White + Denim : Legends Edition
to summarise what’s happening, the queen was exposed for lobbying the government to hide her private wealth, and shit is sort of starting to hit the fan.
for those of you who aren’t familiar with how uk parliament works, there are several “formalities” that exist within the legislative process which involve the monarchy - for example, every bill must gain royal assent (i.e. must be approved by the queen) to become law. you might be thinking: wait a second, the monarchy is unelected, that doesn’t sound very democratic. and you’re right! this is an argument that’s been ongoing for years, but mostly it’s been ignored because until recently these formalities were seen as harmless (it’s incredibly rare, as in it hasn’t happened in centuries, for the monarch to refuse to pass a bill that’s gone through parliament into law).
this scandal, however, has brought into light the reality of what these formalities actually mean for uk democracy. see, there’s this fun little thing called “Queen’s consent”. essentially, this is where the government asks the queen’s permission for parliament to be able to debate laws that affect her, and it happens before the debate takes place (rather than royal assent, which is the final stage of the legislative process). it was this procedure that the queen used back in the 70s to conceal her private wealth from the public and save her own arse by having government ministers alter a transparency law. no one has ever paid much attention to it, primarily because most people didn’t know it existed until now.
it seems, however, that the queen has repeatedly used Queen’s consent to privately lobby the government. the guardian’s investigation found that the queen used Queen’s consent to vet over 1000 laws, along with evidence of her lobbying for changes to at least four draft laws, though she might have interfered with way more. the laws she’s interfered with range from wealth and taxation laws (shocker), to laws regarding the nhs and even animal welfare. if it’s still not obvious to you why this is a problem, let me explain:
Queen’s consent is democratically dangerous enough as it is, seeing as its existence basically allows the monarchy to alter and even put a stop to legislation that has the potential to limit its power. the way that it’s being used is worse. the sheer breadth of policy that the procedure covers means that the queen, as we’ve discovered, has access to basically all legislation created by parliament, regardless of whether it affects the crown.
tldr: the queen is using parliament as means of maintaining her wealth and power, and Queen’s consent is an inbuilt tool within our democracy that facilitates that. This Is A Problem.
So are y’all killing this old woman if she doesn’t cede her power, dilute her assets, and become a normal citizen or naw?

We will not blame [King George] for the crimes of his ancestors if he relinquishes the royal rights of his ancestors; but as long as he claims their rights, by virtue of descent, then, by virtue of descent, he must shoulder the responsibility for their crimes.

“Yes, being in a female dominated field, I do know what it means to be marginalized. “
oh
my
god
omg
oh my fucking god
The really ugly part is they’ve actually done multiple sociological studies on this, and guess what the result is? Men in female-dominated fields aren’t marginalized at all; they get special treatment and are fast-tracked to the top, getting more credit for their work, faster promotions, and greater pay and benefits than their female colleagues.
Here’s one study. Here’s another. And another.

In my archaeology class of 33 students there were three men.
In the class one year after me (this was in the 90s) there were zero men.
It’s nearly thirty years later and the majority of dig supervisors are still men.
Your average graduating veterinary class is about 80+% female. Male graduates still have average higher starting salaries than female graduates. That translates to higher salaries throughout their career.
Same thing for interpreters, like 90% of graduates are women but people prefer to hire men because the male voice is perceived as more authoritative and trustworthy. Plus most speakers are men, so it’s more pleasing to have male interpreters.
Same for art. My prepa class (first year) was mostly female (5 guys for 38 students), yet the prestigious programs we applied to afterwards had a perfect 50/50 ratio of males and females, except perhaps costume design simply because males wouldn’t apply to that at all. Which doesn’t prevent those who do from thriving in it. As for the other fields - like animation for instance - well, i don’t think i know a single female director. This issue was absolutely not talked about.

I truly hate what this post has become
This is one of those things that make you heavily symphatize with time travelers and there always present question "do I tell them?" And the answer is "Definetely no"
Asking black women if their hair is real is both invasive and racist.
I’m bringing this back as a reminder that no matter how nicely you ask or what your intentions are it’s still racist and invasive.
There’s an exception to this and it only comes in one circumstance-
I have an African co-worker who literally comes in each day with wildly different haircuts. I’m talking from short to long to afro to braids. The whole nine yards. Now I’m not so dense that I couldn’t figure out that she’s wearing wigs but for the first couple times I was so confused.
No. There isn’t an exception. Don’t do it.
My mom is Russian and didn’t really understand that it’s racist and invasive and bad but once I told her “Mom you can’t DO that” she understood and stopped so you don’t have an excuse to keep asking if black people’s hair is real if you’ve seen this post. You know better now.
Y would u ask anyone if their hair is real like thats just textbook rude
weird how things that are usually just rude suddenly become racist when said to anyone other than a white person
It’s almost as if white people say blatantly rude things to people of color that they wouldn’t say to a white person because of racism.
I’m… hesitant to undermine the point of this post, but I’m a person who’s mostly white (quarter Iroquois but I look very white) and I’ve been asked several times if my hair is real (it is). I don’t think it was rude, and they were fairly blunt about it. I think it’s natural human curiosity
You should have been more hesitant. I understand that this is something that people who don’t experience it may struggle to understand, but when we all collectively tell you something is racist, it might behoove you to believe us. 9/10 people ask me if my hair is real before even saying hello to me. It’s the need to authenticate my beauty. Conversely it’s often a need to other black people. We’re considered oddities and our features are unusual. It’s the same line of thinking that had us in zoos but on a smaller scale. Black women collectively are asked this question across the board, across hairstyles, and hairtypes. It happens for a reason. I’m not saying that a white person has never been asked if their hair is real, but it’s happening consistently to us across demographics for a reason. Trying to compare what may happen to you out of general curiosity to something that happens to us regularly and regardless of hairstyle due to racism is a false equivalency and I wish you all wouldn’t do it. Please allow us to be the authorities on our own experiences.
I’ve noticed they never ask me when I’m dressed down. White people only ever ask me if they are in groups, and I am dressed up,and I am either alone or with another black person. It especially happens when a white woman sees me hanging out with a white man.
Always.
Its a way for them to try to make themselves feel less insecure. All their weird little micro aggressions are.
Ultimately I think it stems from a need to authenticate our beauty. White society says we’re not naturally beautiful and therefore before giving us a compliment, white people need to authenticate if we’re actually beautiful or if we bought it. No one ever asked me if my hair was real when my hair was damaged or when it was permed. But when I finally finished transitioning, I couldn’t (and still can’t) leave my house without someone asking if my hair is all mine or if I bought it. Black women with particularly beautiful hair, whether it’s straight, long, or natural, are subjected to these questions because white people find the idea that we could be beautiful to be incredulous. I’ve also noticed that these questions often come when I’m alone or if they’re in a group. People wait until my friends go to the bathroom or walk away to approach me.
Yes! Theyre told theyre whole lives that we’re subhuman and hideous and realizing we’re actually not causes them to have an internal meltdown,i think. They have to justify thinking anything about black woman is beautiful,AT.ALL.
And they can’t fathom beauty without paying heavily for it. They pay for our features. So to them, naturally,NO person may come naturally equipped with beauty. Simply because they cannot.
A word! I don’t know how many times I’ve been asked if someone can touch my hair. Or my favorite, “Where did you find this?” Uhh growing out if my scalp!?!
I’ve always had super long relaxed hair that poofs out. That silky straight lasts me about 3 weeks. My statement since I was 5 or 6 has been, “I am not a dog; do not pet me…” yet mostly white people have this strong urge to run their fingers through my hair. Sir/ma'am I don’t know where your hands have been. You need to learn to admire from a distance. You wouldn’t like it if I walked up and started rubbing on you.
The amount of people who tug(ged) on my hair to determine if it’s real without asking is atrocious. Until recently, thanks covid, this has been a regular frustration when meeting new people. Just say my hair looks nice then mind your own business.
I have tailbone length neon rainbow dreads. They are 9 years old now. No one thinks my hair is real. They go out of their way to ask by saying things like:
how did you dye it?
how long does it take you to do it?
how long will it be when you take it out?
how did you get your hair like that?
how did you get the wool in it?
etc.
And they almost never ask to touch my hair, they just do it. And they always do it when I’m in a position where reacting angrily puts me in a disadvantage.
It happened again last night at the art gallery my husband and I belong to and work at. White girl sees me sitting down making jewelry and makes awkward conversation. She then says to her friend. “ Look, her hair is really cool”, and she had one of my blue dreads in her hand. I was seated with other black people who did nothing. Which is also common. I told her not to touch my hair and she got red faced and apologized repeatedly. However, I already had been violated. She got to pet a negro on a Friday night, so she wasn’t really sorry. She just hoped I wouldn’t beat her ass,
Call me crazy, but I’m not sure you get to be called “more mainstream” if you’re still planning on attending the [checks notes] literal Nazi rally.
Like, it’s not an amateur hobby; you can’t say it doesn’t count because you only march with the white nationalists on weekends to unwind.
some of u didnt have tumblr before the porn ban where u would literally just randomly be scrolling through your dash and happen upon a series of aggressive gay porn gifs because one of ur mutuals happened to be horny that night and it shows
i miss it.
there was a sense of random danger that I loved
The thrill of the scroll.
The secret fear of not being able to open tumblr on your phone in class because god knows someone might look over and see random porn on your dash
what’s wild is I still see just as much porn now. They managed to launch a mass exodus of black tumblr, sex workers, and fat folks with the trash ass algorithm. Regular selfies were getting flagged and profiles were getting taken down for no reason. It was some bullshit considering that the Russian porn bots basically took over from there.
yea no gay male porn blogs still alive and fuckin well I see dick all the time lmfaoo
A lot of gay pornblrs follow me for some reason and there’s still plenty of nudes and gifs out there. I think it was just a massive plot to gentrify the app.
I NEVER THOUGHT OF IT THAT WAY OMFG
They basically forced black people to leave, added a bunch of advertisements, and allowed white porn bots run amuk.
Tumblr is a massive piece of internet real estate. To make it more palatable to investors (white people with money looking to buy) they let black people freely do things that we do while they got to be voyeurs on safari in a behind the scenes view of how black people think, create, and talk. Like gentrifers coming to physical black spaces do
They did this to steal our ideas for ad campaigns, drive up engagements, and provide gateways to media big shots to both exploit and take credit for our labor in magazines, tv shows etc.
Once it looked like yahoo was ready to buy frfr they started making moves that sounded like they were making the space safer and better for everyone. Just like when cross walks, no turn in red signs, bike lanes, grocery stores, and bus stops turn up in black neighborhoods that never had them before.
However those measures were about raising the price of real estate, and signaling to white folks that it’s safe to move in. So just like gentrification off line, the measures meant to help “ glitched”, and well-meaning but definitely self serving white folks got black people kicked out of an online community they established, curated, defined, and impacted the world from for years.
This was wild to read but in all honesty, this makes a lot of sense.
It just never sat right to me that the porn ban always singled out black and brown people. Especially black and brown fat people. Tumblr admins tried to say that it was a miscalculation of how the algorithm perceived nudity.
It made no sense because non white people with clothes on most of their bodies were still getting their content hidden. My selfies got hit a lot and I have zero nudes.
Niggas were getting regular ass pictures with them and their kids flagged. And meanwhile, white porn bots were hacking our profiles, and spamming with white born ads and pics. So while a lot of black tumblr left because of the porn ban, a lot left in frustration of their pictures that weren’t sexual at all being flagged.
How did it recognize our flesh as bad but white flesh as not? how the fuck?
It’s crazy because black girls and boys have been historically perceived by white adults to be older, more mature and less innocent. Which has been problematic to say the least.
say her mother FUCKING name 😤😤😤
Chrissy Teigen really showed her ass too.
Her name isn’t even hard to pronounce everyone is just anti black
I still don’t fw John Legend’s wife for this shit. Ive been side eyeing his ass sense too because there’s no way he doesn’t know she can have this level of hatred for a little black girl
Growing up, whenever I faced racism and open hostility for being black and even talented it was always a girl like crispy teigan. Always. Some nonblack/mixed with white girl that no one invested in because they thought her being mixed WAS her talent. And then they’d take it out on me or other black girls who had to DO more.
Older sisters have both a god and victim complex
lol lol because we better get this shit right or the parents will do the trauma to us.
