Lyon, 2017
Third destination of 2017: Lyon
The first weekend of August is a big party/celebration weekend in Iceland. It is called Verslunarmannahelgi or Merchants’ Weekend. There are festivities all over Iceland, and perhaps the biggest is held in Vestmannaeyjar or Westman Islands. I have been three times to that festival and it is hard to put into words how amazingly fun it is.
However, this year I decided to be “good” and travel outside of Iceland instead. I invited my mum to Warsaw, Poland, on standby with me. We were planning on doing a lot of shopping and soaking up the August sun. However, as is common with standby tickets, the flight was full so we decided on Lyon instead.
Now, perhaps it was not the best destination to choose as it was August and most Europeans travel OUT of their respective cities/countries in that time. This is because of the stinking heat! Lyon was no exception to this and upon arrival we understood why - it was 35 degrees celsius and barely any breeze. Nevertheless, it was a really good trip!
Lyon is a beautiful city and I believe in Fall or Spring it is bustling with university students and life. In August it is close to being a ghost town - barely any tourists (which I guess is a good thing) and barely any locals. We did quite a bit of walking around which became exhausting after a while due to the heat.
I recommend, if you are planning on visiting a lot of museums or riding public transportation, to purchase the Lyon City Card. You can buy that online and also at the airport. With that we had included admission to the metro/tram rides around the city, a boat tour to the Confluence center, a tram tour around the old Silk worker quarter, and most museums (we visited the Fine Arts museum). All in all it was a great trip with my mum and I think next time I go it will be in the fall! (I will post pictures in a separate post)

Second destination of 2017: Paris
So, I have been very fortunate this year in the sense that I have traveled quite a bit and I have yet to stop (still have at least two more trips planned).
I work for an airline so I get to fly standby if there is availability. In June, me and a few co-workers decided we did not want to spend the weekend in Iceland so we booked ourselves on standby to Berlin. I have never been to Berlin so I was super excited, but much to our dismay the flight was getting fuller every day so we decided to change our tickets and go to Paris.
I had already been twice before to Paris, but my friends had never been so we were all very excited - plus the weather was much better than back home in Iceland.
I have a love-hate relationship with Paris. As I’ve mentioned, this was my third time there and each trip has been completely different. The first time I was 14 and impressionable - I fell in L.O.V.E. with the city. It’s buildings, the streets, the people, even the food (and I am not a big foodie). The second time it was not as great - I went with my sister for my 23rd birthday which is in November. The weather was rainy and grey, the city smelled and there were questionable people on the streets. We did, however, go to Versailles which was amazing and I recommend everyone to go there!
This time was really fun. I knew my way around, the weather was beautiful sunny and hot. I was able to shop quite a bit and experience the nightlife. All in all a very good trip, and I would definitely consider going for a fourth time.
Here are some shots taken at Paris:

Finally the time came for me to visit Australia again. Six years it’s been since I lived there. Six years!
It’s disheartening to think and realise that time has passed this quickly and it has been so long since I’ve seen my high school friends. Hopefully in the near future I’ll be able to visit more often, and others will visit me as well. I realise being on the other side of the planet is not ideal, and such a long journey can be both expensive and exhausting, but I hope nonetheless. I have got to say, I did not want to go back to Iceland at all. A month in Australia is definitely not enough and I think if it wasn’t for work back home I definitely would have stayed there at least 3 months.
I was able to cram a lot into such a short time and I am so happy I was able to catch up with some amazing people who will always be in my thoughts, despite the long distance and what not. The main reason I went back was because my best friend moved there with her boyfriend and it had already been almost a year since we saw each other. I decided to show up as a surprise to her and it was glorious!
Anyways, here are some shots from my time there. Hopefully it wont be another six years till I go back!
