The Band’s Visit [X]
Well, I know it’s something different
The Band’s Visit (2017)
AND THE LIVING ROOM BECOMES A GAAAAAAAAAAAAARDEN AND THE TV SET BECOOOOOMES A FOOOOOOOOOOOOUNTAIN AND THE MUSIC FLOOOOOOOOWS IN THE GAAAAAaaaaAAAaaaaAAAARDEEEEEEEEEEEN AND EVERYTHING GROOOOOOOOOOooooows
you are the joy
you are the loneliness
I believe that many of the best Broadway musicals embrace a simplicity that makes it linger long after you leave the theatre
Fun Home is deliberately tailored as a simple story, with some groundbreaking exploration of lesbian identity, but other than that it was an insular family story about the secrets that disturb suburban serenity.
The Band’s Visit is a musical, based on a foreign indie movie, about how the little that happens is magical. It takes narrative risks: basically nothing really threaten anything in the plot and the leading character Tewiq only has one song and it is one of the most powerful moments in the show.
Hadestown takes a tale that is over a thousands years old, pumps it with some politicalization, and examines how we have relationships with tragedies that can still rip our hearts apart.
I realized these shows, all of them Tony winners, have something in common: Their biggest risks were embracing the simple.
the band’s visit is a spectacularly memeable show and I’m frankly appalled I haven’t seen more
My favorite parallels in The Band’s Visit
all i know is i feel something different…
