I'm 17 and just got diagnosed with t1d in December 2016. I just got a pump (I have gastroparesis as well) and idk I feel like I'm so new to this that I am in the purgatory between being healthy and people who have had t1d for years? Like. 'Veterans' exclude me bc I'm new, but I'm obviously not healthy. Idk when will I fit into the community?

Hey! I’m really, really sorry that you’ve had this experience. That is seriously not fair. As far as I’m concerned, this community does not have a hierarchy on the basis of length of time with diabetes, and it’s really messed up that you’ve had interactions that suggest that there is such a hierarchy. Thank you for bringing it to my attention, and I will personally try and be more conscientious in making sure that I never perpetuate this idea in any way.

I can’t really answer your question about when, exactly, you’ll feel as if you will fit in to the community because, honestly, I didn’t have a similar experience and I do not really know what it means to “fit in” here because our community is so large and exists on so many different platforms, both online and irl. If anyone else out there has had a similar experience, PLEASE help our new friend out with some of your insight. It breaks my heart that you are going through this, but I know for a fact that there are many fellow type 1 diabetics out there that will not harbor these same pointless notions that you’ve been victim to and will welcome you with open arms. I recommend finding the smaller community within our GIANT community that is right for you. Finding just a couple type 1 diabetic peers that you are comfortable with is enough (in my opinion) to reap the benefits that this community provides. I’m happy to talk/rant with you anytime, if needed!

Please know that you are just as much a part of this community as anyone else, and I sincerely hope that you start to feel that soon. This community is about the shared struggles/triumphs/stories, not the “status”. To any other veteran T1Ds, please make sure that you are not contributing to this twisted mentality that ANY illness has a hierarchy. That is so beyond the point of what these communities are about.

I’ve been Diabetic for a pretty long time now and something I’ve come to realize is, the worst part about being Diabetic isn’t the shots and the bad blood sugars, it’s really the divide it creates between you and the people around you. This might be just me, but I’ll explain what I mean anyways.

A few years ago my mom passed away and since then I’ve felt this huge separation from the people around me. My mom was the person in my family who took care of me when I was diagnosed, who took me to support group, who knew the ins and outs of the disease as well as I did myself. My dad and my brothers don’t really even understand the basics of the disease and it’s kind of super upsetting. It isn’t just them, it’s my best friends, my co-workers, basically everyone around me doesn’t understand Diabetes. I’ve had some friends for twenty years that don’t know what it means when I say my sugar is low.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that everyone should know what an A1c is or what DKA is, but it would be nice for them to know the basics and for me to be able to connect with them about it. It’s a big part of my life. I can’t say that I’m mad at them for not knowing, but it would be really great if they did.

Sometimes I see things about “ways to love a Diabetic” or “how to show them you care” and to be completely honest, just learning about the Disease will suffice. Knowing what insulin does, what high and low blood sugar is, and how to fix those things shouldn’t be too much to ask, so if you’re a non-Diabetic reading this get to it because we love you and show interest in you, so do us a small favor and learn about us.

i’m here for ALL diabetics..type 1, type 2, thin diabetics, fat diabetics, diagnosed before you could talk, diagnosed in adulthood, in control of your bg, never able to get a grip on your bg, high A1c, low A1c, perfect A1c, from a family with history of diabetes, being the only person you even know with diabetes, diabetics who feel ashamed and those who are very confident and comfortable with themselves, those who can’t afford insulin, diabetics on pumps, diabetics who only do injections, those who ARE afraid of needles and those who don’t bat an eyelash when it’s time to stick yet another needle in your body, ALL DIABETICS..we don’t fit into simple type 1 vs type 2 categories, we are ALL amazing and tough people battling something we didn’t ask for OR DESERVE and I love ALL of us..in case the idea that you have to be the perfect diabetic is weighing you down, you are valuable and a very very valid part of the diabetic community and I’m happy to have you all around❤️
