my county got a new tank for the police force.

my county, whose largest school district is wildly poor, got a new tank for the police force.

my high school teachers taught 8 periods and had short lunch breaks.

we have hallways of empty classrooms bc the teachers that were once in them were laid off.

our classrooms are crowded w/ mismatched desks and chairs to squeeze in upwards of 30 kids.

we have no yellow buses for middle schoolers and high schoolers.

teachers fight w/ each other for computer lab and laptop cart reservations.

our textbooks are old and are often missing pages.

we have principles overseeing more than one school at a time.

we have elective teachers running back and forth from school to school, often running late and arriving out of breath.

fieldtrips are almost nonexistent.

but thank fucking god the police department got a fucking tank

i learned about Marion Stokes, a Philadelphia woman who began taping whatever was on television in 1979 and didn’t stop until her death in 2012.. The 71,000 VHS and Betamax tapes she made are the most complete collection preserving this era of TV. They are being digitized by the Internet Archive. (x)

i feel like this is selling her a bit short tbh. It’s not like she was a random woman who decided to tape ‘whatever’ was on television. She was a civil rights activist and archivist, who was extremely concerned about preserving history. She believed that, by taping television, she would be preserving history EXACTLY as it was perceived at the time; she didn’t want the detail in the news to disappear with time. And she was RIGHT.

Like I said, she didn’t just tape ‘whatever’ was on television. It was extremely targeted towards news stations. There were 8 VCRs running at all times in her home. Her life—-and her family’s lives—-were centered around 6 hour blocks, since that was the amount of time that a tape would record for. Her collections were also extremely organized.

I'm sorry, I wish it was just a nightmare too, but unfortunately it isn't and I have this one relatively big platform where I can spread knowledge, share information, raise awareness, make a change and my heart is telling me that I need to use it so I'm sorry for not posting dreams at the moment, but I can't watch people around me suffering and ignore it knowing I could have done something. Even what I am doing right now doesn't feel remotely enough.
