original post [x]
this is the happiest day of my life
Too soon
65 million yearsâŠ
Donât worry, guys. Carl is clearly a brachiosaurus, which lived during the Jurassic period. (And before anyone says our lilâ boy Steve is a velociraptor and therefore puts our comic in the late cretaceous, aka the time of the cometâthat lil guy could easily be a compsognathus or a caudipteryx, both Jurassic-era species of small theropod dinosaurs. So the light getting bigger every night is going to pass by harmlessly, and Steve and Carl can go on enjoying the stars together until they die of old age, since Carl has very few natural predators at his size and I bet heâll protect Steve, if he needs it (though small, fast and carnivorous as Steve is, he probably wonât).Â
So itâs all good!!Â
That entire response explaining how these two characters didnât die a fiery death but instead lived long and happy lives literally made my day.
Iâm losing my fucking mind
This is the type of content I wanna see
Re-blog if you can write in cursive.
I heard cursive is dying. I want to see who still uses it.

me: WHEN YOUâVE GOT A LIBRARY CARD
Galileo: âThe sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do.â
The Catholic Church:
I have no patience for anti-Catholic ignorance today.Â
(Key term: Heliocentric - Earth revolves around Sun. The previous held view was Geocentric - Sun revolves around the Earth)
Galileo wasnât the first person to posit the theory of heliocentricity. In fact, Galileoâs work was built on the work of a dude named Copernicus
Copernicusâ most famous work, On the Revolution of the Celestial Orbs, in which he gave an excellent account of heliocentricity, was dedicated to Pope Paul III, for (st.) peteâs sake!
So needless to say, the Church did not take issue with the heliocentric worldview - it took issue with Galileo saying that a heliocentric worldview was contrary to scripture. It was not. This propagation of a false dichotomy would have caused crisis in the Church due to people believing they needed to choose between believing in reason/science and their faith. The Church and science have always been bros - they are both truth, so there is no conflict.
If Galileo had stuck to being a scientist and not taken it upon himself to interpret scripture, the Church would have embraced him and his work.
Another issue the Church had with Galileo was that he stated that the heliocentric worldview was fact before he had proof. The Church thought that was highly irresponsible as a scientist. Therefore, for these two reasons, it banned Galileo speaking/publishing on the subject.
GALILEO OBEYED THE CHURCH Â AND EVERYTHING WAS COOL FOR A WHILE
               U  N  T  I  L
The new head honcho Pope Urban VIII, a lifelong friend of Galileo, said that G could publish on the subject again, but only to discuss it as a theory, not a fact (remember, no one had proof of heliocentrism at the time) and just present arguments both for and against it.Â
It could not have gone worse:Â âWhen Galileo wrote the Dialogue on the Two World Systems, he used an argument the pope had offered, and placed it in the mouth of his character Simplicio. Galileo, perhaps inadvertently, made fun of the pope, a result that could only have disastrous consequences. Urban felt mocked and could not believe how his friend could disgrace him publicly. Galileo had mocked the very person he needed as a benefactor. He also alienated his long-time supporters, the Jesuits, with attacks on one of their astronomers. The result was the infamous trial, which is still heralded as the final separation of science and religion.â (x)
The trial was to determine if Galileo had broken the previous agreement to refrain from presenting heliocentrism as prooven fact and as contrary to scripture, NOT (as anti-Catholics love to claim) to say âstop it with your science stuff, it threatens our Church.â Galileo said he did not violate the agreement, but the trial ruled that he did, and thus Galileoâs penance was house arrest.
P.S. You know how you always hear that Galileo was âtorturedâ and stuff? Well that would be kind of hard to hide from Galileoâs friend Nicolini, Tuscan ambassador to the Vatican, who was responsible for overseeing Galileoâs âimprisonmentâ in his own home with servants and every convenience at his beck and call. Even an anti-Catholic historian of the time, Giorgio de Santillana, said he âadmired (the Churchâs) scruplesâ in the matter (as in, their fairness and fair treatment of G). Nevertheless, the Church has subsequently apologized for certain aspects of the trial and ruling.

You know what the annoying thing is though? I spent days researching and compiling this post, and Iâm certain it will be unseen, ignored, or dismissed by those who donât know what really happened. Prejudice against the Catholic Church is the only remaining socially acceptable prejudice.

Anyway, Iâve decided this spring to conquer the brick that is Les MisĂ©rables (the Hapgood translation b/c none of the public or college libraries around me have the Denny translationâŠ). I rewatched the 2012 film yesterday and found this gem from George Blagden, one of my favorite Grantaires. P.s. I hope everyoneâs had a good new years/Epiphany!

Whatâs Happening In My Country: Turkey
People, Iâm reporting from Ankara, Turkey, from my thankfully safe home⊠This is one of the strangest events in the Turkish history, and no one knows if itâs a real military coup, or a âfakeâ one organized by the government so that they can get stronger than ever. Right now, there are tons of jet planes flying above the city and bombing different places, such as the âpalaceâ of Erdogan, the parliament, the building of the political party AKP, the national intelligence agency of Turkey.
Erdogan literally told people to get out, to the streets, and protest the coup, and âstand in front of the tanksâ. And, shockingly, they did. Now, people are out in the streets, chanting âAllahu Akbar!â and attacking the soldiers. Everyoneâs gone crazy, Iâm so afraid that this will lead to a war.
The military took over the national channel of Turkey and forced a reporter to read out a declaration about the martial law. Now, the government has taken the channel back. The soldiers are getting arrested one by one. They declared that they had taken control of the coup, and Iâm sure that everyone will consider them (the government, Erdogan, etc.) âheroesâ from now on.
There are deaths, deaths of policemen, civilians⊠Itâs scary, Iâve never experienced something like this. I donât know how this happened, I donât know who did this, I donât know whatâs happening and whatâs gonna happen. I donât know what kind of a country I will wake up to, if I can convince myself to go to sleep in this chaos. I donât know if itâll be martial law or Sharia law, or Erdogan declaring himself a dictator. Iâm confused as hell.
But there is one truth: whoever did this, and for whatever reason they did this, this is not okay⊠I, and all the other people of Turkey, do not deserve to experience this fear, violence and chaos. Whatever happens, happens to the innocent. Let this be heard from all around the world, something strange, and something COMPLETELY CRAZY is going on. Let this be heard, this shouldnât be forgotten. The world shouldnât forget how a group of people literally played, and are still playing, with us like weâre toys.
In the following hours, they may cut off our internet, they may ban us from sharing the news with the world, they have done it before. For the sake of the people of Turkey, and for the sake of our worldâs future;
Help us, let this be heardâŠ

Re-enactment groups, collectors, historians and serving soldiers helped photographer Thom Atkinson assemble the components for each shot. âIt was hard to track down knowledgeable people with the correct equipment,â he says. âThe pictures are really the product of their knowledge and experience.â
