.nbdmellie:
Mellie stumbled backwards, the heels of her shoes scraping against the sidewalk as she frantically attempted to pull the boy away from the mountain of a man. No matter how much she cried out and tugged on his shirt, he didn’t seem to pay any attention to her words. His error meant that she was soon wincing upon hearing a sickening crunch as the man landed a punch on the boy’s jaw. Mellie let go of him at once, a startled and undignified squeak sounding from her as she immediately clapped her hands over her mouth.
“Oh my days, oh my days,” she muttered to herself, the words muffled by her sweaty palms. She watched with wide and terrified eyes as the boy toppled backwards, arms flailing, only to be hauled forward again by the man yanking him forward by the shirt, having a lot more success than Mellie had when she tried it.
“Let him go!” she insisted. Her words were no longer feeble, even if her voice did shake. Still, they had no effect on the drunkard who had picked the kid up with a strength she was surprised he managed to possess given how much he’d presumably had to drink.
“No!” she yelled when the teenage boy was catapulted across the empty street, his body colliding with the ground and getting ripped up in the process. She could already see his elbows blooming with fresh blood and guilt rose up in her like a tidal wave. This was her fault. She knew she couldn’t rightfully blame herself for the man accosting her, even when she’d told him to leave her alone, but if she hadn’t been so stubborn to disobey Che’s curfew, then maybe the boy wouldn’t have been hurt. He could have potentially landed himself in bother elsewhere, but with a lesser man – and not for the sake of her safety.
Her breath caught in her throat as she watched the boy lie on the ground, looking slumped and defeated. Oh my days, was he even moving?
She heard a grunt and relief coursed through her as the boy picked himself up. She didn’t miss the frustrated look he gave her and, despite everything, she frowned indignantly. She could hardly leave when he was getting beat up in the manner he was, and she had hardly asked him to come to her rescue. Of course, she wouldn’t have managed to escape without him, but that didn’t mean they were in safer waters yet. As long as the hulking man towering above them both stood there, she couldn’t leave the boy to fend for himself – although, if guilt hadn’t factored into her decision, it looked like the most appealing choice.
As soon as she picked up on the boy’s words, she cast him an appalled look, her mouth falling open. Was he really goading him? She had thought that the teenager was stupidly brave before, but now she wondered if he was just plain stupid.
“Are you serious?” she whispered, shaking her head. She had no idea what the desired effect of his words were, but what they earned was a frown from the drunk man who immediately began advancing towards the boy.
She knew she couldn’t fight back. She was far too small and unco-ordinated for that. However, fear had a funny way of turning into bravery when the right amount of adrenaline was muddled into the mix and as soon as she saw the man’s foot dangle off the kerb, she ran forward and kicked his shin with all her might. A gasp left her as her toes protested from inside her polished shoes, but it was nothing compared to the yowl the man let out as he slipped, losing his footing and crashing to the ground.
Mellie gaped for a minute then hurriedly searched for the boy.
“Run!” she commanded him, hastily moving backwards, unable to break into a run until she was sure that he would join her.
Darren didn't think that he was necessarily a stupid person. He done well at school, had good grades, and his gym teacher always applauded his efforts. He wasn't on any sports teams – mostly because he preferred the feeling of leaping through the air while perfecting his pirouettes to kicking a ball around a field – but he still excelled in pretty much every class, and he liked to keep himself active all the same. There were kids in his class like Finn Jordan who were awesome under water, or even that Ronnie kid who he thought might be captain of the school's soccer team – he wasn't sure though, given he'd never been to any of their matches – and there was Lucy, too, who he'd seen around the skate park, as well as at Dance Alley, though he'd never admit it.
In short, he'd come to realise that there were a lot of kids in his class who probably held more athleticism in their pinky than he did in his entire body, and yet despite that factor he still thought he was skilled enough. While it wasn't news to anybody but himself, he knew he could sure as hell dance. And with Alex and Holly's teasing aside, even they knew he was pretty skilled on a board.
And yet, despite his own personal talents, he still seemed to lack a little by way of brawn. His height never seemed to benefit him in situations such as the one he currently found himself in, and he just couldn't for the life of him fathom why, or how, he always seemed to end up on the receiving end of some douchebag's fist. Still, he supposed he'd just have to see it through and hope for the best. He couldn't stand by and let some creep accost some unsuspecting girl, so if he hate to take a few hits here and there then so be it.
What he hadn't expected, however, was look of total bafflement on the girl's face as she stared at him, which is why he was really beginning to question his own intelligence – and sanity, at that. He really couldn't tell if he was the idiot to have stepped in, or if maybe she was just ungrateful, but he was sort of leaning towards the former. While he didn't think he was much of a bad guy, it wouldn't have been the first time a girl had looked at him as though he were lacking in one or two braincells – Holly and Taylor, to name but a few of the aforementioned girls.
Watching as the man jolted towards him, it finally dawned on Darren that maybe mouthing off hadn't been his best idea. He could already feel himself bruising all over after his harsh landing only moments before, and he could practically hear James fretting over his cuts and scrapes. He really didn't want to take another hit, but if it was between him and the girl then it was a no-brainer.
The punch never came, however, as he stared on with wide eyes and a shit-eating grin as the girl swung her foot forward until it collided with the man's shin, knocking him off the curb and into the road. Letting out a loud, triumphant laugh as the man howled in pain, Darren surged forward to congratulate her, only to find her staring on with a look of horror, urging him to run.
He didn't need telling twice, though, and he staggered forward, his eyes still trained on the drunk on the ground, before trailing after her. Breaking into a sprint to catch up with the girl – who had been smart enough to not wait for him – he found himself internally thanking every godforsaken hour of cross country and track that he'd had to endure, it all paying off now as they made their escape.
When the two of them finally found themselves well out of sight of the man from before, having rounded not one, not two, but three corners onto a street he didn't even recognize, Darren came to a halt, smacking his hands to his knees as he doubled over, panting as he tried to regain his breath.
“That... was.... awesome,” he gasped, breathing out ragged breaths as he shot a glance up at the girl.
He knew he shouldn't really be condoning what had just happened, and he wasn't happy about all that had unfolded, but watching the girl stand up for both herself, and Darren, and knock the guy on his ass had been exhilarating, to say the least.
“I mean, you just totally took that asshole down! That was so rad, man, I feel like I could go another ten rounds with him,” he claimed.
Of course, that was a lie. He ached all over and felt all too willing to let death come and snatch him from the Earth if it meant five minutes of peace, but still.
“Man, that guy was a total sleaze, right? He could've, like, hurt you or something!” he told the girl, shaking his head as he finally regained some semblance of even-paced breathing.
He didn't want any kind of thanks from her, of course. It wasn't like he'd just stepped in to be some sort of Knight in shining armour, but still it seemed dumb to not acknowledge the reason he'd managed to land them both in hot water – or, perhaps, hotter water.
“Are you, like, uh... hurt, or anything? I mean, do you need me to call for help or something? I have a phone, if you need...” he trailed off, biting nervously on his lower lip. That had been a mistake, however, and he hissed in pain as he felt the familiar trickle of blood spill down his chin.
Wincing, he shrugged before holding out a hand, waiting for the girl to shake it.
“I'm Darren, by the way...”
.btwbeau:
Darren seemed surprised that she knew his name, to which Beau raised an eyebrow in confusion.
“Yes,” she emphasised. “Doesn’t everyone know your name?”
She realised that may very well be an extremely forward thing to say, but it was an assumption that she thought was completely justified. She hadn’t learned Darren’s name first hand after all, one of the other girls in her class informing her of it and telling Beau that Darren was super popular and have saved the life of none other than President Alderson’s daughter. Beau had been dubious to believe this, especially since the whole escapade had supposedly taken place on top of a twenty-storey building that Darren had miraculously survived being pushed from. But the point was, a lot of people knew Darren, and Beau fought off the embarrassment that came with knowing more about a classmate than she, evidently, was meant to.
The surprise in his tone when he realised she hadn’t shoved her way into any prominent social circles was flattering and it cut yellow across her vision.
“Nope,” she confirmed, tucking her short hair behind her ears. She’d always been self-conscious about the action, fearful her ears were too big to be on display but her tendency to second guess herself had ended abruptly after her break-up with her ex. She didn’t particularly care what people thought about her anymore – even if they did happen to be cute boys with nice smiles that tasted of candyfloss.
“Oh okay, well shoot,” she encouraged him, gesturing with her hand for him to go on before it returned to clutching the strap of her backpack.
As soon as he began stumbling over his words, apologising and condemning himself for potentially offending her, a bright smile lit up Beau’s face. Okay, so she supposed that he was exceptionally cute and knew that this was going to be a story she recounted to Lo later on. Her brother was protective just like any older sibling tended to be, but he wasn’t scarily possessive like others she’d seen and she’d never shied away from talking to him about crushes before.
“Darren, please breathe!” she urged him, boldly moving forward to lay a hand on his shoulder, inhaling exaggeratedly and bobbing her head as a means of telling him to do the same. After exhaling and giving into the warm, giddy feeling that spread through her chest, Beau absently wondered if Darren was offering to show her around just to be kind or if she should throw caution to the wind (as much as Beau was capable of) and maybe get her hopes up.
“Listen, that would be really great if you could show me around. It took me half an hour to get to History the other day and Mr Griffin was nearly at the end of explaining every little detail about a six year war by the time I arrived,” she told him, stepping back and clasping her hands in front of her.
“Can I take you up on your offer?” she smiled.
Twisting his mouth in confusion when Beau questioned whether or not everyone knew who he was, Darren stopped to think. He supposed he had been subject to one or two rumours of late, varying from the retelling, however inaccurate, of his first interaction with Mellie, to people thinking that Ronnie Winters had a big fat crush on him. While he had no clue who had spread the first rumour and twisted it so drastically, he was well aware of Taylor's hand in the latter. Still, had his name really made the rounds so often for Beau to think him popular?
Shaking his head lightly to himself, he pushed forward, rambling and stumbling over his words like an overexcitable child on Christmas morning. As the words spilled from his lips at a speed way past his own control, he wondered if one quick glance at Beau might confirm the worst and that he'd find her staring back at him, an eyebrow arched as she cringed away from the gangly idiot in front of her.
However, instead, what he actually found was Beau looking at him, a wild look in her eyes as she insisted that he breathe. He had just been all too ready to mimic her actions, when he felt the gentle touch of her hand on his shoulder, and a strange swooping sensation surged through his chest, the feeling flowing from his heart all the way into the pit of his stomach. He'd had plenty of crushes before, but not all too often had he felt that, and he breathed out a shaky laugh as he smiled back at Beau, his ears burning all the while.
“Right, breathe. I hear that kinda helps,” he joked, laughing meekly at his own crappy joke.
When Beau finally told him that she would like it if he could help show her around, Darren's eyes lit up – or rather, they would have if he hadn't already felt as though he were on top of the world – and he nodded eagerly as he listened to what she had to say. Letting out a soft laugh when she told him just how late she'd been to Mr Griffin's history class, he whistled dramatically before smiling again to ensure she knew he wasn't poking fun.
“I wouldn't sweat it if I were you. Some of the kids in Mr Griffin's class kinda suck, y'know? I bet he was just grateful you didn't, like, cause a scene,” he reassured her.
When she once again confirmed that she'd like to take him up on his offer, Darren beamed down at her, while using all the strength he had within him to refrain from a fist bump. Awesome. This was gonna be so rad. He couldn't wait to tell James all about it. He could practically picture the look on his best friend's face when he told him that the new, and prettiest girl in school wanted him to help show her around. How lucky was he?
“That's awesome. I'd totally love to! Um, like... I'm just heading to lunch now, too... So, um...” he paused.
While Beau had mentioned not having a lot of friends, and had been happy to accept his helping hand, he didn't want to overstep and make her hang out with him and his friends if she didn't want to.
“Well, like, you totally don't have to, but if you wanted to come sit with us at lunch... Either today, or if you have other plans, like... whenever, you're totally welcome? If you wanted, I mean. I know it’s, like, overwhelming when you don’t know anyone...” He tilted his head ever so slightly, a small, hopeful smile on his lips. “And if not we could, like, talk while we walk to the cafeteria at the least?”
“Or we could go somewhere else!” he blurted out, unable to stop himself. An instant blush coloured his cheeks as he realised just how weird that might sound to Beau.
.btwbeau:
Beau had severely underestimated just how difficult moving to a new school would be. She liked to tell herself that it was worth it now that she saw Lo on a daily basis and, by default, Simon and Kit, but being the ‘new girl’ wasn’t everything that teen movies perked it up to be. At seventeen years old and starting bang in the middle of her junior year, she was swiftly realising that everyone already had predetermined friendship groups that were hard for her to wiggle her way into. Sure, people were friendly, but Beau was still lacking friends.
She clung onto the smiles Lucy Carter gave her when she passed her in the hallways and always jumped eagerly at the chance to return Baby Calhoun’s friendly ‘hello’ when they sat next to each other in class, but Beau wasn’t sure if the girls were just being nice to be nice.
The work was also challenging, as Beau soon found out when she sat down for her English lesson with Miss Parker and realised that she was scarily behind on the syllabus. Her old school hadn’t even touched on Shakespeare yet, so when Miss Parker began chalking words up onto the board, Beau furiously began scribbling her old notes down, copying what Miss Parker said and adding what she knew herself from the various times she’d seen Lo do an amateur production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
She hadn’t even realised that the bell signalling the end of class had rang until Taylor Lynch passed her, tapping lightly on her desk and cheekily informing her that Miss Parker didn’t give extra-credit points for students that worked into their lunch hour. Blushing, Beau watched with a hint of jealousy, as Taylor linked arms with Baby and Lucy and left the classroom.
Shoving her books into her bag and slinging it over her shoulder as she stood, Beau chanced a shy wave towards Miss Parker before stepping out into the hallway. The hubbub of students milling around and the cacophony of sound that reached her ears prompted a myriad of colours to burst in front of her vision. But it was nothing she wasn’t used to and she was about to push on when the violet colour intensified as a voice called her name.
Turning, Beau saw a boy from her class steadily making his way towards her and a sweet, sugary taste filled her mouth. She was reminded of summers at the fairground when she and Lo had been forced to stand in line for the disgusting porta-potties, all so they could wash the sticky remnants of candyfloss from their face. Beau had never met anyone who tasted like candyfloss before, but smiled at the boy nonetheless, already pleased that he seemed to know her name.
“Hello,” she greeted him in return. She waved a hand when he apologised for bugging her, trying not to make it too apparent that she was excited about someone starting up a conversation with her. “Don’t worry about it. Darren, right?”
She knew the boy from a few of her classes, and his friend James’ anecdotes concerning Much Ado About Nothing were the only reason she wasn’t in danger of completely failing her finals. He was pretty cute, which made Beau even more curious about why he was speaking to her.
“Oh, I can talk,” she nodded, a sheepish smile making its way onto her face. “I actually haven’t made that many new friends so far. What did you want to ask me? Homework things?”
Darren's grin grew all the wider the second that Beau greeted him, and he found himself having to chew on his lower lip so as not to look too overenthusiastic. He didn't want her thinking she was a total weirdo or something. The facade slipped away pretty quickly, however, when she made it apparent that she knew his name, and Darren nodded eagerly in response.
“Yeah! Uh, yeah. Darren. You know who I am?” he questioned, raising an eyebrow in response.
It probably made him seem super lame to even ask that, and he realised his error almost instantly. Still, Darren didn't have any false ideals about his status at the school. He knew he was lucky enough to have a lot of friends, and that people were usually pretty content to chat with him. He hoped that had something to do with the fact that people actually thought he was a nice person or something, as he tried his best to get along with just about anyone, but it still made his heart swell with pride to think that people knew of his existence, and actually wanted to stand around and talk to him. It made a stark difference to when he was in middle school, or even the few years prior when Grant Morley had still been roaming these halls and shoving him into lockers – of course, that still happened on occasion, but it was nice to get a break from it.
When Beau informed him that she hadn't made many new friends, a small laugh escaped his lips as he shook his head in confusion. When it became all too evident that she wasn't joking, Darren stared at her, wide eyed with his mouth agape.
“Wait, you're serious? You haven't–” he cut himself off, not wanting to make a complete idiot of himself. His emphasis on the word you was enough to imply that he thought Beau to be a cut above the rest, and he wasn't sure if that was just because he thought she was insanely pretty, or because she actually seemed pretty cool, but either way he found it hard to believe that somebody like Beau couldn't make friends off the bat. Still, he had no idea what it was like being the new kid, so he supposed it wasn't his place to make assumptions.
Shrugging, he moved on, finally catching onto the latter end of her sentence, and realising that even now she didn't think that he was stopping her to actually talk. While it wouldn't be totally out of line to assume he hadn't been paying attention in class, he actually wasn't here to talk to her about homework – especially as he couldn't very well confess that the reason he hadn't taken any notes in the last hour was because he'd been too busy daydreaming about how beautiful she was.
“No, no. Nothing like that, actually,” he told her, waving a dismissive hand in response to her homework comment. “I mean, I guess it's school related? But it's, like, totally not about homework.”
Pondering over how to address what it was he even wanted to say – how exactly do most people tell a cute girl that they wanna be their friend and talk some more? – he reminded himself of her previous comment about not making many friends.
“Um, I guess... This might sound, like, sorta lame or something, I dunno... But I guess, I mean... I know you're new and everything? And I get that it's, like, probably crazy hard finding your way around a new school and getting to grips with everything in a new environment, and stuff,” he flustered, stumbling over his words as he tried to get it all out without Beau thinking he was a complete buffoon. “And, I guess 'cause you just said you, like, haven't made a lotta friends... Which– oh my God, I'm not, like, rubbing it in, or anything, I just...”
Stopping to take a deep breath, Darren brought two hands up to bury his face in his palms, embarrassed at his own inability to have even a simple conversation with a pretty girl.
“Sorry, crap... Uh, I was just sorta wondering, maybe if you needed someone to, like... Show you around, and stuff? Y'know, I guess you probably know where your classes are by now, but... If you wanted help with anything?” he posted the question awkwardly, topping it off with a gentle shrug in her direction, before allowing his gaze to drop to his feet as a soft blush crept back onto his cheeks.
