Don't! Bite Your Tongue - A Hollanov Writing Event
ABOUT | As of today, 9th of March, the Shane Hollander/Ilya Rozanov tag on Ao3 contains 21,231 works (wow!) Out of these 21,231 works only 759 are NOT in English. That's a bit less than 3.6%. 3.6% to represent the remaining 50 languages that are available in the Archive's drop-down language menu. This is a truly depressing statistic, especially for a tag where both of the people involved are bilingual. And I guess calling them just bilingual isn't fair, because Ilya isn't just bilingual, his native language is NOT English. Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming any of the writers on the tag. The fact that there are so many works in such a small period of time is both remarkable and deeply inspiring. But the fact remains; people simply do not write in their native languages.
I am sure that there are many statistics about this somewhere out there—articles, essays, books dedicated to the English linguistic neo-imperialism and its consequences. (In the course of this event I might even make a bibliography on stuff like that.) Hell, it even makes me feel at least a bit hypocritical organizing this and writing all of my posts in English. Alas, it is how the world works right now and it's true that it is useful. Still, it doesn't make it any less sad to see thousands of new writers being more or less forced to write in another language for their stories to be heard.
And so, I have decided to organize this small event. My aim is to promote writing in one's own native language and create a space where we can all move away from the English-centric world, even for a tiny bit. The title is a play on the expression "bite your tongue", which means "to stop yourself from saying something that you would really like to say". I found it very fitting considering that a lot of us are led to "bite our tongues" and adapt to a completely different language system and writing culture.
I will soon upload a schedule and some guidelines on how I imagine this event to go. But don't worry, it is meant to be something very chill. There will not be many restrictions or requirements.
So yeah, brainstorm, write, translate, practice, talk to each other! Like and reblog this post, share your thoughts.
Happy writing!
