This is totally out of the blue but I just remembered the film 'The Impossible' and got really freaking rageful.
I think that film is positively revolting and was honestly shocked and appalled at the lack of protest it received. Because it is a film that essentially gives an 8th (possibly more) of the world the middle finger and says, 'We don't care about you or where you live, we just want to know when the pool bar will be reopened'.
But here's a thought; if you struggle with what is so totally wrong with film's like 'The Impossible' then let's take it from a purely movie goers perspective.
Hollywood, probably (yeah no definitely) the most influential and widespread media producer in the world, has settled upon this concept that white people (to which it would argue to be it's 'mass audience', a false in itself) can only have the capacity to care about other white people. Even worse if you happen to be American as this usually stems to the further idea that Americans only have the capacity to care about other Americans.
Now as a member of the audience, especially applicable if you are white and American, how does that not piss you right off? How are you not monstrously insulted but that? That this unrelenting media source advertises, to the world, that you are close-minded and selfish individuals.
Does't it make your blood boil? That Hollywood demonstrates you to care more about freaking animals then other human beings simply because of trivial shit such as the colour of their skin or the language they speak. Because, I'm not like that, and I know most people are not like that. One of the many reasons films like 'The Impossible' make me feel so disgusted is because I think, 'how dare you insinuate I'm anything like that. How dare you insinuate I don't care'.
So here is an idea, next time a film like 'The Impossible' comes along don't just mindlessly reach for your wallet in the cinema foyer. Think. Put that $7 back in your pocket and walk the fuck away. Demand more credit as an audience member and a consumer, demand some God damn respect and respect for, in this instance, people who have lost so much and couldn't even be given a chance to tell a story that was theirs.
If you don't respond then we are going to continue to just get the same rehashed shit on our screens rather than actually hear some incredible stories from all over the globe. And we are going to continue getting unjustly treated as, not only dumb, but also as arseholes.
