And ever as I wander, I'm keeping you in sight
You're a candle in the window on a cold dark winter's night
And I'm getting closer than I every thought I might
The wonderful @fadedjacket has outdone herself with this incredible piece! I will never find the right words for how much it means to me, seeing their happy end brought to life so beautifully
You can’t just tell people to ‘get a VPN (Virtual Private Network)’. Buying a VPN is like buying a house. It’s very very important. Having no VPN or having a ‘wrong’ one can seriously damage your life. Especially for Americans because their privacy laws are garbage. I am going to try explain why you should get a VPN but bare with me, I am from Germany and my English is far from perfect.
Let’s start with a simple test.
Click this link here: https://whatismyipaddress.com/
It will tell your IP adres, your ISP (internet service provider), and your location. The location might not be very accurate, but then again, it’s just a simple website. Imagine what the government can do!
So basically, everyone can find out where you live. But there is more danger. Your ISP. Your ISP logs your every move online and they are required to keep it in case the government wants access to it (or if a 3rd party wants to buy your data (yikes). They have everything. What websites you visit. How long you stay on a website. What you download. Your search terms. European laws are more subtle on this but if you are from the US you are #@*#&, especially because Trump doesn’t support the open internet. It’s scary but maybe in the future you can’t get a job because the recruiter knows your searched on ‘how to deal with depression’ or anythings else that’s supposed to be private because it’s your f*cking right. Or you get a $100k fine because you pirated a movie 15 years ago. You need a VPN. You’re dumb for not using one. but what does a VPN do?
A VPN encrypts all your data so if it were be intercepted no one can ‘crack the code’ and damage your privacy.
Usually being online goes like this (simplified): Your computer —-> ISP (—–> keeps data —–> sells it)
But with a VPN it goes like: Your computer —–> VPN (encrypts data)—–> ISP (ISP can’t see shit)
Furthermore, a VPN hides your IP address and location by giving you another IP address located in Spain for example (you can often choose from a list and change as many times as you want).
Now that you know why you should get a VPN and what is does it is important to educate yourself because people often choose the wrong VPN. VPN providers are also businesses and have to obey the law. If you choose a VPN provider located in the US then you are throwing your money away because the laws in the US shits on your privacy. If the US gov wants the provider to give all their logs they have to obey. The ISP still can’t see what you are doing online and sell your data but the US gov can interfere with your VPN provider so NEVER CHOOSE A PROVIDER LOCATED IN THE US.
I just wanted to make that very clear so my followers don’t buy false security.
There is still more danger!
Who says your VPN provider isn’t selling your data? You need to check their logging policy. Do they keep logs? If yes, what for? For how long do they keep them? Tip: Choose a provider who doesn’t keep logs
More about law
The US is part of the Five Eyes program (the worst):
The Five Eyes, often abbreviated as FVEY, is an intelligence alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. These countries are bound by the multilateral UKUSA Agreement, a treaty for joint cooperation in signals intelligence (source)
There is also a Nine Eyes (bit better) and Fourteen Eyes Program (better).
You don’t want a VPN provider who is located in one the Five Eyes countries.
If you had to choose go for a provider located in a country that’s part of the Fourteen Eyes Program or even better, go for a country that isn’t part of any program!
I know this is a shitty explanation and please pardon my english but now it’s time to do your own research. Take your privacy seriously. Maybe WWIII breaks out and you get killed for liking the ‘wrong’ FB-page.
Go to this website: https://thatoneprivacysite.net/simple-vpn-comparison-chart/
Make sure that your future VPN provider both has green boxes for Privacy Jurisdiction and Privacy Logging.
I recommend ovpn.se and trust.zone. ovpn is located in Sweden so they are part of the 14 Eyes Program and they keep minimal logs. Their business ethics, however, are alright.
Trustzone is located in the Seychelles. No country can interfere and their privacy jurisdiction is the best you can get. The US want your data but needs to get it from Trustzone? The Seychelles will simply give them the finger and wave them goodbye. However, this makes this provider very appealing for people who torrent and criminals because they keep no logs (and that is how it shoud be) Also, there are almost no marketing efforts so this provider is one the cheapest)
Also, often providers such as ExpressVPN are being called ‘The Best’ on websites about VPNs but know that this is just marketing which also makes those provider more expensive (and they too shit on your privacy)
This must be the worst article you have ever read but please, please take your privacy very seriously.
EDIT: I got many people asking me which provider I use. For those who want to know, I use Trust Zone. They offer a free 3-day trial with no strings attached. But still do your own research!
I am also with Trustzone but I think you forgot to explain one of it’s most important features. It protects you when you are using someone else’s Wi-Fi.
If you are at Starbucks and you use their Wi-Fi your privacy is at risk. Anyone with ill intentions could steal your information. Especially if you are using an unsecured Wi-Fi hotspot. With a VPN your data gets encrypted so no one can steal it.
Wait, what’s going, on? Did trump destroy internet privacy with a bill or something? Where’s the news? Oh wait, why am I getting visions of Alex Jones and selling water purifiers?
He hasn’t yet but he says he wants to. And if he is serious about it it would be really easy to do. Since all our data is already recorded, as the person above explained.
@elvesfromthedeep just brought the current situation in the US to my attention (March 30, 2017).

Anger as US internet privacy law scrapped
Congress just voted to let internet providers sell your browsing history
To all my friends in the US, please read this entire post. Making everyone aware of VPNs is going to be my mission. Your privacy matters. Please reblog this post.
Don’t tell me you just wanted to scroll past this. Stop looking at pictures of cats for a moment, okay? Don’t you realize how important this is? This is dangerous! ‘America, the best FREE country in the world’ my ass.
With this new law your ISP can sell your Internet history which could include passwords, usernames, religion, credit card numbers, race and much more to the highest bidder. So here is what I want you to do.
You are going to read the whole thing and before you think ’this is so important. Let me reblog this real quick and go back to admiring cats again-’ NO! Don’t reblog this. Take action first. Then reblog. Sign up for a free trial! Trust.Zone offers one (here). Yes. It might be difficult to set up a VPN for some people. But is that going to stop you from protecting yourself and your family? 30 minutes. 30 minutes is all that it takes. 5 if you know how to install software. The problem with some of you is that you see ‘difficult’ as something negative. I want you to see difficult differently. I need you to push through this stuff. You are going to protect yourself. There is nothing negative about that.
VPNs are fun and costsaving too! A VPN bypasses geographical restrictions so you can access websites you normally can’t or you could start Netflix’s one month free trial over and over again- forever. And it’s legal! (unless you use it to buy weapons etc.,)
Don’t tell yourself that you are too tired and that you will do this tomorrow. Because that isn’t going to happen and you know it. You have to do this right now. You only have to click on it. Don’t let this/shit/life just happen to you. Take yourself seriously. Get a VPN.
Privacy is not a privilege, it’s a fundamental human right
Hey is thatoneprivacysite still good? The link works and it does take me to an article about vpns, but it just looks like an ad for expressvpn with extra steps.
I had Trust.Zone when this post first started making the rounds on Tumblr and I forgot about it after Biden took office. I recently sent them an email asking why my subscription wasn’t automatically renewed and why their website hasn’t changed since 2017(?). Their answer:
Shady people, good people, this company only cares about privacy and doesn’t care who it serves. But now with Trump and Musk this is the only VPN I’ll use.
I understand some people might not want to use this VPN on moral grounds, but it’s genuinely one of the very few VPNs set up in a way that no authority can touch you. ExpressVPN and other ‘popular’ options operate in jurisdictions favorable for profits but their privacy is just a band-aid our government can easily rip off if it demands information. I’m a trans man, I’m afraid of our government, and at this point, I simply don’t care anymore.
For a second I was like noooooo, not this long post again! Haven’t seen it in years and I always thought it was a bit extreme and exaggerated. Now that we are in 2025, I am like, nahh, these people knew what they were talking about all along. First time I am reblogging this.
The argument against VPNs has always been, “but I have nothing to hide.” Now that an unpredictable lunatic is in charge, purging based on whatever whim strikes him, that sentiment is quickly fading. VPNs aren’t just about hiding personal secrets; they’re about protecting freedom, autonomy, and your basic right to live without unjust scrutiny or arbitrary persecution.
I know this might make people mad, but absolutely refusing to even attempt to treat your mental illness, and instead just endlessly inflicting your unmitigated episodes on the people around you, is abusive. Your loved ones are not stress toys that you can just squeeze every time you feel bad. It is bad if someone says your repeated behavior is hurting them, and you take no steps to change. I know damn well that you can’t always help how your brain acts, but I’ve also spent a lot of years trying to stop my spiraling brain in its tracks, work on strategies to calm down, and consider the impact I’m having on others, because I grew up in a household with people who have the attitude of, “I have the right to consume all the attention in the house and drain your energy every single day because I feel miserable, and you’re the bad guy if you say that I’m making you feel bad and that I need to get help. I can treat you however I want because of my anxiety.”
Not people saying “Fandom has always been like this” in that vent post I made. No. It hasn’t always been like this. Fandom has NEVER been like this until recently and if you were in fandom pre-tumblr purge, pre-twitter, pre-netflix boom, pre-tiktok….then you would fucking know it was nothing like this.
We still had the drive to create. We still sold prints and charms and made zines…but it was never like this.
The introduction of streaming, binge shows that drop all at once, tiktok and vine RIP i still love u vine but you were the beginning of a particularly ugly era) creating this bite sized, quick paced ‘content’ era of creation and it bled out into fucking everything else.
Fandoms didn’t die down when the show ended or the season was over. You didn’t mass unfollow artist, writers or moots just because they changed fandoms. There wasn’t this need to please the algorithm in order for your posts to get seen by people and enjoyed.
Fandoms used to last YEARS. Star Trek is literally the oldest running fandom out there and you got people in there that could care less about the new stuff and still have been happily prancing through their fucking fifty year old fandom today. Hell, even SPN after all it’s fuckups and shitshows has a dedicated fanbase STILL creating tons of art and fic.
There is no patience anymore. No calm feeling of taking in fandom and friends at a pace that which doesn’t make you stressed and is still fun.
Do I blame fandom for this? Of course not, but people are complacent with it and start changing their vocab to accommodate and end up making the situation so deep it cant be fixed.
We call Art & Fic Content now, completely stripping the value of what it is to a level of consumerism instead of personal entertainment & community bonding.
A quick little something I wrote inspired by @sprainedwriting amazing college AU Adam, I can not recommend that story enough! I just needed this man to be pathetic and soft (Hope ye enjoy)
A soft knock on your door had you looking up, followed by a wispy moan: “Help me.”
Your eyes widened. That sounded straight out of a zombie movie.
Shoving the class notes from your lap, you warily made your way towards the door. The neighbourhood wasn’t the best, and it was not unusual to have drunks in the hallway of the house.
“Babe c`mon I know you’re home now let me in.”
That had you taken aback, not in a million years would you have recognized Adam with this croaky excuse for a voice.
“Are you okay?”
He didn’t even wait for you to fully open the door and pushed himself inside, mumbling “Fucking finally.”
His tall figure was slightly slouched, and you could see the worn out Band Shirt clinging to his sweaty chest. Before you could ask anything else, he pulled you towards him, letting his head slump onto your shoulder with a sigh. “I think I’m dying.”
Oh. He had the sniffles.
“Did you actually drive here?”
Adam hummed affirmatively while letting his fingertips sneak under your shirt. “Take care of me please?”
He must have a fever too because you never heard him pathetically beg for anything like that, and you would lie to yourself if you said it didn’t tug on your heartstrings.
“Alright you big baby, let’s get you to bed.”
Without any complaints or innuendos he let you lead him to your bed and waited for you to make space. “I have exams in two weeks,” you warned. “If you get me sick…”
The threat got interrupted by the loudest sneeze in mankind. You were sure the neighbours two stories below you would hand in a noise complaint about that. Maybe the building's rat got so intimidated by the sound and left, thinking there was a giant predator nearby.
“Do you want chicken soup?”
You were a little overwhelmed by the situation, not being the best at taking care of yourself and kind of neglecting the whole rest and hydration rule whenever you were sick, but now you had to step up.
Adam looked up from your note with glassy eyes, his disdain for privacy did not even baffle you at this point in your relationship. “I don’t know, I hate feeling this shit. Make it go away.”
His whining was almost funny, but you knew better than to mock him and quickly turned towards the small kitchen isle and put the one pot you owned on the stove top, hiding your grin by rummaging in the cupboard for the ingredients.
Instead of sitting his ass down he kept fussing around you, resting his chin on top of your head while you stirred the soup and inspecting the few spices you owned, whenever you wanted to use them. “Look at you having that housewife shit down, cooking for me and being all sexy.”
“Why don’t you lie down hm?”
Adam cursed after blowing his nose. “But that’s so boring!”
“You need to rest if you want to get better.”
“Y’know what else helps? Sweating it out.” He wiggled his eyebrows with a sleazy grin, only to have his moment ruined by another sneeze. This time you couldn’t help the giggles escaping.
“You bitch,” Adam looked at you aghast, putting a hand on his chest. “Amused by my suffering.”
Still grinning, you filled him a bowl and pointed him towards your desk. “Will you survive for a bit on your own?” At his pained look you added: “I want to get you some medicine.”
“Can’t you Uber that shit?”
Sometimes you forget how different your lives actually were, and it dawned on you, that this was probably the first time Adam had to fend for himself when sick. Well, sort of.
“The pharmacy is just down the road, I won’t be long.”
Adam grumbled but reached into the back pocket of his jeans before throwing his wallet to you.
“Get yourself something nice too, maybe one of those short nurse dresses?” He smirked again. “Bet that’s gonna have me feeling real good.”
Placing the bowl on the desk you smacked his arm lightly and got dressed to leave. “Eat your soup while it’s hot.”
With your backpack filled with various pills, nasal spray, tea and cough drops you fumbled around in your jacket to find the key but the noises from the other side of your apartment door had you stop and put your ear against the wood.
You felt like an adventurer at the entrance of a dragon's den. Slow and rhythmic rumbles came from the inside, so loud and deep you could almost feel the vibration of it.
As quiet as possible you unlocked the door, poking your head in to see Adam had taken over your bed. It was way too small for a man of his size, but he had curled himself into your blanket, wrapping his arms around the pillow with his face smushed into it. Smiling you took in the sight, his hair a tousled mess, lips slightly parted, he drooled a little and his broad chest softly rose with each snore. He must have tossed and turned a lot because the blanket was tangled between his legs, and the shirt rode up a little, exposing his soft stomach.
He looked so peaceful then he cracked open an eye.
“Took you long enough.”
Rolling your eyes you sat down on the edge of the bed, unpacking your bag. While you got him a glass of water, he inspected the medicine you got him.
“How are you feeling?” You put the glass into his hands and carefully brushed the hair from his brow to feel his temperature. Adam just cleared his throat, not saying anything for a while which started to worry you.
“Thanks for caring. Next time get me something cherry flavoured, I hate that fucking lemon stuff.” He quickly looked away and swallowed the pills, trying to gloss over the vulnerability he just displayed. You smiled when you tugged at his shoulders to put his head in your lap, massaging his scalp and letting your fingers run through the brown strands. Instantly his arms wrapped around your thigh, his big hands digging into the flesh like you were his lifeline.
“Want me to make you some tea?”
His grip on you tightened. “Don’t you fucking dare move.”
With that, you settled more comfortably against the pillows and closed your eyes, still massaging his head until the snores rivalling a dragon's growls hummed through your body, making your movements slower and slower.
The next morning, you woke up with a cough and Adam’s smug grin. “I read that cum is good for a sore throat.”
