I get the reasoning for the metal shield, agility can be very important. As a less agile person, I'm more tempted to go for the wooden shield, as the wood can nicely bind on blades/axes/spikes, giving you a means to (somewhat) control the opponent's weapon.

If memory serves, viking shields tended to be made of softer woods, like linden, aiding this effect.

I would guess though that the wooden shield not just absorbs hits with the higher weight? It is harder to move a heavier object, especially with an impact, so your muscles wouldn't have to take nearly as much of the hit before getting it back in place. This is however based on engineering experience rather than experience with shields and weapons.
