To compete with the massively successful 1988 Brisbane World Expo, the adjoining theme park (uncreatively named "World Expo Park") featured a troupe of Australian animal mascots, portrayed by animal performers. While the cute koala couple dominated merch and signage, the platypus character "Shuttle" was a crowd favorite and drew gaggles of starry eyed children and enthusiastic young ladies alike.

The "Aussie Mates" of 1988 have unfortunately all passed on, but their memories are preserved by the park's many passionate fans on Facebook, with the largest page run by an ex employee (who is famously choosy about which photos of Shuttle he is willing to share)
