(A/N) ...and I’m a super inactive bitch sorry! Wait, that wasn’t recording? Ah well, I guess I’ll have to talk about my problems some other time ;D Hope you enjoy! Had this written on paper for a while, just been busy and couldn’t find time to type it.
It was never too late to go for a walk, Roman decided, enjoying the cool wind whipping his hair around his face and burning his lungs. The trees towered above his, so wide that their branches entangled and created a canopy. The stars that did shine through the trees twinkled like diamonds, the faint moonlight just enough to allow him to rest his eyes on the autumn leaves that scattered the ground. He always loves the night and, although it saddened him that he couldn’t venture out during the day, he thought that the nature of the park was just, if not more, beautiful at night.
Roman decided to stop and sit on the roots of a particularly gnarled oak tree, tortured oak tree. He swung his rucksack off and sat, leaning his back on a rather comfortable spot between two knots in the wood. He continued to pull out a bottle of water, a penlight, a sketchpad and a couple of pencils. Taking a swig from his bottle he placed the tip of his pencil on the paper and began to draw.
He wasn’t sure what he was drawing yet but the night always gave him inspiration and he was excited to see what his creativity would conjure up this time. He took a deep breath and let his hand run along the paper.
Roman had only been drawing for about half an hour when he heard something light falling out of the tree across from where he was drawing. Usually, he would ignore these sounds, assuming they were from animals or what-not, but something about this made him feel uneasy. Abandoning his belongings, Roman decided to stand up and investigate the source of the disturbance.
After searching around the trunk of the tree for a couple minutes Roman found an empty plastic Starbucks cup. The moment he picked up the cup he felt a shiver run down his spine. He looked up at the tree branches above him. He could have sworn he had seen something move but decided that it was just late-night hysteria. Brushing the shiver off to be from the cold breeze he came to the conclusion that it has been tossed aside by some careless person with no regard for other life, and the noise was just some wild animal. Still a tad uneasy he went back to his belongings and continued to draw.
Roman continued to draw for another couple of hours before he was disturbed by the sound of a branch creaking above him. He jumped onto his feet, his head snapping upwards, and pulled his pocket knife out of his tracksuit. Just as he shone his penlight upwards a dark shadow fell on top of him.
Having blacked out momentarily Roman groggily propped himself up on his elbows and slowly propped his hand to his left temple, feeling a warm trickle oozing onto his fingers.
“Oh my god, Ro! Are you okay?” Roman squinted at the figure, his fist instinctively clenching tighter against the handle of the knife.
“Y-Yeah… I’m fine, I just-” The figure suddenly came into focus, the realization of the person’s identity pushing away all former grogginess.
“Remy? What the hell!” Despite Romans livid eyes Remy fell back giggling.
“Um, Surprise?” Remy was drinking out of another half-empty Starbucks cup that he handed to Roman.
“Sorry-not-sorry I drank most of it.” Roman rolled his eyes but took the drink anyway and stuck the straw in his mouth. His took a huge sip. It was extremely sweet and tasted faintly of mangoes. When he finished the drink he threw it into the nearby bin, landing it in perfectly, then turned back to Remy, both his hands placed firmly on his hips.
“Now. Care to tell me why you were spying on me?” Remy let out a slight huff.
“I don’t get to choose what missions I’m put on.” Roman raised an eyebrow and smiled.
“So the leader sent you on this mission.”
“I don’t get to ask questions!”
“After she specifically said that If we ever got caught within a hundred-yard radius of each other or you communicated with us in any way you would get shot.” Roman let out a chuckle at the stunned look on his face and Remy responded rather grumpily.
“Who are you meant to be? Sherlock?”
“No. You’re thinking of Logan.” Remy let out a laugh and Roman wrapped an arm around his shoulders.
“Now. Care to tell me the *real* reason you were spying on me?”
“Oh, it’s kinda a funny story,”
“Okay, fine! I’ll tell you, but promise not to laugh at me?” Roman nodded in return. Remy fidgeted for a minute before talking.
“I got a *really* important mission tomorrow and I didn’t want to mess it up, so I was practicing.” Roman sat still for a moment, blinking before he burst out laughing.
“Hey! You said that you wouldn’t laugh at me!”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry- It’s just that Virgil used to say the exact same thing. Also, you’ve been on dozens of missions before!” At the sound of Virgil’s name, Remy looked in the other direction, frowning.
“It’s whatever, I don’t really even care that much, I just wanted to stand out, you know?”
“Yeah, I do.” Roman quickly started grabbing all his things and chucking them into his rucksack.
“We never get to see each other anymore! Why did you have to leave the old guild?” Remy whined out, hugging Roman from behind and placing his head firmly on Romans shoulder.
“You know why. You could always come to join us instead.” Remy groaned and let go of Roman.
“You know I can’t do that. I’ve got too many friends here.”
“Patton is probably going to kill me if he realizes that I’ve been out again, and I know for a *fact* the old guild will kill you if they know we’ve been talking.” He buckled up his bag swung it over his shoulders, starting down the path home.
“Oh, and Remy?” Remy looked at Roman with a questioning look on his face
“You didn’t do half bad, just try to find a stronger branch next time, okay?” Remy rolled his eyes but smiled and Roman continued walking down the path home, not looking at him.
“Yeah yeah, I will. Good to see you again, Ro.” Rowan turned around to say a final goodbye to Remy but he had already disappeared back into the shadow branches above them. Roman let out a chuckle, knowing Remy was still in hearing range.
