in my mind if dragons were real then western and eastern dragons would be only distantly related species filling the same ecological niche across different continents. but due to visual similarities got called the same thing in English. and it would be one of those things that you hear on trivia game shows and go "oh that's neat" about and then move on with your day, like how tanuki get lumped in with racoons even tho racoons are musteloids and tanuki are canids. do you see my vision.

A thriving ecosystem also exists around the dragon, including livestock that have escaped being eaten for generations and wild animals that have evolved to feed off the dragon. Different dragons may have their own bespoke ecosystems.

Rather then defeating the dragon in battle, you must defeat them in a philosophical debate regarding your moral right to slay dragons.

Instead of cursing her to an eternal sleep or death, Maleficent declares that the princess will grow up to betray the kingdom and serve her instead. So the king sends Aurora away, but one day the young adventurous girl strays a bit too far and right into her territory.

And of course Maleficent is like "hey kid do you wanna learn some totally normal magic that is not dark or evil at all"
