Sephiroth had never seen this sort of photo wallet. It was a lot to take in as she practically shoved the pictures in his face. He looked carefully at it with some heartache.
"They all look happy." He tried to keep his tone lighthearted. He didn't want to rain on her parade when she looked so proud and excited, but it did sting to know even robots had a mother.
"I'm sure they like it better not being tools."
"Unfortunately. They're not here right now. So my life's work means nill here." And just like that, she chucked the wallet behind herself.
"It's awfully dull here without them...I mean! They're just like normal children, they're bratty, selfish, and have mechanical parts!" Ok, maybe not that last part.
🎮👾 "I don't think that's for karaoke, lady..." Was she actual that uninformed about what was going on or was she acting? "But we're not being attacked right now, so I guess it's fine... probably." There wasn't anyone around to give her trouble at least.
"You could probably bring up lyrics on your phone or something, couldn't you?"
"I suppose I could...Or perhaps...We hijack the screens for the ultimate setup...Heheheh..." There she goes... "Surely, it's not that hard, right? I just have to connect to the whatever network they're o---."
"Oh! Cute buster arm."
"Ohhh, this is so...Camp!" Not what that means... "Oh, this'll take me back to my college days and doing karaoke at the dives..." Wait, that was a good point...
"...Can someone throw the words on a screen? Oh I'm so hopeless without it!"
"I don't think my mom made robots at all..." Which was another point that he picked the wrong person to ask about his mom. Sephiroth slouched his back and shoulders.
"What kind of robots do you make?" Hopefully, not war machines. Sephiroth didn't want to deal with another Scarlet.
Hook line and sinker...Any excuse to talk about her robotic marvels! Like a switch, she was practically rushing the boy to show him the accordion style photo reel that was in her wallet.
"Aren't they all cuties?" She cooed over the small prints of her boys, that despite their robotic weaponed nature, they looked borderline human all at the same time. "Ohh, I know it's frowned upon and they're supposed to be tools for the betterment of human kind...But they truly are my kids!" And they were bratty to boot: too.
Aubrey isn't exactly sure how to begin to respond to that. It's a heavy subject, particularly for strangers, so she couldn't help her stares.
In fact, that's probably what prompted him to be the one to move the conversation along: because Aubrey was caught in a stunned silence.
"Oh! Im Dr.Pennington..." but, she started muttering to herself: the validity of her schooling...Was her licensing even active in the city? "Ah, hell! Just call me Aubrey!" His name was certainly unique..and not foreboding at all!
Aubrey was a nice name and it put Sephiroth at ease that he didn't have to call her by her title. He was tired of that sort of thing when he was back in the labs. If anything, he just realized she didn't recognize his name and he felt relieved at the thought. Maybe she didn't recognize his mother because she had no connections to Shinra.
"Okay, Miss Aubrey." He bowed his head slightly. "I apologize again for suddenly dragging you into that. It's just been a while since I last saw anyone in a lab coat. I was a little desperate."
"It's fine. Contrary to popular belief: not all robotocists know each other." Despite the lab coat, her line of work was probably not what he was expecting nor was used to.
"Actually, now that you mention it: I should probably take this blasted thing off...I mean Im not building anything, so!!"
"I'm afraid I've never met a Jenova..." Aubrey hated to disappoint, and she could see it in his face...And the fact he beared a resemblence to her precious Sealman, it tugged at her heart string just right!
"The city of Spirale is so expansive, I'm sure Jenova will turn up. If Allegro were here: he'd be of great use to you!" Just who was that, "Allegro is my son, by the way, totally trustworthy!!"
Another dead end. It seemed the only person who knew his mom was that cloud guy and he was long gone. Sephiroth let out a soft, miserable sigh. Maybe he should stop holding out for hope of ever seeing her.
"It's alright. Chances are, she probably died after I was born." It was the only logical conclusion why everything around her was so hushed and buried.
"Sorry, I just suddenly started bombarding you with something heavy. My name is Sephiroth."

"Oh right!! Gay rights!!" Feast your eyes upon THIS activism!
"That can't possibly be safe to consume. Or legal."
"Well then...It can be our little secret. Right?"
“all i want is a little fun. is that so much to ask?”
"You can still have fun while being safe!!!" All said while she was taping pillows all over Kay. This was ridiculous.
𝐁𝐀𝐋𝐃𝐔𝐑'𝐒 𝐆𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝟑 𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 ASTARION EDITION ⟶ part one
“there is a time and place for violence. i mean - this place is perfect. but is it the time?”
“heaven forbid. we’re all entitled to our secrets.”
“sitting by the fire while you do all the hard work sounds marvelous, actually.”
“couldn’t you wait ten minutes before being an absolute freak?”
“you’re welcome to try and kill me, of course. but i don’t die easily these days.”
“ugh, don’t be so nice to me. it makes me want to be nice back.”
“a horrible death is always just around the corner with you.”
“stabbing someone a dozen times can be many things. but ‘the right thing to do’? hm, i doubt it.”
“immortality is only as good as the life you’re living. an eternity of luxury sounds a lot better than an eternity of struggle.”
“what are you doing? this isn’t safe. you can’t trust him.”
“look, i’m a not a details person, all right. but turning up and causing chaos has worked for us so far.”
“they were clearly artists. you can tell because it’s a mess in here.”
“you know, there is a point where bravery becomes stupidity. and walking into that thing would be very, very stupid.”
“i’ve had enough of bad poets singing of my looks - urgh.”
“is the plant bothering you?”
“until then, try not to die.”
“oh yes, i’m fine. i just feel… awful.”
“shut that oversized chicken up.”
“you know, the only way to cure temptation… is to give in to it.”
“next time, just warn me before you do something stupid.”
“there certainly is a strong ambience down here. i don’t know if it’s the bats or the decaying - everything. it’s quite homey.”
“it’s nice to see heroes are as awful as the rest of us.”
“unusually polite for a god.”
“of all the places you dragged me, this might just be the most foul. and that is saying something, given some of the things you exposed me to.”
“i mean, i hate to judge the proverbial book, but that oath may be all cover and no pages.”
“a shapeshifter? it could be anyone. i mean - it’s not me. but it could be anyone else.”
“sometimes we need to think with our heads before our knifes, dear.”
“you could watch for anyone acting strangely, but - well, you know the lunatics we camp with.”
“thank you. for being that evil bastard.”
“can you feel that? the dark, it’s - hungry. best watch the shadows.”
“this place brings back the worst memories.”
“well, that’s disturbing. still, better than having an actual conversation with him though.”
“oh no. not again.”
“honestly, just once, could we end up somewhere normal?”
“i prefer to travel in smaller groups. it’s more… intimate.”
“nice as it is, she still doesn’t have the best hair in the camp.”
“thank goodness. i was worried i’d have to get involved. now, let’s keep our hands to ourselves.”
“i much prefer it when i’m the one prowling in the shadows - about to strike.”
“ah, nothing says ‘true love’ like faking your own death to avoid someone.”
“you’re not going to eviscerate him? i was hoping for a show.”
“it’s just a waste of a perfectly good cult we could be controlling.”
“can you - ugh, can you shut up and let me read?”
“i hate to be negative. but they’ll carve you up like a goose.”
“my, she sounds positively demented. i love it. let’s tell her everything.”
“you villain. i didn’t know you had it in you.”
“a well-presented face can open a lot of doors.”
“hardly a promising introduction.”
“do you mind? i’m brooding.”
“i’d rather be the only dark power inside your body, if it’s all the same to you.”
“easy now, let’s not do anything hilarious.”
“i’m with you, my dear. wherever this leads.”
“i appreciate anyone who opens a conversation with bodily harm.”
“nothing like a little camp drama to spice up the evening.”
“it’s almost a pity things ended up amicably.”
“what do you see when you look at me?”
“i would’ve liked more for my trouble than a pat on the head and vinegar for wine.”
“do you have any other chaos you need to unleash here?”
“all i want is a little fun. is that so much to ask?”
“don’t be so sour. i like a good time as much as anyone.”
“this seems like a lovely little spot. the sense of impending doom aside.”
"Wha-HEY!" Lilli dives after the weird device as if to intercept it, but she's not quite fast enough. The machinery goes up in flames.
...like a moth to a flame.
For a moment, the two women stand side-by-side, staring at the fireplace, dumbfounded.
"I assume it wasn't, uh. Supposed to do that." Her gaze is drawn to the other machinery scattered about. None of them look like they're supposed to be self-destroying robots (though she's no expert).
"What sort of things do you usually make?" She can't help but be curious after that particular display. Making sure not to touch anything else, she surveys the other tech stuff scattered about.
"I'm no engineer, myself... obviously. But I have friends who have built some pretty incredible things. I appreciate the science of machinery, even if I have little talent for building or using it."
Perhaps they'd agree to never speak of this again. This was truly embarrassing for the both of them.
Unfortunate machinery flying to its fiery death aside, her question bought pause to the doctor...Before she inevitably got very excited again, and quite literally dove to her desk.
"Oooooh!! No one's ever asked me that before!" Came a very excitable exclamation as the doctor began to throw papers everywhere, absolutely trashing the place.
"I found it!! Aha!! Take a look at this!!!" Before Lilli even had a say in the matter, Dr.Pennington was already rushing at her side, throwing a bit too friendly of an arm around the other. "Check it! Aren't they so precious!! Each with their own unique personalities and quirks..." Aubrey began to flip through her photo cards, notably, there seemed to be a main trio of robots that really got a majority of the photos...But it's only because they're the oldests!
"Pssh, it can't be THAT bad. I've stomached worse!"
Famous last words. Either way, she's not about to chicken out of a dare now, self-imposed or not; down the hatch it goes, knocking the concoction back at record speed!
She slams the cup down afterwards, purple tongue stuck out in a grimace.
"Blegh! That tasted like licking a battery!"
"...Now why are we going around licking batteries?" Perhaps some questions were better left unanswered?
"Keep me updated on your progress! Though, if there are any complications, please: hesitate to call!"
"Betcha I can drink all of it in a minute!"
Whatever it even was.
"If you end up getting heart palpitations, don't blame me!"
"Behold! Twenty five hour energy!" Shenanigans...
Shit, shit, shit. If she just puts this back here, and, uh... where did this piece go again?
"Oh!" Lilli stands up straight, nearly dropping the cable in her hand. "Is this stuff yours?" Clearing her throat, she hands over the wayward cord, running a hand through her hair.
"I wasn't trying to mess with anything! I bumped it and one of those wires came off, so I was trying to put it back like I found it." A glance back at the machine. Something had started beeping at one point...? That probably wasn't a good sign.
"I honestly don't know what I did, I was just trying to plug the thing back in..."
"Fortunately, the trinket is modular....And a little useless." All on purpose, it was just a simple circuit she'd built to pass the time.
"Now, let's see!" Aubrey gingerly plucked the device, and began reassembling it. And just like that, the machine whirred back to life and began spinning once more. It was like those simple toy dolls that could fly. And once it flew off the base.
It spun...
Directly into the lit fireplace.
"Oh my! Why don't we forget this happened!"
