Airón!
Finished my illustration of the Airón during the wedding fight :)
Lots of finnicky little things that I wish were better but alas, as I have said before, I am trained to illustrate as a designer, not as an illustrator (if that makes any sense…) so my skills in certain areas are limited.
I had a really fun time thinking about the clothes and all the research that went into it. Looked at *lots* of Han dynasty paintings as well as some Tang and Ming dynasty clothes. Ultimately this piece is a complete Frankenstein of various dynasties and also costumes from c-dramas lol

Relistening to these books (have not read Dragon Blood Curse yet) and decided I needed to draw Airón during the fight scene at the wedding. This meant I needed to design the wedding clothes super quick though so you can see my little sketch in the corner to act as a guide for the big drawing. Have to fix some perspective things and so on so forth.
Unsure how I feel about the wolf’s claw design yet… was thinking about hunting tools and survivalist blades but i can’t tell if it feels too modern…

My gremlin son!!! And the varying states he’s in.
I’ve drawn and redrawn him so many times it’s a little mortifying. Been trying to really nail down my vision of Neil and the exact mash-up of all my favorite depictions of him by all the wonderful artists.
Credit where credit is due, I am obsessed with evyltalks portrayal of him so you can definitely see that inspiration especially in the long-haired versions.

Digital illustration done on procreate, 100% human made
They won’t leave my brain 🥲
I’m a designer, so my usual style of art is different than this. Trying to give myself more experience with illustration; not perfect but overall pleased with how it turned out
Illustration done on Procreate; no AI used in any part
Considering his past, it would make sense to me if Molly was also a frequent sleepwalker. I've lived with sleepwalkers in the past and I can imagine it going several ways.
Molly often wakes up in the middle of the night, and wanders around, not saying much, if anything (maybe 'empty'). And as his room mate, Fjord eventually figures out how to handle the situation.
He keeps the door locked when they sleep, with a bell around it to make noise if it opens. Not only because Molly might 'escape' and get lost or hurt, but because Molly canonically sleeps naked, and having someone at the inn running into a red-eyed, naked, adult tiefling they don't know, in the dead of night, could be traumatic for everyone involved, -including Molly when people start screaming and he doesn't understand what's happening.
So, when Molly does sleep walk, Fjord might wake up to him trying to open the locked door, but can't.
At this point, Fjord knows to ask Molly a question. Doesn't matter what it is. If Molly can't answer him, or seems confused and stammers.. he's asleep, and Fjord might tell him to go back to bed. Which, funny enough, he does.
If Molly starts to panic, it's a distraction game. They play a music box and Caleb makes his dancing lights float around for a while. And eventually, Molly is able to wake enough that he's not panicking anymore. Might ask what they're all doing up, and everyone can go back to bed.
In the morning, he remembers none of this.
Stupid fucking Neil and his stupid fucking bandanas
he's free now
You guys can’t just release him into the wild. He’s an invasive species. He’s gonna change every. single. game.

"My 6yo son has been talking about needing to do his hair nice and be cute for school so he can 'attract females.' I was terrified he got exposed to some alpha male shit. You know what it was?
Fucking Animal Planet. He is learning to flirt from BIRD documentaries."

it’s always, “andrew wasn’t fast enough to save neil a second time”, and never, “andrew, with a broken collarbone and limp hand, dragged himself to neil and choked his attacker before she could reach him again.”
the definition of “if I couldn’t walk, I’d crawl to you.”
neil was tortured for two weeks and the first thing asked, the first thing he wanted to know, was which day andrew was coming back from easthaven.
and when wymack asked him “what does andrew have to do with this?” he answered “everything that matters.”
everything. that. matters.
he did not care that he was tortured in the nest for two weeks, he did not care about anything that wasn’t andrew and he downright said it.
he’s everything that matters.
i think the main reason we don’t talk much about the extent to which riko is so awful is because the book’s are from Neil’s pov and the whole trilogy Neil is just like “so this happened, and andrew looks hot, oh and kevin is having a panic attack about smth but anyway that’s not important, let’s move on-“
andrew minyard really did just flirt with neil josten by threats of murder-suicide and wordplay and cryptic percentages of hatred, and it worked. the fact that it took less than a year for him to bag neil and have him locked down is hysterical to me, especially when you remember what neil thought about him at the start. literally on his knees after andrew folded him with an exy racquet he stole (borrowed) like "andrew minyard didn't look like much in person" which is truly so fucking funny for neil to think upon laying eyes on him for the first time. it's like, yeah okay give it a few months and he'll be all you want to look at. tfc neil @ tkm neil: "you're doing what, with who? STAND UP!!!"
neil josten has the most beat up pair of converse that straight up look like an artefact from a world war. talking duct taped soles, frayed laces, holes on the side. he’s had them for seven months.
andrew minyard has the most in perfect condition pair of docs. completely un-creased, shiny leather. he’s had them for five years.
Everyone talks about Andrew telling Bee "Everyone knows now, Bee"—and with good reason, that shit is devastating. But I feel like not enough people are talking about "Who fears the monster that knows the taste of the whip?"
Like, that is so telling of Andrew's character. Andrew, who was abandoned at birth by the one person supposed to love him unconditionally, who was taught from the age of seven that love is inherently transactional, who is literally canonically referred to as a monster by the people closest to him. Who feels like the only true value he holds for the people he loves most is his theoretical ability to act as some sort of violent guard dog capable of protecting them from not only their abusers but also the literal mafia/yakuza.
So yeah, of course Andrew is terrified for them to realize that he is quite literally just some guy with his own fucked up past and not the impervious monster they project onto him. Because if he can't be what they think he is, what they keep telling him he is and asking him to be, what use is he to them at all? And if he can't be useful, what's to keep them from leaving?
Nora, when I catch you indeed.
Sometimes Riko let Kevin stay with him afterward.
