“Whut?” Wayne asked, sparing half a second to glance over in James’ direction. He was trying to keep his eyes on the road, going at least five miles over the speed limit as he rushed them to the hospital as quickly as he felt was safe.

“Course it weren’t. Don’t git bears down here in Hawkins.” He muttered, his brow furrowing as he tried to remember the last time anyone around here had seen one. He vaguely remembered something about a news story involving an escaped black bear back in ‘69, but that had been from some zoo about three counties over. Although to be fair he couldn’t remember if they ever caught the thing.

He barely heard his uncle, he could still see it that thing, could still remember it’s eyes as it stood up, he had thought it was a deer at first when he stumbled upon it, a deer that was stuck with how it was hunched over .. but then it stood up, on two legs and spoke his name, in his brother’s voice . But this wasn’t Eddie .

James held his arm tighter it was starting to burn now the adrenaline dying down and the pain starting to set in, 3 large gashes soaking the shirt red . He felt numb and a bit cold. “ can’t feel my hand ..”

James’ announcement about his hand made Wayne’s blood run cold, the panic he’d done his best to chain down rattling hard inside his chest. Knuckles turning white against the steering wheel, he pressed harder on the gas, taking them from around 55 straight up into 70.

Traffic laws be damned. If the cops pulled them over he’d just have to hope whoever wrote the ticket would remember enough about human decency to take James the rest of the way to the doctor. “Just- just keep pressin’ on the wound, kid. Yur gonna be okay, yuh hear?”

“Jesus..” he gasped as they suddenly sped up he didn’t think he’d ever seen Wayne drive this fast before, he pressed harder on his wound, his upper arm throbbing as the bleeding slowed down, he was starting to sweat just a little feeling hot and sickly .

“Y-ya.. ya gonna be ok.. “ his mind kept going back to the forest, to that thing he saw to what he heard .. “.. uncle Wayne.. have you ever met something not of this earth?” He asked his brain slowly trying to come to terms with what he saw. “A monster ?”

James glanced upwards a little confused that he wasn’t being smacked upside the head yet. He was even more confused when Wayne walked away.

“..’where are we going ?” He asked as he quickly made to follow him.

“T’ go fix yur mess.” Wayne said gruffly, yanking open the door to his truck and climbing into the drivers seat. He waited until James had joined him inside and buckled up properly before heading out of the trailer park and turning down the road that lead back into town.

James made a face, flinching a bit from Wayne’s sudden movements and huffed looking out the window blue eyes hard and cold again, like they always got when he was in trouble . “.. not gonna let you shoot em..” he growled, it was something his dad would have done , thinking they were going into town to buy bullets .

Wayne didn’t respond to the declaration, too busy keeping his eyes on the road as he continued to bristle over what James had done.

When they pulled up in front of Hawkins Library, he quickly parked the truck and stepped out, closing the door behind him and climbing up the steps to the entrance. Keeping an ear out to make sure his nephew was still with him as he stepped inside.

James was even more confused now and got out stumbling after his uncle wary ness turned to confusion and curiosity, he never liked the library all that much, it was too quiet and made his skin crawl plus he always got the feeling the librarians were always judging him when he came in to actually read, he caught a few of them whispering they were surprised he could even read .

“.. why we here ?” He asked hands in his pockets trying to act tough.

Eddie smiled and nodded. "He was in the trash cans." He told him with a little laugh. "Uncle Wayne is never going to know. It'll be fine." He assured his little brother.

"Jesus Christ, James!" Wayne said, his eyes going wide at the marks on his nephew's arm. "What happened?! No wait -- save it fur the docturs, we're goin' tuh the hospital."

Fishing his keys from his pocket, he put his free hand on Jame's back and helped him into the truck before hopping in the driver's seat. Unbuttoning his flannel shirt, he tossed it into the kid's lap before starting the car. "Here, use this tuh help stop the bleedin'. An' put yur dang seatbelt on!"

James winched In pain as he got in the truck fumbling with the seatbelt having only one arm to work with, he took the flannel and pressed it to the three large gashes in his upper arm/shoulder area .

Blinking away tears and hissed as they hit a bump, “.. it’s not a bear ..” he mumbled eyes wide looking at nothing at all a thousand yard stare in his eyes .
