[GDCG] Thoughts on BSH after ep 394
Some thoughts on Baek Saheon, focusing on how he feels about Kim Soleum.

BSH in part 1 & 2
1.
During part 1, BSH is constantly intimidated and terrorized by KSE. At the same time, KSE saves his life multiple times.
BSH himself wonders about this. But he concludes that the psychopath is simply deriving some sort of enjoyment out of keeping him alive.

But… “......” Was Kim Soleum really a lunatic? To be more precise, why did he… save his life? In truth, he knew. In the gallery, Kim Soleum could have killed or sacrificed him multiple times, but did not do so. He did mess with him a few times, but at the end of the day… ‘No!’ It must have been for enjoyment. Because it’s more fun to keep him alive, to keep more variability in the situation! Baek Saheon quickly made his conclusion. He’d never met such a crazy person like this before in his life…

During part 2, BSH constantly is helpful to the Jisan Agent. This is because he helped him once and experienced the feeling of fulfillment that comes from successfully helping out someone.

This is usually something you learn as, like, a pre-schooler. Either BSH didn’t have the experience of realizing that it makes you feel happy to (for example) make breakfast for your family or something, or all his experience of feeling good about helping someone was suppressed by his later experiences of prioritizing himself and himself only for the sake of survival. (More might be revealed if we learn more about his relationship with his sister). I think the latter makes sense since to current BSH’s mind everything other than ‘survival’ is just background noise. Jisan Agent case only affected him this much bc it did involve the matter of his own survival.
In any case, BSH learns (or re-learns) it as an adult.
As a result, he keeps being helpful to the Jisan agent, the one who taught him that it can feel nice to save someone.
During hospital arc, KSE tries to extend this to helping others as well. He tries to generalize his lesson of “survival isn’t always a zero-sum game, you can help others without necessarily risking your own survival” to not just helping him but helping others as well. As a result BSH gets thanked by the guy who they helped, and he does experience a “strange feeling”. So there is a potential of BSH becoming more altruistic (as long as it doesn’t risk himself) in general and not just towards the Jisan Agent.
However, as far as we know, this hasn’t happened since the hospital arc, so at the moment this only exists as a potential. (Maybe he helped some other people during the 3 years but so far we don’t know.)
So far, all we know is that BSH’s list of who should survive went from ‘Me’ to ‘Me and Jisan Agent’.

Kim Soleum can solve ghost story mechanics from three clues and a bad feeling, but the possibility that someone cares about him remains, tragically, beyond the scope of his investigation.
Ch 391 mini chara analysis? (It’s kind of obvious tbh but I thought it fun to point out)
KSE has saved JNS before, and the fact that she’s so appreciative of it this time shows how lowly she thinks of herself.
the first time KSE saved JNS, she’s appreciative of it, but not to the same extent. It’s a bit ironic because her words are more extreme in 22 but you can feel the weight of it in 391; it’s to the extent that for me personally, it feels like she might become a strong ally regardless of practicality. maybe like a bsh pt 2, haha? A character that KSE will affect the morals/values of.
How come it doesn’t carry as much weight in the first time? Well, there’s tons of practical reasons for KSE to save JNS, and that’s how JNS interprets it. JNS is useful, after all, as evidence by her being in an elite team. In dangerous situations it’s often most practical to save useful teammates, because they increase the odds of survival and escape. Spinning this another direction, JNS can pay back the rescue by being useful, and that’s quite easy for her. Spinning this a third direction, she thinks the rescue is transactional, because she thinks Soleum expected a benefit (a useful teammate). Also, like, if she died then the team would screwed, considering the restrictions.
as a side note I think it’s sweet how way early on she tells Soleum to not be humble and just accept the things he’s done (phrased in a way that’s a statement and not praise, which is nice bc Soleum doesn’t particularly like praise, as briefly mention in ch 14). And then later, she ends up being the first person Soleum tells his honest thoughts to,,, and it must also be easy for that, too, surprisingly. After all she’s not babying him or discounting him or treating him more fragilely or anything. Even if she’s judging him in her mind (probs not, since she cares most about practically and she knows that his fear doesn’t change his skills), she doesn’t do anything about it. At times, it’s easiest to confide in people you know won’t act differently to you— although, well, I don’t know if that’s a factor for KSE at the moment. Moving on,
As of right now, JNS doesn’t think she has any use. Worse than being useless, she’s a burden. Saving her isn’t useful for KSE at all, in her eyes. A bit ironic because tbh it seems like KSE is relying on her a lot, emotionally speaking~ maybe she doesn’t count emotional uses as part of practicality? Well, anyway. In her perspective, there’s no transaction to the rescue, because there’s nothing she can give in return (and Soleum knows that, because she’s told him as such multiple times.) Instead of a mutual exchange of benefits, it’s purely a favor. And favors are the hardest to pay back, because there’s no clear idea of what compensation is.
Of course, maybe what she means is that she’ll also save KSE one time in the future when he’s a burden at time— aka, returning the favor exactly. But, who knows? Maybe it’s the first time she’s been helped when being a burden (and she must really care about whether she’s a burden, because she got a debilitating yet invisible debuff so suddenly, at a time when she could have been the most competent, based on her personality). If so, this could be the first step to challenging her view of transactional relationships. Who knows! I think it’d be fun either way.
to end, I would like to mention that KSE’s reason for saving her both times hasn’t… really changed? And he still thinks that saving her isn’t a big deal? Hahaha 370 chapters later and he still hasn’t internalized the worth of his actions. Anyway, it’s hard to tell if KSE understood the weight of her words this time. I think it’s a bit amusing to notice KSE’s potential obliviousness/forced ignorance in real time. It’s also cute that what KSE gets most out of it is worth/fulfillment for himself, without really thinking what it means to JNS.

have expressed in their own words and actions to KSE that he should be more concerned abt his own well-being before he starts worrying abt others

part 3 spoilers about the butterfly
Thinking about how realistic yet utterly depressing Jin Nasol’s situation is, she is effectively one of Daydream’s most competent employees. She’s an Elite team member even an Assistant Manager from the main branch, she’s been there for years, and considering her spending she was constantly running high ranked darkness’s. Yet she’s disabled, and will (as we’ve even seen) die without Daydream’s speciality pain meds, which cost such a ridiculous amount if she didn’t have to purchase them so often she would have a full stock of wish tickets.
What makes it worse is that even though she was so skilled, her entire survival was essentially reliant on two people’s good will and while yes it was a symbiotic relationship, Jin Nasol needed them specifically but they didn’t need her. Director Ho or A team leader, could have decided at any point that she was too much effort. That because of her chronic pain which made her constantly agitated and desperate, it’d be better to find someone less efficient but easier to work with. Even though it wasn’t a willing abandonment as we see in part 3 completely falls apart without the two of them, she almost dies alone in a prison cell, and that gavel could have come down at any point, Jin Nasol was living everyday knowing that.
She wasn’t like the other employees, that could have fallen to the bottom of the barrel and find a way to build everything back up with their own skills. She just falls no matter how talented or skilled she is, she couldn’t have done anything else.
Please gsgw let them find a way for her to get her pain relief and her own choice in what she wants to do without it being: Live this way vs Die this way.
Anyways capitalism is horrible and evil, and its even worse for disabled people, and Jin Nasol makes me depressed.
