I have realized I can just up and ask you things now and may perhaps use this power for evil. I quite liked the worldbuilding you and the other DS9 Reboot authors did for the Tzenkethi, and I was reading along your recent works and got clotheslined by the factoid that Mathenites apparently make really good soup, and you can tell if a Cardassian has been in exile in Mathenite space because they suddenly turn up with all these excellent soup recipes. I suddenly really, really care about the Mathenites. This little descriptor made them wholly and entirely real for me at like warp eleven. I'm wondering if you have any other Mathenite headcanons puttering around?

Aha, yes, you've got me where you want me. I don't have much in the way of headcanons about the Mathenites, to be honest. There's just that one throwaway line in "Second Skin" about their government giving sanctuary to Tekeny Ghemor, so I thought, well, let's run with that and assume that other people find sanctuary there. I think the guys from the government-in-exile are there, in Hollow Men?

I think I decided their culture must be quite welcoming and hospitable, and perhaps that (amongst other things I haven't quite worked out) is why they don't mind a bunch of Cardassian emigres settling on them. Maybe they've got beef with Central Command and like pissing them off, particularly now the Cardassians are not really in the business of invading anyone any longer. Maybe they like dissidents as a matter of principle. Maybe they're just good people.

It's warm enough, but I think damper, and maybe when winter hits all these Cardassians start getting really miserable, and the guy who runs a café where a bunch of them hang out thinks, "I know what'll cheer them up - soup." It's great soup, like a really good nourishing soup, and the Cardassians all love it, and so people keep making them soup: "Oh, we've got some Cardassians coming over, I heard those guys are crazy for soup..." And that's pretty much all the emigres talk about when they come home and you ask them about their time amongst the Mathenites: "Those guys make amazing soup. You know, I really miss that soup. That soup used to really cheer me up. Let's make some soup." And everyone is really miserable after the Fire and when they try the soup they agree that it's great soup and makes you feel better. And then some enterprising folk in Ses'erakh realise that there's a market for Mathenite-style soup, and start sticking it on the menu for the returned exiles and their friends. And there's your soup.

And it's not like soup is particularly a Mathenite thing. I mean, they do good soups, but it's not the first thing that comes to mind when Mathenites think about Mathenite cuisine, which is probably more the grilled meats or those weird and vaguely gross cheeses that none of them particularly like but you couldn't do the festivals without them. It's just that some guy saw all these sad-faced exiles one winter and thought, "I can't send them home, but I can definitely make them some soup." Which I like, because it means it's a foodstuff that was always sort of fusion from the outset. There'd have been no "Mathenite soup" without a bunch of Cardassian exiles. There'd just be soup.

There's a Mathenite character in a very minor role in The Peacemakers.

6. What books have you read in the last month

Not a lot (it's been a tough month), unfortunately. I've only managed the latest volume of Case File Compendium (I believe it's Vol. 8 and I have to report that the book remains as ridiculous, plotless, stupid and braincell-killing as it was in the previous seven volumes) and I reread the first part of Trek's Millenium trilogy.

11. What non-fiction books do you like if any

I don't think I like non-fiction all that much - and definitely not in a way that involves my trying to find any to read for myself. But I do read quite a lot, about history, and politics, and law, and economy, and pop culture, and philosophy, and science. Though they're usually handed to me as gifts or recommendations.

14. Do you ever mark/ear dog books you own

Nope, never. It annoys me - and yes, partially because I wouldn't remember why I marked a specific part in the first place.

This may be overly generous of me, but Julian Bashir avoiding treatment for mental illness like the plague makes perfect sense when you consider the incredible degree of pathologisation we see leveled at the only other augments we see in ds9 and how that is used to limit their freedom. Like the one to one connection and looming threat is right there but, because no one comes out and says it, it goes over everyone's head (probably because they've never had to face that kind of pathologisation before). Like of course he's keeping that shit locked down, anti-augment bias is explicitly written into law, god forbid what isnt written down. All it takes is one or two psychs with a little bit of bias and he could be institutionalised, maybe for life, just for being a little traumatised.

Like this isnt your straight bf avoiding therapy because of toxic masculinity, this is a marginalised man in an extremely tenuous position surrounded by people who are constantly looking for An Excuse.

Oh absolutely. He knows perfectly well that all that stands between him and being locked up forever is one, maybe two psychs deciding that he is unstable. He could become violent. He could be a danger to others. And all because he's been through a shitton of traumatic experiences and possibly has PTSD and depression.

Of course he's going to protect himself by refusing treatment or to even admit that there might be a problem.
