أَراكَ عَصِيَّ الدَمعِ شيمَتُكَ الصَبرُ أَما لِلهَوى نَهيٌ عَلَيكَ وَلا أَمرُ
I see that you're hard of tear, known for patience
Doesn't love have over you any power nor order?
بَلى أَنا مُشتاقٌ وَعِندِيَ لَوعَةٌ وَلَكِنَّ مِثلي لايُذاعُ لَهُ سِرُّ
Well yes, I do yearn and I have a pain
But for the likes of me, no secret is revealed
إِذا اللَيلُ أَضواني بَسَطتُ يَدَ الهَوى وَأَذلَلتُ دَمعاً مِن خَلائِقِهِ الكِبرُ
If the night shines its light on me, I'd stretch out the hand of love
And humiliate a tear known for its arrogance
تَكادُ تُضيءُ النارُ بَينَ جَوانِحي إِذا هِيَ أَذكَتها الصَبابَةُ وَالفِكرُ
Between my sides, almost ablaze
Would desire and reminiscence make it afire
مُعَلِّلَتي بِالوَصلِ وَالمَوتُ دونَهُ إِذا مِتَّ ظَمآناً فَلا نَزَلَ القَطرُ
My reason is reuniting or perishing
If you die of thirst, no rain would fall
حَفِظتُ وَضَيَّعتِ المَوَدَّةَ بَينَنا وَأَحسَنَ مِن بَعضِ الوَفاءِ لَكِ العُذرُ
I preserved and you wasted the affection between us
And out of loyalty I'd think better and find you an excuse
وَما هَذِهِ الأَيّامُ إِلّا صَحائِفٌ لِأَحرُفِها مِن كَفِّ كاتِبِها بَشرُ
And these days are mere but sheets
Of letters from a palm of its human writer
بِنَفسي مِنَ الغادينَ في الحَيِّ غادَةً هَوايَ لَها ذَنبٌ وَبَهجَتُها عُذرُ
Myself one of the goers in the street
My love for her a sin and her joy an excuse
تَروغُ إِلى الواشينَ فِيَّ وَإِنَّ لي لَأُذناً بِها عَن كُلِّ واشِيَةٍ وَقرُ
You turn to my slanderers, But I
Have an ear that for slander, is deaf
بَدَوتُ وَأَهلي حاضِرونَ لِأَنَّني أَرى أَنَّ داراً لَستِ مِن أَهلِها قَفرُ
I felt alone, while my own are around
For a house that you do not live in is a desert
وَحارَبتُ قَومي في هَواكِ وَإِنَّهُم وَإِيّايَ لَولا حُبَّكِ الماءُ وَالخَمرُ
And I fought my people for your love, and they
And me are, were it not for your love, as water and wine
فَإِن يَكُ ماقالَ الوُشاةُ وَلَم يَكُن فَقَد يَهدِمُ الإيمانُ ماشَيَّدَ الكُفرُ
If what the slanderer said and it was not,
Faith destroys what unbelief has built
