i really thought the point of "being lgbt+ doesn't absolve you of racism as a white person" was that white people arent absolved of racism by being marginalized but it really seems like people think other marginalizations make it okay. no being disabled doesn't do it. no being poor doesnt do it. we need to fight against racism actively no matter what.

this take is so common it’s starting to bother me. grace is earth’s leading expert on astrophage and one of the top scientists in his field. erid is largely less scientifically advanced than us. they don’t have computers. they just found out about stars because they don’t perceive light. they don’t have anywhere close to our hand eye coordination skills. meanwhile they’re skilled at many things we aren’t (memory, math, multitasking, making stuff). humans and eridians aren’t smarter or dumber than each other, they are different species who are good at different things! why would i judge them both by the same metric.

(as for emotional capacity & demeanor i have no idea how grace is like a dog to eridians?? is there anything to suggest that in the book or movie)

and the way grace overcomes his cowardice is so good because it still doesn’t come easily to him.

he sits and bawls thinking about the choice he has to make to go home or save rocky. i’ve seen people refer to this as him crying for rocky specifically, and in part, yeah, but he’s crying because he wants to survive and go home to statues and parades and to yell at stratt, and now that's not a simple choice. he is wrestling with the temptation to do it anyway and leave rocky, but he keeps involuntarily thinking about his friend and his ‘dumb carapace' and the whole planet of eridians who need him and it's dawning on him that he is going to choose to die.

when grace sees the blip-A again there's a moment after he celebrates where he suddenly feels heavy because he realizes if he hadn't been able to locate rocky, he would have gone home and survived after all. and he thinks, wow, i can't believe i tried so hard to find him.

this is him overcoming the weakest part of himself to make a choice he wouldn’t make before. a choice he’s not even being asked to make this time! and he made the brave choice while sobbing, wishing he could save himself too. it's a compelling contrast to a lot of stoic, noble, dignified depictions of self-sacrifice in fiction. it’s so good
