the beauty of the world is that there are people out there having basically indistiguishable gender and sexuality experiences and one has several microlabels and an army of pride flags, one says "idk i guess im nonbinary or something" and the other is comfortably cis with a little flexibility. and all of them are correct because your identity is whatever you make of it.

I have nothing against Hayao Miyazaki as an artist, but I think it's important to note when praising him for his well-written female characters that several of his films with strong female leads are all based on books written by women:

Howl's Moving Castle is based on the novel of the same name written by British novelist Diana Wynne Jones. (Earwig and the Witch is also based on the novel written by Jones)

Kiki's Delivery Service is based on the novel of the same name by Eiko Kadono

Whisper of the Heart and The Cat Returns are based on works written by mangaka Aoi Hiiragi

Arrietty is based on the novel The Borrowers written by English novelist Mary Norton

Miyazaki didn't write or direct When Marnie Was There, but that one is also based on the novel of the same name by British author Joan G. Robinson

Tales From Earthsea is based on the Earthsea novels by American novelist Ursula K. Le Guin

Ocean Waves is based on a work written by Saeko Himuro

From Up On Poppy Hill is based on a manga series written by Tetsuro Sayama (male) and illustrated by Chizuru Takahashi (female).

Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli definitely still deserve praise for producing films that focus on well-written women, especially for works like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, which are original productions, but it's worth pointing out that 1) a lot of Ghibli films with strong female leads are based on works created by women and 2) a lot of Ghibli films in general are based on works created by women.
