’s nice to see a dog without bug eyes and with some literal breathing room.
The side by side is insane. I personally think the muzzle on the above retro is still kinda short. but it’s absolutely miles above the purebred pug on the right.
Now let’s fix the rest as well.
And cats too! The original persian breed never died out of the gene pool, they’re just less valuable to cat shows if they, you know, have a face. Why? I have no idea, the bottom look is hideous and makes life hell for that animal.
Stop making horror movies out of live animals.

How to tell a raven from a crow. Made with corvid researcher Dr. Kaeli Swift for her blog post on the subject!
These are all well and good (accurate and informative and also fun) but here’s the best way to tell the difference between the two:
Ravens are FUCKING huge.
