Unidentified artist, Brunetto Latini, Livre du trésor, France, 13th century, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, ms. Français 566, f. 77v.
Returning for the transcription and translation of the section on the peacock, I tried to do a bit of palaeography, but I'm not very good at it, so for the Old French version I'll be using the transcription from the Albert Pauphilet edition of The Book of Treasures by Brunetto Latini, or as it is called in Old French, Li livres dou Tresor. For the modern French text I used the Bernard Ribémont and Silvère Menegaldo translation (sources below). Alas, the translation in English is made by me. The text from the manuscript seems to have some small variations as compared to the versions I found, but this is the best I can do for now.
CLXXI. - Dou Paon.
My translation:
169. On peacocks
The peacock is a beautiful bird with a peaceful gait. But it has a snake's head, a demonic cry, a sapphire-coloured breast and a magnificent multicoloured tail, which it takes extraordinary pleasure in displaying: so when it sees people admiring its beauty, it raises and spreads its tail, so that the spectators will praise it; but at the same time, it reveals the ugly part of its rear end, which it shows them rudely. It has nothing but contempt for its feet because of their ugliness. Its flesh is extremely tough and smells strong.
