the egg is a state of unknowing. you do not know you are transfeminine. you might be drawn to femininity, you might know this consciously and seek it out or even publicly express femininity, but if you either do not know your own transfemininity or are in deep denial about it, you're in the egg.
knowledge cracks the egg. if you're outright searching for reasons to transition or justifications for your own transgenderness the egg is cracked. if you've admitted to yourself your own transfemininity the egg is cracked. this is usually still a volatile experience, there might be some questioning or retreating back into the shell, some moments feel stronger than others, but you can't uncrack the egg.

i once took an american antihistamine pill just a basic one for seasonal allergies and i had to immediately lay down and while doing so i vividly hallucinated that i was a steerage passenger on the titanic resigned to my death as my cabin filled up rapidly with water. then i blacked out and when i woke up again my allergies were gone for the entire season.

I have finished outer wilds + itâs DLC and yes, itâs a beautiful experience, but itâs also deeply saddening, especially in relation to the travelers.
(DISCLAIMER: OUTER WILDS SPOILERS. DO NOT PROCEED IF YOU HAVENT FINISHED THE GAME. GO PLAY OUTER WILDS)
When I finished outer wilds, I expected to be moved of course, but what I was surprised by was I felt deeply, deeply sad. Better yet, it almost felt like I was /grieving/. Not just for the experience I will never have again, but I was specifically grieving for these characters and the deaths they were given.
These travelers all died away from home. They died on the farthest reaches of the galaxy, not surrounded by friends or family. They never got to say goodbye to their home, because why would they have? They didnât know the sun would die out, or that this was long planned since even before their time.
Riebeck died in space, when they were deathly afraid of even being up there. They most likely fell through, into the black hole, as the sun collapsed in itself. They never got to truly discover the full vastness of the Nomai, never got to see one in person, never got to truly understand their motivations and history. They died in the place they were scared of the most, and didnât even want to go- but went anyways, knowing the only way theyâd get their information would be in the stars above. They died brave.
Esker, the closest to their home, died alone. Theyâre, for many, the first stop in the Hatchlings journey, but after poking around the moon there isnât any reason to come back- leaving them alone while the sun dies, watching their home get destroyed before their eyes and eventually destroying themself. Their influence in the space program, despite being forgotten by their home (signature present- not in the frame), made it so we could continue on this journey, but theyâre left without any ships to repair and no travelers to whisk away on their journey. They died lonely.
Gabbro was aware of the loop, of course, but was completely unable to do anything. Stranded on a harsh planet with no ship, they chose to relax and let time pass by- when we meet them, weâre the absolute opposite. We have to move and keep moving, keep understanding and learning and finding a way out of this loop, and so eventually we pass by when weâre done. They subsequently are the reason weâre even in this loop- the statue they collected linked to us, causing us to be put into the Ash Twin Project. Despite this, Gabbro died, either surprised that they could or satisfied knowing that we did it. Maybe they were happy to finally be dead. Maybe they were shocked it took so long. Either way, they died far, far away from home, on a wind-sea planet nobody wants to touch, with no way out. They died stranded.
Feldspar died doing what they loved- exploring territories nobodies ventured before- but died without being able to share it. They died as an adventurer, but quite possibly the farthest away from Timber Hearth. Despite being a staple in the space program, both for discovery and for exploration, they became stagnant in the depths of Dark Bramble, the only thing they could broadcast being their harmonica- the only remnant of their home, aside from their emergency trees. Nobody could search for them- to the eyes of their family, friends, and colleagues, they were long assumed dead by our Hatchlingâs lift off. Feldsparâs influence is what allows us to find a crucial piece to the giant puzzle of Outer Wilds- the coordinates to the eye of the universe, quite possibly one of the most important details to the end of the game- however, unlike Feldspar, we are free to explore and keep exploring. We arenât stagnant, we arenât stuck in a never ending âplanetâ, and it just reminds us just how sad their journey is. They lived heroically, tragically âdiedâ while in space, and their family and friends will never know they were actually alive, just stuck in a forever shifting seed. They died isolated.
Chert, much like Feldspar, died doing what they loved, and helped us in a numerous amount of ways to discover what truly was going on with our universe. However, the research of their solar system is subsequently what led to their death. They mightâve even been aware our sun would explode- they were the closest to it, the first to die, and the only one to witness it collapse in itself and crumble beneath its weight. Chert died exploring a planet so tied to the history of the Nomai, minutely aware that the abnormal activity in their sun could only mean something horrific, and yet could never understand the full scope of it. They died, both aware and unaware of the situation at hand. They died first.
Solanum died on the Quantum moon- she died on a holy pilgrimage, a testament to her speciesâ growth and knowledge in a new, harsh solar system so far from their original galaxy. She, ironically almost, died far far away from the home she made for herself on Brittle Hollow- she lived even longer than her own species, didnât perish alongside them. The ghost matter never reached her on the Quantum Moon, at least while she was at the Sixth location. While her body in most forms died, she was still looking at the Eye, unable to reach it and unable to truly comprehend its vastness. She died- fully- exploring what her species vowed to find, and died satisfied (or at least we can only hope).
The Prisoner is what gets me the most, and made me DEVASTATED when I say myself down and thought about it. The Prisoner doesnât have a quick death like the many other travelers- the prisoner rotted away in a vault, forever asleep, never to return to the false home they created. They were forced to dwell in the sins of their actions for eternity, forever stuck in a limbo- they couldnât ever wake up again, because what would they wake up to? Even in the beginning, the vault worked both ways- in the real world, and in the dream world. At least in the real world, theyâd eventually die in the vault (a slow, painful death due to thirst or starvation), but now theyâre forever stuck in a dream, with no inclination as to how long has passed and what has become of their people. Theyâre far from their original moon, and canât even return if they wanted to, reduced to a barren wasteland because of the Stranger. When we show them what happened, projecting that no, their species didnât survive, but instead rotted away in a dream- they cry. And not just cry, they /howl/, interrupting our projection as it becomes too much to handle. Their species is dead. Their friends- if they still had any- and their family are gone. However, their âsinâ- revealing the eyes signal even just for a moment- allowed for two entire new races of people to discover it and harness it for good. By walking into the water, they accept that they too will be dead once they wake, but die knowing they did good by the universe and its slowly dwindling future. They died grieving, but died enlightened aswell.
And we see all of this at the end of the game, the final campfire. Everyoneâs stories coming together to shape the mosaic that was the Hatchling. Itâs implied that the people we meet might not actually be there, at least from my perspective- Solanum refers to us as the only conscious observer present in the Eye. Weâre the only ones awake- or even /alive/- to see it and harness it. Weâre simply addressing the people that have shaped us, the stories we have learned and how they intersected with our own. We are left knowing that they died scientists, heroes, adventurers- but most importantly, they died travelers.
