A pre-poo is the conditioning treatment applied to the hair prior to washing/shampooing. This conditions the hair cuticles prior to washing the hair to prevent any damage done by the manipulation done to the hair while washing. There are different types of pre-poos. I do the conditioner and oil one because that’s what my hair usually needs.
Conditioner ( I use the Palmers Olive Oil Formula W/Vitamin-E Condition Replenish)
Spray bottle with warm water in it
Rattail comb (for sectioning the hair)
Plastic bag or shower cap
Hair steaming cap/hooded dryer
I started with my hair just taken out of a flat twist protective style.
I divided my hair into six sections. It is easier to work in sections so you make sure the product gets to every single hair strand.
After dividing the sections, I clip each section up.
I start with one section, spraying water on it and finger detangling the section.
I apply my DIY pre-poo oil mix to the hair. starting from the roots to the tips. I make sure I massage the oil into my scalp and into my hair strands. With low porosity hair, I have to take time to work the products into my hair to get the full benefits. The hair is already beginning to feel soft during this process.
Then I use my wide tooth comb to comb out all the tangles. Going from tip to root to ensure that I’m not snagging the hair, causing any breakage.
I apply conditioner to the hair and twist the section away.
I repeat steps 1-6 for the other 5 sections.
When I’m done, I put a plastic bag over my head and put the hair steamer over it. I leave this on for about 15 -30 minutes and while this is going on, I find other things to do in the house.
When this is done, I hop in the shower to wash my hair.
