thoughts on JN style contest spectaculars?

I hate the post-SM need to make the anime highly accurate to the games and how it kills creative endeavors. And I especially beloathe the death of contests with battles and the showcase/idol-ification of anime contests.

The fact that Serena was the only coordinator girlie to participate in a contest post DP and said contest didnt even have a battle round makes me livid. Is such a stupid retcon that makes a deliberate effort to ignore May and Dawn's contest connections and achievements simply to not conflict with the new bullshit decisions made; and in turn their stories are made irrelevant and their whole characters thrown under the bus. But even Serena's character, who was not originally a coordinator suffers so much with that stupid change!?

The fun thing about Serena doing contests post Kalos was the fact she would be forced to battle, something the writers never allowed her to before. It would force her to learn something new, to fail and actually have to make effort to become better and developt her craft. It would allow her understand how there's many ways to deepen your bond with pokemon but also how to "make people smile" as in, a good battle can make the audience much more inspired than a simple dance show.

AND THEN SHE DOESNT DO THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD BE INTERESTING OF HER TO DO! And the worst part? the writers barely even changed her stupid routine from kalos!? Serena doing contests implied so much growth for her character and in the retconning, the writers actually prevented her from any actual growth??? Changing contests style activelly ruined EVERY SINGLE COORDINATOR'S STORY???? Is such a disrespect tho those girls and their stories.

And what was even the point? what was the point of creating showcases when you could've just called it regional contests? What was the point of having Serena participate in a contest if that was done the exact same way as Showcases? Why do they keep conflating contests with girls stuff now when it was never like that? MAY DIDNT EVEN HAVE A GIRL RIVAL GODDAMNIT?! and more importantly: WHY CAN'T GIRLS BATTLE?????

The only reason contests dont have battle rounds anymore is because it got turned into the "thing only girls do" and I just dont get why, in the world of pokemon, where battles are always said to be the rawest form of bonding and have fun with your pokemon, the girls are being deliberately forbidden of partaking in the most important aspect of the franchise????

#hated showcases from the start for this #ag & dp felt more like contests may sometimes get feminized in-universe but it isn't a gendered sport #may and dawn felt more like they were reacting to a larger world & serena was just supposed to invoke a concept of girlhood #since serena is emblematic of intrinsic value being tied to appearance rather than appreciating beauty #& it feels like the xy world was written retroactively around that rather than having her react to her environment #& also considering how her arc was a rehash of both may + dawn it does feel like she was supposed to be the magnum opus of pokégirl tropes #since only one girl can exist at a time i fuqin guess #+ it was ultimately supposed to make ash look higher on a hierarchy through her crush on him not build up serena as someone that felt real #& then she doesnt give an ass abt him in journeys so then contests become showcases bc they need to keep the idol thing going #& serena being that magnum opus means that she's 'replacing' may and dawn in that way #totally blows up any arc that may & dawn had 100% yes yes. & also fucks ash in DP with the wallace cup & counter shield #(which throws up all over ash & paul's rivalry though they tend to do that by not challenging paul's mindset all that much)#but also what about DREW. what about ZOEY. contests are about HIGH FASHION not this IDOL NONSENSE!!!!!

Harley from Pokémon Advanced! 🌈🌵 Done with Uni Posca paint markers and Sakura Pigma Micron pens on cardstock paper. Instead of doing the lineart on top of the paint, I inked it first, scanned it, painted it, scanned it again, and finally combined the two scans digitally through Clip Studio Paint. I forgot to add the shine to his lip with gel pen, so I ended up doing that digitally.
