Spirited Away: No Face —Aesthetic

No-Face's Character & Personality

No-Face is a Japanese spirit. Specifically, he's a Kaonashi, which is a "Faceless" yōkai in Japanese folklore. No-Face is capable of reacting to emotions and ingesting other individuals. This way, he can gain their personality and physical traits. No-Face is a lonely spirit who begins to follow Chihiro after developing an interest in her sincerity. His vocabulary consists of grunts and moans. Not generally knowing much about the Bathhouse or other spirits, No-Face learns by example and adapts to his surroundings. In the Bathhouse, he becomes exposed to the corruptive thoughts and greed of the workers. No-Face hoped to gain Chihiro's affection by being like those around her. Thus, when he swallows Aogaeru, he exhibits the frog's negative traits. No-Face then becomes brash, arrogant, loud and selfish creature who's obsessed with Chihiro. However, when Chihiro rejects his materialism, he becomes a hostile, monstrous and out-of-control being. After No-Face calms down, he becomes quite docile and is willing to obey orders. Eventually, he accepts Zeniba's proposal to be her apprentice.
