Imagine being Mr. and Mrs. Freud and finding out about your son’s theory.
every artist who has ever attempted to satirize masculinity i am so sorry
you could name a movie Portrait of a delusional abuser ruining his own life in pursuit of a fictional standard of manhood and 89% of its fanbase would still be like "Fuck yeah man it was so cool when Shit Cumdick gave that badass speech about how pushing everyone away and never letting yourself feel emotions is actually a good idea for your life. fuckin dope flick"
Every single time I see a take that amounts to "if you write about X happening, or like fiction where X happens, you like X" I'm reminded of this one time I was at a casual friends house as a young kid. We were in her room, pretending to "be orphans" escaping from an evil orphanage and having to take care of each other and fend for ourselves. It was all very Little Orphan Annie/All Dogs Go to Heaven and based on the 80s pop media.
And this girl's mom comes in, hears what we're playing and gets all MAD and UPSET. She says that if we play act something, it's because we want it to happen. So her daughter must WANT HER TO DIE.
First off lady, we were 6 year year olds, so take it down several notches. We barely had a concept of mortality for fucks sake. She made us feel so guilty and ashamed, because she was taking our game personally.
Now I have a 5 year old. And sometimes she looks at me and says "pretend you're dead, and I have to -" Whatever it is. Some adult task she's assigned herself.
And it's just so transparently obvious that she's practicing the idea of having to do things on her own. Which is exactly what 5 year olds are supposed to do. I actually find it very flattering that the only way she can envision me not being available to help her is to be literally deceased. Otherwise, obviously, she wouldn't have to do scary hard things alone.
It's a natural coping mechanism. She's self-soothing about what would happen if I wasn't there by play-acting independence in a perfectly safe environment. She's also practicing skills she needs, and making up excuses for practicing them on her own, without taking on the responsibility of being able to do them by herself all the time yet.
Humans mentally rehearse bad this in their brains all the time. We can do that by ruminating- going over worries over and over again, which tends to lead to anxiety and helplessness and depression. Or we can do it with a sense of play- by recognizing that the fiction is fiction and we can dip our toe into these experiences and expose ourselves to bad things without actually being injured.
My daughter does not want me dead. And I don't want bad things to happen in real life. But fiction and pretend help me face the horrors of the world and think about them without collapsing or messing myself up mentally.
I do not ask this lightly, the Missouri AG’s office has started a site to build a list of trans people. Clog the system. That’s the life of a trans kid who gets another day on this earth. Spam the fuck out of it, it’s not sophisticated. You don’t need to use a real email. Post as much as you’d like
Hi! Transgender Missourian here. DO NOT DO THIS. DO NOT SUBMIT ANYTHING TO THIS SITE.
This is not to “collect a list of trans people”. This site was created to collect fake complaints specifically about the Transgender Center at Washington University Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. It was only uploaded because the A.G.’s “investigation” into the Transgender Center turned up nothing, so they want people to submit lies to justify shutting down the Center (which is the only one in the region).
In February, a former non-medical employee of the Transgender Center published a viral op-ed about how the Center was “mutilating children”. Every. Single. Thing. She said was a lie, and she shared identifying information about trans patients. She went straight to the Missouri Attorney General asking him to ban trans healthcare in the state.
The far-right A.G. complied and immediately opened an “investigation” into the Center.
We heard nothing for a month, demonstrating that the “investigation” found no evidence to support the government’s transphobic agenda. THAT IS WHEN THEY CREATED THIS WEBPAGE. THEY WANT PEOPLE TO SUBMIT THINGS. THEY WANT LIES. THEY WILL BELIEVE ANYTHING CRUEL ABOUT TRANS PEOPLE.
Investigations by the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Missouri Independent, and NPR, who interviewed an enormous number of patients from the Center, found no evidence to support this former employee’s transphobic claims, nor evidence to support banning trans healthcare altogether (of course).
Despite no evidence, on April 13th, 2023, the Attorney General announced that all transgender healthcare will be illegal in the state beginning April 27th.
THE FAR-RIGHT STATE GOVERNMENT IS FISHING FOR FAKE “EVIDENCE”. DO NOT GIVE IT TO THEM.
Please actually learn about the situation and check with the people on the ground before you spread misinformation like this. Although some people may have good intentions, this will hurt trans people.
If you see this misinformation going around, please correct it (I’ve seen 3 posts like this in the last day).
I want everybody who’s calling Ken a Trophy Husband to know that he’s actually a Trophy Boyfriend, because when Ruth Handler invented Ken in the 1960s, she was adamant that he would never marry her and instead be her “handsome steady”, so that Barbie remained a figure of independence for the little girls and was never put in the position of housewife.
Her house is hers. She bought it and furnished it with money she made in her own job. In STEM, in politics, in healthcare, in fashion, in academy, in customer service. Her credit card is in her name (women in the US couldn’t have their own regardless of marital status until 1974). And it’s all pink and fashionable because femininity and badassness aren’t mutually exclusive. No matter who you are, you can be anything.
That’s why Barbie’s slogan is “you can be anything”. Teaching these ideals to little girls is why Barbie was created. Empowering women and empowering femininity is the original meaning of the Barbie doll. It’s not that you have to be all this to be a woman, but if you are all or some of this, you too are awesome.
And somehow pop culture deliberately changed that narrative. Sexualised, bimbofied, and villainised her, when she actually isn’t responsible for the impossible beauty standards — people are, she’s just a stylised, not-to-scale toy like most others.
Men are frothing because he’s just Ken and I guess they were expecting her to be just Barbie, but that’s exactly what Ken is. Canonically. A badass woman’s himbo boyfriend.
This movie has the potential to change the way we collectively see Barbie radically into what Ruth Handler’s intended, I’m so very excited
That’s not conservatism. That’s fascism.
so... in an attempt to make my best friend watch the sandman, i created this powerpoint

orin scrivello from little shop of horrors is the most frustrating character in theatre. just conceptually. because an insane sadistic dentist who laughs himself to death on nitrous oxide is so sexy. but i can’t crave that energy can i? because he had to go and be a domestic abuser as well. for fucks sake
How are we doing today ladies. Are we still losing it. Are we going completely insane
It's so weird talking to people who's view of "here's the way life is for everyone" is shattered as soon as they talk to someone with disabilities (physical, mental illness, any). Like you'll say you'll have a problem and instead of helping you they'll argue with you about how you're not actually facing that problem. Like,
Me: Hey, I'm really struggling to find a job and a part of it is my resume. I was depressed & psychotic during highschool so I didn't do anything to gain skills or achievements to put on my resume. I also don't have anyone to put as a reference. What can I do?
Them: You can add your skills, hobbies, clubs you're in, and different volunteer work you've done! You can also get your teacher as a reference.
Me: I already know what to put on a resume, my issue is that I don't have things that I can use. Also, I'm in my mid 20s so I don't know if I can put my highschool teacher as a reference.
Them: Well if you're a part of a church or an activity group, you could add that. Also, think of any projects you've worked on in the past.
Me: I already know you can put these things on a resume. I'm not looking for suggests of things I've already done, I'm looking for what I can do now if I haven't done anything.
Them: There's no way you didn't do anything during highschool?? What about some odd jobs you definitely did for extra money, like babysitting or mowing the lawn?
Me: I spent all of highschool either in modified classes or in bed doing nothing - not even hobbies, what about that do you not understand?
And then you talk to someone who's also disabled and they're like "Here's a bunch of jobs you can do from home that don't pay much but look good on a resume, here's some free online courses that also look good on a resume, here's how you can be making small amounts of money in the meantime, here's some things you can put besides a professional reference, and here are your rights if your future employer tries to take advantage of your disability - which you probably shouldn't tell them about unless you need accommodations."
And suddenly my will to continue trying returns!
c...can we maybe get some of those ideas in full? Pls?
Two other people asked as well so okay! Though this post will be rather long.
Freelance Jobs You Do From Home That Look Cool On A Future Resume
Please research any company before sign up with then. So many companies are scams and pay you way less than you deserve for your work. Go to r/freelancers and search to make sure nobody has had some horrid experiences. There's also usually reviews of a company on YouTube as well.
Transcribing - adding subtitles to videos for deaf and other hard of hearing people. You usually read a big instruction manual, do two or three tests to see how well you can follow the instruction manual, and then get an e-mail if you can work with them or not. Depending on where you sign up, you can also fill out which topics you're knowledable on and less likely to make mistakes on when transcribing.
Translating - same as transcribing, but now you're translating one language into another. I have not done this before, so I'd suggest talking to people who have.
Article Writing - there are different websites you can sign up to work for where someone sends in a request for an article about a certain topic, you can write that article, and if they like it they can purchase it from you. Some websites have a ranking system where the more good reviews your article gets, the more money you'll get paid.
Article Editing - you can also get payed to fix typos and reorganize an article (or list) if writing isn't your thing.
Top 10 Lists - There are different sites that will pay you to write 10 ten lists. They usually require a specific amount of words and have an author's guide on their site.
Graphic Designer - if you go to different generic freelance websites, you can often find people who are searching for someone to design logos for their company or banners for their websites. It helps if you have a portfolio as well.
Virtual Assistent - scheduling appointments, answering calls, and managing email accounts from your own home. I haven't done this one so again, do more research.
Small Amounts Of Money
Qmee - I've been using this app for awhile called qmee where you do surveys for money. Surveys usually pay anywhere in between 30 cents and 2 dollars, and they have a feature where if the survey asks you anything sketchy then you can report them. You can also cash out whenever, like you don't have to build up a certain amount. (If you aren't American, you may only get a couple surveys per day.) An extra 20 dollars a month isn't much but it's nice.
Fiverr - A website where you state your talents and you can take on other people's smaller projects for small amounts of money. A funny example is this YouTube skit where someone paid some people on fiverr to come up with a break-up letter. I believe you can also keep a portfolio for any projects you make during your freelance jobs on fiverr too.
Redbubble - this is where you can put different designs onto different types of clothing, notebooks, mugs, hats, etc. It helps if you have a design that's from a fandom, references a meme, or fufills a niche. You can also go to TeeSpring if you want to put multiple designs on one item, but you'd have to promote your items yourself as TeeSpring has this issue where you can't search for new stores who aren't already popular.
Test Products - once again, please research any company you're going to do this for. There are companies that will send you products for a week or two and ask for a report on how well it works, what you like/dislike, etc.
If You Don't Have Anyone To Put On Your Resume As References
Volunteer Somewhere - animal shelters, tutoring, soup kitchens, summer programs, public libraries, etc. If you're able to volunteer somewhere, you can ask the people there if you can use them as a reference.
Volunteer Online - you can also do online volunteer work if you're unable to do physical volunteer work. Here's a list of examples of online volunteer work which includes things like creating a large amount of thank-you cards, transcribing books into digital form, or answer texts or calls on a crisis line. This may be a better option due to covid.
Add Personal References - friends and family members do work (just don't list them as professional references). It's especially helpful if you've done a project for/with them as well.
Or don't add references at all - references look good on a resume, but unless you're writing a federal resume you kind of don't need them? If someone is interested in hiring you, they may ask if you have any references. You can just say "no, this is my first job" (if it is). They might ask why you haven't worked before, but you can just say that it's personal or private information. Or you can give a vague answer like dealing with family matters.
Once you have some, this is how you would format your references.
None of these are long term solutions and not everything will work out for everybody. These are just helpful suggestions I've received over the years!
May I add Zooniverse for participating in citizen science projects? It gives you a Research Background, plus you can talk about admin/data entry etc
There's also a whole bunch of YouTube tutorials for learning Excel. And, if you've a mind to learn it, there's a mapping software called QGIS that's free to download, and the internet is full of tutorials. If you can learn it, it is an EXTREMELY sought-after skill in a lot of fields.
You can also do volunteer transcription/tagging for the US National Archives. This is visual transcription if you’re like me and can’t do audio transcription. Just look up Citizen Archivist National Archives and it comes right up.
Sometimes it is your fault.. Sometimes you don’t listen well enough, you’re selfish, you’re rude and you aren’t always right. Sometimes you fucked it up and tbh that’s okay. It happens, learn from it, apologize and keep it moving. Just because you fucked up doesn’t mean you’re a bad person. Don’t dwell on it
no but this is so important.. it’s so important to just accept you can fuck up you’re allowed to fuck up. you’re allowed to be wrong and it won’t be shameful, it won’t be the worst thing to happen. you’ll either let it go or learn from it and not let it happen again and that’s good.
am i having emotions about how one of Gilbert Baker’s last actions was to add a ninth stripe to his original pride flag to represent diversity and to protest conservatism? absolutely.
here is Gilbert Baker’s 2017 nine-striped diversity pride flag:
ALT
the lavender represents diversity. the pink represents sex or sexuality (different sources say different things). the red represents life. the orange represents healing. the yellow represents sunlight. the green represents nature. the turquoise represents magic and art. the indigo represents serenity and harmony. the purple represents spirit.
actually, i’m going to have more emotions about how Gilbert Baker mentioned that he struggled to make rent but watched corporations make millions off rainbow products. and how three months after Gilbert Baker added a lavender diversity stripe to his original design (which was already a rainbow to represent the fact that the queer community should be all-encompassing without prioritizing one group over the others) the city of Philadelphia added black and brown to the six-stripe version to represent QPOC. and how people have been adding the trans stripes and the intersex circle. and QPOC and trans people and intersex people deserve way more than we’ve given them. but also there isn’t a consensus within the intersex community that being intersex is inherently queer. and i’m having emotions about how the original flag was meant to be correct no matter which stripe you put on top, because your orientation doesn’t make you any less valid no matter what it is.
anyway i love the sentiment behind the progress pride flags and it is tragic that the more colour, more pride flag was made because QPOC were being denied access to gay bars on the basis of dress code. at the same time, we cannot let ourselves forget Gilbert Baker’s lavender diversity stripe.
adding more in honour of pride month 2022. when pink and turquoise were removed, ¼ of the meaning was removed. while the six-stripe version is definitely more recognizable and easier to produce, online spaces don’t have to worry about finding sufficient fabric. there is no reason for the lavender stripe pride flag to be so obscure.
“Walking down Castro Street, I can’t pay my rent, but I see rainbow dildos in the shop windows and rainbow keychains, rainbow rings, rainbow candles and so on.” - Gilbert Baker, 2017
you might notice that i’ve reused that source. the truth is, i can’t find more information online about the lavender stripe diversity pride flag. i keep calling it by different names because there is no official or agreed-upon name for it.
there is no reason for us to ignore the 2017 nine-stripe pride flag. honour queer history. know about gilbert baker’s last action. i don’t care whether or not you use it. but please, please learn about it.
