WHAT IS THE CHARGE? EATING A PENGUIN? A SUCCULENT ADÉLIE PENGUIN?
One of my problems with Oklahoma (1955) is that Will gets with Ado Annie instead of me.
Okay, but seriously, it's a great musical and I might possibly have a crush on Will. Curly is also hot, but it's Gordon McRae and he's just an incredibly attractive man.
The movie does leave out some important parts, and usually I'd recommend the 1999 revival, but that's not as fitting for this blog. (Though the 1999 revival does also have a hot Curly. It's Hugh Jackman.)
If you do watch it PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE promise me you're not going to say Curly is the real bad guy and Judd did nothing wrong 😭 this seems to be more common with people who watched the 2019 revival, but I do think some people come away from the movie thinking that. Yes, Curly does bad things but if Judd was real he'd be an incel*
(*you'll see what I mean if when you watch it. You will watch Oklahoma! I'm using my hypnosis on you 😈)
i've actually never seen Oklahoma! what about you guys?

in 2024 I felt like I was ready to articulate exactly what troubled me about the way that Neil Gaiman cultivated an image and a particular relationship with his fandom and then. well. and the thing is that it would still have troubled me if he hadn’t turned out to be an evil rapist and was just kind of a self-obsessed guy with poor boundaries, but now it’s impossible to talk about that lol.
I am interested in what you have to say. I am interested in your perspective on this matter of reputation, fandom, and social/parasocial relationships.
I have tried but honestly I can’t really rewind my own brain to 2024 before the scandals broke and when it was all fresh in my mind due to the excitement around the Good Omens show. Ultimately it came down to having bad boundaries with his own fandom… the “rockstar” thing was very purposefully cultivated, and he got way too comfortable publicly encouraging a really extreme degree of hero worship in a way that felt deeply irresponsible from a public figure.
Like… his tumblr was quite active, his askbox was open, and he no doubt received dozens to thousands of asks per day. The ones he chose to publish were frequently over-the-top “you’re literally the reason I’m still breathing” “your books are so important to me I’m going to name my ovaries after you” type shit that’s like… personally I think you have to be a little bit of a creep not to find kind of uncomfortable. He would never attempt to graciously de-escalate or redirect that sort of interaction and really normalized it as the way to speak to and think about him while also courting the down-to-Earth and accessible Tumblr uncle thing. Just. Like. He made himself irresistible to a kind of psychologically vulnerable young queer woman hungry for validation in a way I had thought was shameless and irresponsible and retroactively think was very calculated.
yeah what always got me uncomfortable is that... like, and obviously my experience with this is the lowest stakes possible version, lol, but when you have any kind of somewhat visible internet presence and you Make Things that people see & consume, you'll get a variety of messages that range from "I hate your fucking guts in a weirdly personal way" to like, "I am/was really going through it and seeing you/your words really got me through a super dark time" with a LOT of stuff in the middle. and the latter type of posts often come with shades of "this person is really really vulnerable and is pedestalizing you and whatever you say back is going to have a really really outsized impact on them" and those are messages that I get sometimes, and I've gotten to the point where I'm always REALLY really conscious of the differential that's present there and always always try to respond in ways that emphasize my status as just a person on the same level of personhood as the asker, while at the same time not acting completely like A Peer, because how the person feels about me prevents us from really being equals in terms of the impact I can have on them vs the impact they can have on me. like, there simply is a level of emotional distance it is appriate to maintain when people latch onto you/your work to that degree.
so I would see the asks he chose to publish, and how he chose to respond to them, and my primary thought was always "wow I would never select those messages to publish and if I did I would answer them very differently" because he kind of did the opposite of the thing I try to do; he would act like he was A Peer (in other words, not acknowledging any unevenness between him & a fan) while at the same time not at all discouraging the pedestalizing. like "yes I'm a god, but I'm a god you can talk to!" as opposed to "wow hey, you can talk to me and I'm really glad my work had a positive influence on your life, but I'm not a god, I'm a guy." which I think at best shows someone is really clueless about power dynamics & bad boundaries and self aggrandizing behavior. and I guess we found out what it shows at worst.
blech.
#mmmmhmm.#a tricky line to articulate is that - absolutely the scope and magnitude of what came out against him was shocking#and far beyond what I had expected. I don't make any claims to having 'known all along' or anything of the sort#But also on the face of it. I was not surprised that he was accused of sexual assault.#Because the way he was acting with fans demonstrated a willingness to take advantage of people's admiration to feed his own ego.#which suggests a willingness to take advantage in other ways is at least a potential issue.#and there is something in the shape of hiding 'calculated intent to exploit' under a guise of 'willing to take advantage of fans'#under a guise of 'magnanimously accepting praise and feeding people's fan/idol complex'#under a guise of 'just building an approachable internet personality'#I also feel like. In relation to the whole thing with the sanctification of terry pratchett#I really felt like a lot of gaiman's posturing about the show was pretty transparently an attempt to feed off of that#energy of idolization. In a way that felt pretty shitty to do to the memory of a friend. (via screambirdscreaming)
I know people like to clown on aspects of classic Disney films that don't feel grounded in reality. But I've worked both front and back of house in restaurants of varying quality. And if I found out our line cook or something served a full plate of spaghetti to two dogs in an alley, I would consider that like. Like not good. But possible.
I've said it before, I will say it again. Tramp was shown latter in the movie to be a ratter. It is not at all farfetched to think that he might have once hunted a bunch of rats that threatened the restaurant and so the head chef considers him a valuable ex-employee and friend.
It's actually super unethical to keep a peeve as a pet
whenever someone tries to make you feel bad about being fat, acting like being fat is some unnatural modern corruption of our Naturally Thin Ideal Human State, just remember your neolithic ancestor çatalhöyük skeleton 2058, a possibly disabled "obese" woman who carried heavy loads and stayed active till she died OVER FIFTY!!!! which was a good long life for the time!
would skeleton 2058 want you to waste your life and ruin your health chasing thinness??? NO!!!!!!!!!! she wants you vaccinated and active and eating a glorious amount of delicious food in your home with your loved ones. and also collecting auroch skulls
Source! good for her omg
[ID: text: "In conclusion, 2058 was a woman over fifty, obese, who had been in the habit of carrying heavy loads slung over her shoulder. She had sustained an injury to her right foot at some time and possibly limped slightly. This disuse may have brought on the osteoporosis of the calcaneus. The degenerative changes in the neck vertebrae may be the result of neck strain during carrying; otherwise there are virtually no degenerative changes to any of the joints and she remained mobile to the end of her days." /end ID]
@holyfootstool interesting that you mention that: 2058 was actually found in a grave with a perceived-male skeleton (2056), who was also an older adult! 2056 also did a lot of physical work in his life. he had strong legs, had a lifelong habit of kneeling while leaning on his left foot, likely dealt with chronic neck pain (altho his back was in surprisingly good shape), and his right hand was injured at some point.
its totally unknown what relationship they may have had though. she was buried first, likely in a basket, and some time later the grave was re-opened and he was placed on top of her and displaced her body slightly (this wasnt uncommon for çatalhöyük, where reopening graves and multi-body burials were part of the natural flow of how death was engaged with). there's probably no way of knowing who they may have been to each other, but they were buried only a few days apart.
there remains every possibility she was having kinky sex. with whom? only the wheat and bones and stars know...
me: to really understand Frankenstein, we have to take into account that Mary Shelley was surrounded by creative men who really didn’t take her seriously, so in addition to sci-fi horror, it can also be read as an exploration of female creative frustration and-
The burglar that broke into my house: bodily autonomy?
me: exactly. Now,
Woman in front of me in line at the caffe nero changed my life yesterday when she ordered a prosciutto sandwich but pronounced "prosciutto" like it rhymed with mosquito. "Pruh-squee-toe."
I heard this person say "uhhhh yeah can I get a prosquito sandwich please?" and I knew I'd never be the same. Prosquito. Prosquito. Its everything to me. I haven't been able to stop saying that lmfao. This is my spinch. This is my bagel and creem cheems. This is my ranibow sprimkle.
friends and family are already tired of me going crazy over prosquito but its so special to me
is that a gun to the back of my head or are you just happy to see the back of my head?
this was written 100 years ago but it reads like a post i would make on my tumblr blog in 2026
