#DishOurNYC Last night we welcomed a New Year, and said goodbye to a place that played a significant role in our lives these past 20 years. Peasant, @cheffrankdecarlo ‘s Restaurant, on Elizabeth Street, New York City was built up by my good friends, Chef Frank DiCarlo and his wife Dulcinea Benson, and became a downtown institution. Moreover, it was a place in which we knew we can always count on being made to feel like home. We’ve made many friends there, celebrated many occasions, which include our post wedding bash, and our daughter’s christening party, and countless birthdays. If someone came to town and wanted a great eating experience, Peasant was always our go-to. On a technical standpoint, the dishes Frank created were, what we all felt, the best in a city filled with great food. Italian by category, but it’s more than that. It’s a classification all its own. Last night, I sat across from my daughter and couldn’t help but think that she grew up on the stuff he made. As I scanned the room, the faces that surrounded us were as much a part of the place as the dishes themselves. Peasant, was quite simply our “Cheers”. Of all the things that made Peasant feel like home, the one item that put the soul into the place was Dulcinea. She ran a seamless operation, which sometimes took a firm hand, but nobody had a softer heart. We will forever be grateful for her friendship. 2020 brings on new beginnings for Peasant under the auspices of a new owner. However, for us, like church, it’s not the four walls that define a place. Without Frank, Dulcinea, and that staff; it will never be the same again. So as we said goodbye to old and said hello to the new, we knew that we would need to chalk all that’s happened in that special place to nostalgia and move on. Brenda and I looked back as we got into our taxi, smiled a melancholy smile, and figuratively shuttered the gates and prepared ourselves to move into a New Year and brave the future without Peasant. A Happy New Year, and thank you Frank and Dulcy for the embrace and great food these past 20 years. #peasantnyc #whereeverybodyknowsyourname #home #happynewyear #bestofnyc #italianfoodinnyc (at Peasant) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6yFUlhFlyD/?igshid=1pbqebl2dbz1j
