Reduplication - Chapter 1

“…And would you like soy milk in your latte?"

"No, thanks, I’ll have milk milk.” Reduplication. It can look so strange in some contexts but it sounds so normal when you’re actually saying it out loud, so normal that you don’t even think of how strange it may sound to the person you’re talking to. This is one of those moment where I only realise how stupid I potentially sounded to the barista behind the counter, but usually that wouldn’t phase me; wouldn’t bother me. However, this time was different. It was different whereby the certain individual barista who happened to serve me today was incredibly attractive with melted chocolate eyes and matching hair, much darker than their skin but presumably in the same, or at least similar, colour scale. Where I would usually just smile and pay for my choice of caffeine to get me through the day, I find myself blushing for the first time in what feels like forever, forgetting to smile and just handing over the amount I owed for the latte I had ordered from this beautiful creature. I shuffle, more awkwardly than I initially planned, over to the end of the counter where I wait for my drink. I earn a few second glances from a few people in the quaint little coffee store, and I assume it’s something to to with my uniform and my location. It’s no mystery to anyone who sees me what my profession is, you’d have to be completely oblivious or completely stupid. There is no in between.

My mum pulled to a stop in the front of the hospital.

“Do I really have to go to a nut house, mum?” I whined looking at the white building in front of me.

“It’s not a nut house, Philip. It’s a mental hospital to help you. And you have to go because I don’t want to lose my baby.” She replied, fresh tears pricking her eyes.

“You’re not going to lose me mum. So, I don’t like the way I look. So I get sick a lot—”

“You make yourself sick, honey. Bulimia is a mental disorder and you’re going here to get help with it, okay? You’ll meet kids going through the same things and you can talk with them.” She consoled.

“I still don’t want to go.” I pouted crossing my arms.

“Well, the therapist recommended it and I’m not going to lose my only son. Now come on, grab your things. I’ll help you get settled in.”
