the man who sold the world // a deal with the devil
Now that I'm safely past (I hope) my two consecutive Years of Hell, I can return to the project that I was slowly working on before the shit hit the fan, i.e. archiving Garak and Bashir fanfiction from the late 90s/early 00s by the incredible writer Mevennen (I'm archiving with their permission). Seriously, you should read their stuff. May I recommend for starters:
Nom de Plume: Garak has a lot of spare time on his hands. How should he fill it? By writing a novel, of course.
Physician, Heal Thyself: What Garak was up to during 'Doctor Bashir, I Presume' (seriously, this is so good I'm always amazed not to see it on screen).
A Dance to the Music of Time: On Bajor, during the Occupation, Elim Garak meets a traveller in time and the love of his life. (Warnings for drug use, addiction, rape/non-con elements.)
Quick guide for my non-Trek friends, because I suspect I will be sporadically thirstposting lizard men (again):
Marc = scrimbly scrungly long man. attractive. Intriguing backstory. I dig his vaguely tormented groove etc
Dukat = trashboy dumpster toilet face deserves to eat shit every day for ever. my thirst is self-loathing I assure you
Casey = pretty rad dilfy guy who seems to be living his best chill life
Damar = miserable depressed ex-jock with a round ass and a drinking problem
Andy = 10/10 beautiful angel too good for this earth
Garak = god's gayest and most deceitful soldier. juicy fake tiddies. also 10/10
Hi everybody, I hope you’ve missed my doodles! Haven’t been posting anything for two weeks ‘cos I work now (like an Adult!!) and had no time lately. Hope I’ll have time and energy to draw at least a couple somethings a week from now on
I was gonna write a short Siskoshir thing to clear my head before wrapping up the Julian/Martok+Garashir prison fic.
I'm at 1200 words. I'm not done yet. Why am I like this?
I should practice wrtiting shorter stories. I intended for this to be a shorter story. I failed. Whoops.
(The prison fic I should be wrapping up, btw https://archiveofourown.org/works/77033111/chapters/201631291)
Okay, so it landed at about 19.000 words. Whoops.
It's dark in another way than usual, but the ending is happy and I am pleased with the story.

julian has a couple plans for this kind of situation, captain
These two are NOT beating the 'fucking in the holosuite allegations, because WHAT was that interaction?
past prologue doodle because they make me insane (text taken from my favourite moments of the infamous @wellsbering video)
Ds9 Garak b plot whereby, due to Science Fiction Shenanigans™, he gains the ability to read minds and has his entire worldview upended by actual evidence of how batshit his paranoia actually is. Queue classic Garak breakdown.
This can only be the B plot though. The A plot is something deeply unserious like Jake's teen dating difficulties as the son of the local's Messiah.
The two intersect whenever garak, holding his head and trying to scurry somewhere quiet stops and turns to Jake on the promenade as he tries to get the attention of a girl on a different level who has suddenly started talking to him earlier and says “I wouldnt bother with her, she’s only interested in the approval of her parents.” Before realizing what he just said and to who, so he has to run off again before the little reporter can ask any dreaded questions. Leaving Jake thoroughly confused but suspicions confirmed
in 4x24 "Body Parts" they. they never showed quark telling garak that he doesnt need to kill him anymore, they really missed out on a great opportunity for a joke like this:
A Garak who hasn't felt sexual attraction or drive for years. It's a bodily process. Flirting and sex are a means to an end. A thing that is done because he is what he is. Whether he wants to or not, isn't even part of the equation - so much so that he cannot even tell if he does or not. He needs his marks' engagement. He needs them on the back foot. He needs to be in control, and being the aggressor in a sexual circumstance will often do that. Even if they are not interested, the discomfort his demeanor creates gives him the advantage. Like a magic show: he distracts with flashy, bright sexuality to hide the subterfuge beneath.
But that doesn't mean his heart is unmoving. He feels it sometimes. A little lurch or flip when Bashir smiles at him fondly. When he faces down his lies, or thinly alluded to violence or guilt, with a soft gentle kindness. A demeanor that only ever says: you are safe with me, I will never judge you for the things you did or the things you need to do to help your people. It drives him forward. It grips him like he is an insect and manipulates him without even trying. He craves Bashir without even noticing and lies to himself. He's never above lying to himself. He needs a trusted station contact. He needs to nuture this connection. However he feels about it, however he craves it, is inconsequential. To feel something at all, is so novel that he doesn't know what to do with it. So he plows ahead on well worn tracks.
Then, as Tain's influence fades and Bashir's steadily grows, something in him is lurching back like into frame. A soft, unsteady thing - both old and young, something that never truly learned to walk before it began being puppeted. Before he knows it, he's dreaming of golden skin and human whimpers and first name he's dared not even say in his mind.
It rises and falls.
A steady hum in his mind.
Love as the lust that he thought was beyond him.
He did not know what it was to want until he was and, suddenly, he is drowning in it. He cannot act on this. He doesn't know the script. There is too much at stake. Too much at stake to Him. Because he is no longer Tain's sharpened blade now. No longer the "Sons of Tain". All those masks have fallen away.
He is Elim.
Elim, who was buried so long ago.
Who is Elim? He doesn't know this person. He doesn't know himself. He marches onwards still. Cracking codes. Advising on Cardassian weapon design. Troop movements. Keeps moving because it is all he know how to do. He is a survivor.
He has no king now. So now, Cardassian must have no king too.
It's time to pull the yolk from their shoulders. It's time to emerge, blinking, into the light of the sun and see himself. It's time to grow up. It's time to want.
He isn't ready.
Re: this post, I was totally serious.
Give me your best Garak&Kira fics, I need them. Beta canon didn't feed me well enough.
Liberation Day
Cardassia Prime, 2395
It is no hardship for Kira to make the journey to participate in this ceremony, and her presence here – standing beside Lang – reinforces the joint message of their governments that whatever their histories, the continuing tale of Cardassia and Bajor is one of peace and reconciliation. And, twenty years on, at the back of her mind, she wonders how much time there is left.
The man in the seat to her right shifts uneasily. He moves the bouquet of perek that he’s holding from one arm to the other and back again. He doesn’t like to make public appearances; this is the only such occasion that he attends. And why shouldn’t he, she thinks. He earned this one, that’s for sure.
She looks down at the decoration on her chest. Black and gold stripes on the ribbon. The medal part itself is bronze, in the shape of the symbol of the Union, inlaid with the same shape in black enamel. Hundreds of these were given out to those who took part in the resistance, but she is – she thinks – the only Bajoran to be honoured this way. The only Bajoran to be honoured by the Cardassian Union. Hers, too, is different from the rest. In the centre, there is a little gold trefoil. There are only two others like this. One is pinned to the coat of the man sitting next to her. The other is buried with the man in front of whose statue they now sit.
She watches as Lang – tall, straight-backed and dignified – stands and walks forward. When she reaches Damar’s statue, she bows her head for a moment, then bends to place the perek flowers at the base of the plinth. And then it’s Kira’s turn to stand and walk forwards, and place her hasva there.
Garak is next – but he doesn’t bend. He places one hand against the stone of the plinth, and he lowers himself to one knee. He places the perek on the ground, and then remains there for a while, his head bowed, his hand covering his face. When he makes to stand again, she’s momentarily gripped by terror, convinced he’s not going to make it. But he does; more slowly than he might have in the past, but, still, back on his feet, again. His face, returning, is heavy with grief. When he sits, she reaches out to clasp his hand.
---
An hour later, she is walking with him along a promenade that overlooks an orange beach. Below, there are families out for the day, doing whatever it is that families do when they go out for the day. In her hand, she holds a single hasva flower; he has matching perek. This is Cardassia, after all, where you might spend the morning honouring a hero, and the afternoon mourning the child he murdered.
They come to some stone steps, and take them slowly down onto the sand. They walk out toward the sea. The day is very still. She’s been wondering why he chose to come here, of all places, and when they reach the water’s edge, he says, “I brought her here once, you know. In the holosuite, I mean. We skimmed stones and ate fresh litik from their shells. I tried to choose ordinary things for us to do. Things she would have done, if she’d been…”
Ordinary.
“I did the same,” she tells him. Not that she had much in the way of everyday childhood memories, but she’d tried to think of things that they might do together that they would both enjoy.
“And none of it true,” he says. “Ridiculous, really.”
“I think we did our best,” she said. “I think we did what we could, with what we had.”
He throws the perek out onto the water. She sends the hasva to join it. They stand side by side and watch as the waves pick them up and carry them, wherever they may go.
“I wonder, I often wonder…” he says. “Do you think we might have done more?”
She’s thought that too, and often, over the years. Could she have prevented her coming back from Bajor? Could she have kept a closer watch when she returned? Could they – both of them – have spent less time circling each other mistrustfully, and more talking – just talking – about what it was she really needed from them? And then she tries to remember not to torment herself this way. They did their best, with what they had; before she was murdered by a man whose moral awakening came just a little too late.
She remembers him, down in the cellar, accounting for what he’d done. She remembers Garak, getting up and walking away, standing with his back to them, his hand against the wall, fingers tapping as the other man spoke. She remembers her own hot rage, and how very still she’d held herself, as she listened. Damar had never known, she thought, how close he’d come. How very, very close…
They turn to leave. She takes his arm as they walk back up the steps.
“Do you think,” he says, “that we ever stood a chance of saving her?”
And she remembers what else Damar told them – that when he’d shot her, she’d been running away. Running away from her father. Running towards freedom.
“You know,” she says, “I think we did.”

yayy kiradax doodle :3
listen listen listen cardassian cultural breeding kink + the timeline wherein it's julian carrying the o'brien baby instead of kira
no no im not going back in the cage behold my vision!!
garak so horny and jealous and horny that he’s going to fuck bashir over the replimat tables in full view of the station over their next lunch because if bashir is swollen with anyone’s baby it should be his.
bashir is cool with this. odo and sisko and the unprepared eyes of the other diners are less so.
God, Garak and Bashir still havent hooked up yet and everyone is hopelessly pining. O'Brien getting just as uncomfortably horny about massaging Bashir and keiko trying to set them up. Garak getting agressive and terratorial and threatening miles. Miles refusing to understand.
Garak starting to pettily sabotage minor systems to piss miles off :) this culminates in them getting into a fist fight and getting uncomfortably hard about it.
when ao3 was down i started to go through my own fanfiction drafts and tell me why i have a half assed rewrite of garak and bashir meeting in the style of disco elysium (don’t come at me for the skills mechanics it’s been so long since i played this game)
Cardassian seduction techniques 🦎
Holy shit, new Cardassian redesign just dropped
