it's kind of crazy climate change has occurred at such a remarkable pace that I and everyone else around my age can remember a completely different climate in our childhoods. I truly watched winter gradually disappear in my life.
"You're too young to remember this, but there used to be so many insects outside that you would have to clean them off the windshield after a long car ride" is the kind of sentence that would have been in a cheesy scifi short story earlier in my life, perhaps submitted to a literary magazine and accepted to show support for its environmentalist message - now it's something I've said in earnest.

how has the discourse not yet moved on from the apparent belief that the entirety of transmisogyny can be experienced when one is briefly mistaken for a trans woman on the street
structural oppression is more than that one time someone yelled at you
Are you mistaken for a trans woman at the doctor's office, at the dentist office, on your paper work, in your queer friend group, on the group chat, at the protest rally, at the welfare office, at your workplace, in the courtroom, at the socialist/feminist study group where everyone is encouraged to give their names and pronouns, in the soup kitchen, at the op shop, at the bus stop, in the governmental building, in the police car, at the police station, inside the jail cell, at your criminal hearing, inside the prison's walls, in the rest home, at the public pool, at the nail salon (working or not), at the pharmacy, inside the hospital, at the union meeting, in the dungeon, at the weekly Ttrpg session, in your photos, inside your friends house, inside your partner(s) parent's house, at your family gathering, at your partner(s) family gathering?
Are you mistaken for a trans woman, every where?
Once again reminded that one of the most popular answers from trans women, when posed the question, "What would you do if cis people didn't exist for one day?" was "Go swimming."
In hindsight it's very insulting to be told that flunking out of college due to adhd is actually "quite common"
just like, if there's a history at your institution of disabled kids not being able to make it you realise that's your fault right. like why don't you fucking do something about it. i guess they tried to do something about it with me and it failed so they let me go. crazy. nice work. why should we try to do any better.
only 5% of people with adhd who go to college finish a degree. FUCKING. FIVE!!! PERCENT!!!!!!!!!!!
that should disgust and enrage you.
if any other demographic of students had a 95% failure rate, we would be demanding reform and studies to understand why that’s happening
when i was at my first university, trying to get accommodations for my ADHD, they just kept asking me what accommodations i wanted, and refused to answer when i would ask what was available to me. how the Hell am i supposed to know what i can have? what’s available???? also, i don’t know!!!! i’m an adhd sufferer, not a fucking disability expert for the fucking college, unlike you, DISABILITY EXPERT WHO WORKS FOR THE COLLEGE.
but because the us is OBSESSED with making sure no one gets anything “”for free””, she literally would not tell me what my options were until i broke down in tears and asked her why she was refusing to help me. and then she did a big sigh, like i was fucking up her entire career by *checks notes* asking the disability center in my university to help me, a disabled student
at the second uni i went to, i tried to explain to a dean that i was literally two gen eds that had nothing to do with my degree away from graduating and that i was burnt out and broke and exhausted and suicidal and i just needed to be able to finish my degree without the gen eds. and this. fucking. guy. looked me right in my face and said in the most patronizing tone he could muster “if you can’t handle it, then maybe college just isn’t for you.” keep in mind that up until that semester, i had been an honor student who made Dean’s List every semester and didn’t get below Bs. if it hadn’t been for my mental breakdown, i would have graduated cum laude, maybe even summa cum laude.
but this dean of students looked a disabled person right in the face and said well i guess you just can’t do it, short bus
Pulled these from a couple articles really quick but yeah the statistics are not kind. I remember writing a scathing essay about my issues with ADHD and college as part of an assignment for academic probation. I got back an email calling me entitled and lazy. Somehow, this thread helps me feel a lot better. I still have about a semester of school unfinished that I’m unsure if I’ll finish but… yeah. Makes me feel better to know it’s not just me.
PSA: The Job Accommodation Network maintains a searchable database of accommodation suggestions for a wide variety of disabilities.
The full database can be accessed here and the ADHD page is here. The full database can be filtered by disability, by limitation, by work-related function, by topic, and by accommodation. Many of these accommodations are applicable to academic settings as well as the workplace.
Here are the section headers for ADHD accommodations ideas to give an overview of what the page contains - this post would become Do You Love the Color of the Accommodation if I attempted to list them all here
The ADHD page linked above also includes case examples and strategies for determining what sort of accommodations might be necessary. More broadly, the JAN website as a whole is a treasure trove of information related to the Americans with Disabilities Act and resources for both individuals and employers.
Oh fuck that's really nice, I will read it
Also just heard a podcast interview with a software developer who had good suggestions
Do you feel like ADHD is holding you back? Maybe you don't personally have ADHD but you work with folks who do and you'd like to support the
The head of disability accommodations at my college just kept ablesplaining to me that “accommodations are to level the playing field, not give you an advantage,” and that her job is to “protect the school’s rights” rather than help disabled students. The only accommodations they would offer me were 1. extra time on tests, and 2. an alternative test-taking location - neither of which I needed. I ended up getting (most of) what I actually needed by unofficially asking the individual professors, but it should have been legally protected.
Job Accommodation Network?! Filters to find what might actually help? Shit that organization rocks.
Helping people is certainly @wholesomepostarchive right?! This makes my day.

Dang. I feel better about spending 9 years knocking about college. Admittedly, I emerged with many degrees instead of just one, but the one I needed for later work life was the one that I struggled to get.
At this point I'm pretty sure the only reason I got two master's degrees is that I was early admissions and lived at home for the whole time

Not just the fault of the current admin.
relational trauma has to be healed relationally. the best way to practice having relatively "safe" interactions with ppl is joining a hobby group/club/whatever. I've recently joined like ten Fancy Leather Bag groups on fb out of deep curiosity and interest and the communities ppl will build around literally everything I swear to god. I've seen multiple ladies in these purse groups being like "thank you everyone in this hobby for getting me through my chemotherapy" like ... sometimes we dismiss the middle aged purse lady demographic but you know what they have got is a functional community where they support each other that just happens to be centered around purses. having now read many posts from these groups for several weeks I can see that the object being collected IS important, and is certainly the superifival draw into the space as well as something that provides an immediate shared interest, the actual benefit of localish hobby/collecting spaces is largely community and social support.
those of us who are Very Online Only could stand to learn from this sort of thing I think. it doesn't have to be purses it could be anything. but like. (gestures at the purse ladies who are getting each other through chemotherapy) Shared Interest Facebook Group And/Or Subreddit has it for you. i think.
this is actually my first step of learning emotional regulation. yes yes, restful sleep and physiologically appropriate exercise and getting outside and eating nutritious meals. these are all good. but also MEET. YOUR. SOCIAL. NEEDS. you need the relational foundation to cushion you while you work on these skills! i know it's really scary because we all have relational trauma but that doesn't mean we don't have a need for social connection and support!!!

its really darkly funny that so many public figures keep dying "of cardiac complications after a brief illness" like wow y'all are Never ever going to say the word COVID huh.
They used to say "complications from pneumonia" instead of AIDS.

as a regular donor to Gaza Soup Kitchen I get their email updates, and they said today that while they've continued to be able to expand, donations are slowing down as Gaza gets less coverage. I think being straight is 80% a complex and not an actual sexuality
I'll explain later
Now before I get into this lemme say I'm largely going to be talking about straightness as I've seen it in women.
And as an aside we have seen how 'straight' straight men are...so I don't even need to go there.
But straightness in women is...weird because it comes along with some very odd behaviors that make no sense and seem to appear in relationship with the degree to which a person participates in a patriarchal colonial culture.
I saw a vid the other day of a woman doing that 'what I wore vs what he wore to the event' vids. This type of video features a woman properly dressed up for a 'going out' event like a party or dinner date, and then shows their partner dressed like an overgrown 11 year old boy about to run around in the neighborhood streets.
Stretched out tee, random sneakers, stupid jorts, maybe a baseball cap. Mentally absent look on his face.
The 'joke' is that the woman looks great and put effort into her appearance and the man didn't....Because 'men' never do?
But here's the thing: I'm bi. The men I'm attracted to have never, EVER fucking done this.
I only date bi ppl, so I only date bi men.
Straight women will share about how their husbands are gross, can't clean, don't know where anything is...
.....AND consistently tolerate this bullshit, childish behavior from their 'life partner'.
They will date men who are boring, uninteresting, borderline mean, and then be 'surprised' when they find out he didn't really like them...but it was kind of obvious and what's more, how did they even like him?
DID they like him? Or is straightness 80% comp het?
Because when you exist within a narrative that mandates genders appear a certain way and behave a certain way despite what thousands of years of human behaviour show, then you're really just accepting the NARRATIVE and not an embodied experience of attraction.
I think about the commonly repeated discrepancy between male and female orgasm-- women orgasm with women, men orgasm with men (not like that matters much, statistically), men orgasm with women, but women hardly orgasm at all in straight relationships....
But I am very curious if that holds true in BISEXUAL relationships because again....I have never ever experienced this personally. Not to say that my exception breaks the rule, but ...I'm not straight. And I think that matters.
I saw a white woman get online as maybe some (dubious) sex educator to talk about the vagina and how most of the nerve endings are in the clitoris and labia (true! great!) and so few are in the vaginal canal (ok..!) that penetration 'barely feels like anything'.
Bitch. Pause.
Because coming back to straightness, that'sn some shit white people literally invented, and now skinny white women get to sit up here on podcasts selling their 'happy O' courses talking about how penetration 'isn't enjoyable'....
I think about the straps and dicks I've ridden, and I'm truly confused.
I also think about the layers of sexual repression that women are forced into, levels that are even more maintained depending on how white and straight you continue to be, and how vaginisimus and orgasmic dulling coincide with said repression.
I think about the long history of Black women singing writing and rapping about sex and how much they enjoy it, and having to fight back at people -- largely white!!! -- who have shamed us for doing just that, now saying penetration isn't enjoyable anyway.
Would we be rapping about it this way if that was true? Would y'all be so mad at Meghan if that was true?
The same women who make excuses for being with men that don't like to talk to them, the same women that have to be coached into expressing their desires in the bedroom, the same women whose lives revolve around shitty men, the same women who just accept that your 'husband' will dress himself like a fucking 8 year old who doesn't wanna leave the house....these are not the women, I don't think, who are in any position to tell me jack fucking shit about sexuality.
Straightness in general, but for the sake of this discussion, in women, seems to heavily be a performance of not only tolerating unattractiveness from men but actively pursuing and celebrating it. The woman who comes online to 'joke' about how her husband packed her dog food for lunch, who shows of how poorly he dresses for an event they are both attending as adults, who ignores her desire for a partner with charm, attentiveness and the ability to self express and gladly parades her lack of acquisition of a partner in lieu of having an oversized, boring, smelly child at her side.
I'm sorry, that's not natural.
I think of the woman who went on a vacation to Italy with her husband and showed how, after day 3, he went from dressing like an 'american man' (again the childish/lazy/everywhere-is-walmart-and-also-a-gym look USAmericans are known for) to an 'italian man' i.e. an adult in a crisp linen button down, well-fitting slacks and leather sandals.
And I think, that's the thing; do your husbands look like lazy shit bc they are men?
Or because they are USAmerican-breed 'straight' men? I.e. unfashionable and ungroomed....and you've been trained to like that?
Because it's not at all universal.
idk but as a sidenote I'd like to see more bi women (over 25 pls) talking about their experiences w men bc a lot of the 'this is how things go between men and women' seems to divert from the narrative based on how 'unstraight' the woman (and her attraction model) is.
i feel so defensive and protective of people with ARFID like if i had a disorder that made my brain register 90% of food as poison for no reason and i had a bazillion people on the internet constantly calling me a manchild who needs to just grow up and stop being a picky eater i would start killing people
people with ARFID and people with very few autism safe foods and people with contamination OCD and people in ED recovery and everyone else with a complicated relationship with food that no one takes seriously GET BEHIND ME!!!!!!!
in case you haven't heard, parts of venezuela were recently hit by a series of earthquakes, affecting communities across the country.
as venezuela is my home country, all of this hits especially close to home. thankfully, my family and loved ones are safe since they were in cities not as severely affected. however, many others have not been as fortunate and are now facing the aftermath of these events.
years of political and economic instability have left many communities with limited resources and infrastructure, making it even more difficult to respond to emergencies like this. there are reports of people who remain missing, and many families are still waiting for news about their loved ones. rescue efforts have been made even more difficult by shortages of equipment, ambulances, and other emergency resources needed to respond to a disaster of this scale.
if you're able to, please consider sharing information, supporting verified relief efforts, or simply helping spread awareness about what is happening.
here’s a link where you can donate if you can

“Different from the Others” is considered one of the first sympathetic portrayals of gay men on film. It was nearly destroyed
Richard Oswald’s Different from the Others was a radical silent film produced in 1919 during the Weimar Republic. And it was almost erased from history.
Different from the Others was co-written by Oswald and renowned sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, who also played a role in the film and partially funded it through his Institute for Sexual Science. The film follows a doomed gay relationship between a successful concert violinist and one of his students and explores the impact of homophobia, conversion therapy and the threat of being outed. The film was intended to rally against Paragraph 175 of the German Penal Code, the 1871 law that criminalized homosexuality. Different from the Others is considered one of the first sympathetic portrayals of gay men in cinema, and it was praised by audiences. But conservative Catholic, Protestant and antisemitic groups protested the co-writers’ Jewish identities and the film’s thesis that homophobia, not homosexuality, was a social evil. Different from the Others was censored throughout Germany in 1920 following claims that the film would endanger public safety or turn impressionable young people gay. By October of 1920, only doctors and medical researchers were able to view it via private educational screenings.
