the meanings and references in names in the raidou series! spoilers ahead

raidou kuzunoha - well this is pretty obvious. raidou means thunder path or “way of the thunder/lightning” (possibly a reference to izanagi) kuzunoha is the name of the kitsune who gave birth to onmyoji legend abe no seimei. his birth name, jouhei, (錠平) means solid, fertile and fair and most of the connotations have something to do with nature. note that jouhei is an absurdly rare name even for the time period dsrk takes place in

tae asakura - tae’s penname, kichou, is a reference to feminist writer hiratsuka raichou. as a funny coincidence, hiratsuka raichou attended the narumi’s women’s english school. (FOLLOWING MAY BE A STRETCH BUT ATLUS LOVES THEIR REFERENCES) tae’s surname, asakura (朝倉) means morning. this may be a reference to the first quote of hiratsuka raicho’s magazine, seito or “bluestocking” which was “in the beginning, woman was the sun”

shouhei narumi: as we all know, narumi is not his real name and we probably won’t know his real name. he chose it and it’s pretty obvious by the kanji. shou (昌) means to soar or fly, while hei (平) means smooth and calm. fly smoothly.. yeah sounds like him

gouto-douji - less of a name more of a title. we don’t know what gouto’s name was before he became raidou kuzunoha the first, he’s forgotten it (old kitty) gouto-douji (業斗童子) can be roughly translated as “he who fights to repent his sins” So basically he serves the kuzunoha to repent.. I really want to know what he did in the first place to deserve that

yatagarasu - there is a lot of sun, sky and general weather connotations with several of the characters in the game and i don’t believe this is a coincidence for a world controlled by an organisation related to a bird. The three legged crow yatagarasu is accepted to be an incarnation of Kamotaketsunumi no Mikoto, the incarnation of the sun. (thats also why he’s apart of the sun arcana in persona games!) yatagarasu is a god who guides others which is fitting for their general role in dsrk

thats it! i may do more for other atlus games or continue with raidou if people are interested. ^^
