Getting older

Today my aunt died. While I did not know her very closely she was the sister of my father. The one man who I respect and care for more than any other human being. I tried to imagine what it would feel like to lose my sister, I tried to imagine what that sudden shock did to him realizing that he’s approaching the end too. He’s still healthy but life is full of twists. He’s undoubtedly at the point where it could happen in 20 years, 5 years, or even tonight. I don’t like thinking about these things. They’re painful, they make me anxious, naseuos. They probably make my father feel more so those things than I could possibly imagine. We’re going to go on a road trip to Texas to be at the memorial service and to try our best to respectfully reconnect with family that was affected by her passing. For my father he wants a chance to leave something of his sister with her children that might broaden the perspective of their memories of her. For me I’m going to support my dad. I can’t share stories of an aunt I hardly knew, but I can show my respect to a family member who was a piece of the puzzle that is my father. One day I will hold a memorial service for my father, and I’ll remember how my cousins felt at the loss of their mother. It’s a feeling I don’t want to be ready for, but I’m getting older and these things happen all the time.
