Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923, Spain)

Sorolla was a prolific painter of people, landscapes and genre scenes. His virtuosic style combines fast brush strokes reminiscent of impressionism with an acute eye for capturing the spirit and movement of a scene.
His beach pictures are some of his most popular, and capture him at home with some of his favourite subjects: the Spanish land, lifestyle and culture; in addition to the blue seas and skies, earthy skin tone, and flowing white fabrics of boat sails and dresses that came to define his colour palette. His radically limited brushstrokes (some of his finest paintings are almost sketches) pointed towards 20th century trends, but his art was also rooted in 19th century realist depictions of everyday people.
He was a great painter and if you visit Barcelona you should go check his exhibition. If there is something that I love about this city is our museums and love for the art and history. Really recommend it

From a literary perspective
Arthur Conan Doyle has passed history as the writer of deductions. Edgar Allan Poe as the dark man with the dark raven. To many it may seem that such men would have little in common. And yet, it is by comparing them, by studying the intertextual content in their works, analyzing the influence that one had over the other, that we can see Doyle’s work from a different literary perspective.
Contrary to popular believe, Doyle wasn’t the first author to write detective stories. In fact, for many literature scholars the first detective story would be Sophocles’ “Oedipus Rex”. A tragedy about a man searching for a criminal and discovering the truth about himself. However, the real establishment of the genre (at least in English literature) happened in 1841 with the publication of Poe’s “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”. Edgar Allan Poe, most known for his poems and short stories about death, love, and deprivation, wrote what he called a series of "tales of ratiocination”. His detective, C. Auguste Dupin, inspired the creation of other great characters of the black novel, such as Maigrait, Poirot and the famous Sherlock Holmes. Holmes, in fact, is the character that resembles Dupin the most. The narrator of Dupin’s stories is never named, but still considered a close friend to Dupin, equating him to Holmes’ John Watson. Le chavalier Dupin spends most of his days smoking and sitting in his comfortable chair, only accepting cases when interested, similarly, again, to Holmes. And Dupin is contacted often by the Perfect of the Parisian Police, who can’t solve many cases because of his lack of imagination and rational deduction. So what’s the difference? What makes Sherlock Holmes so special?
It’s not the deductive method, as Poe has been considered by many, the best rational writer. It’s not the cases either, because through the history of literature we have seen many other brilliant cases in great crime novels. No, the greatest thing about Doyle’s detective stories is his detective. In Poe’s “tales of ratiocination” the main theme, the idea that drove the plot was the deductive method. As interesting as Dupin was, he was never the center of the story. However, Sherlock is. Doctor John Watson narrates a series of stories were two characters are fleshed out and defined. John Watson himself, and Sherlock Holmes. And it’s their relationship, their understanding of the cases and evolution through them that drives the stories. It is so that we come to have literary discussions about the unreliability of Watson’s narrations, the relationship between the characters and the clear resemblances between Sherlock Holmes and Oscar Wilde.
In short, after analyzing and comparing Dupin to Holmes, one can only come to distinguish one main difference: Dupin may be the logical, practical, smarter one, but Holmes has a heart to match it’s brains.

About tumblr starting to call everybody nazi
This is starting to really get on my nerves since I see it everywhere. And I’m sick of it. I’m half german, my granfather lived during the Nazi era, he was a 8 years old kid who was put in the Hitler Jugend, as if they where the boy scouts. If he had been older he probably had been sent to the front. My grand gran father was a nazi, he wasn’t in Germany when the Holocaust started, as he was working in Spain, and did not partake in any of the horrors. He was just somebody who voted the wrong party, as most Germans did at the time. His father was an anti-nazi, he hated them and feared them at the same time. My grandfather’s village was bombed, his house was the one of the two in his street that survived the bombing. In one night he lost his neighbours, friends and his earing on the left side. He was ten by then.
To the people who acuse everyone to be a nazi, do you actually know what the word meens? Have you studied them? Hace you met someone that survived the Holocaust? It seems to me that people are just shouting it like an insult to stop the conversations from happening. I know that things are getting crazy now, in the U.S., in Germany, in France... I also disagree with the all right parties. I’m against any party who’s politics are based on hatred. I’ve seen what hatred can do, my granfather has told me real horror stories about what hatred can do. Building a wall, persecuting immigrants, religious believes, races or minorities is deplorable. But not everyone that votes or defends a party actually stands for those things. And even if they do, how are you any better by insulting them and shutting down the conversation, instead of discussing the issues and trying to change this people’s mind. You don’t make the world better by calling someone a nazi. And you deffenetly are not a nazi just because of who you voted.
This is what nazi’s did. Whenever you call people nazis, you are saying they would do this. Think about that before you utter the word mindlessly. Try to speak with people, even when you don’t agree with them, instead of shutting the conversation down. The only way to change somebody’s mind is by adressing them with an open mind yourself. Who knows, maybe you learn something by doing so.
Help, I need somebody...
Hi, everyone, I’m quoting the Beatles in here not just for the fun of doing so, but because I would love to have help from some of you TJLCers. I had this idea not so long ago for a short story, fanfic, case, about Sherlock and John that would envolve mirrors, ballet, Tchaikovsky, confessions, dramatic irony, a dramatic reveal, a children story, a sword fight (because why not?), true love, and a little bit of explainations and fixer uppers of season 4. The problem is, I tend to make mistakes when it comes to working with characters that are not my own and my english is decent, but full of mistakes and repetitions. If I finish writing this story, I want to do it more than okey, I want it to be great, to be on point, on character, and as similar as possible with the Sherlock series and the Arthur Connan Doyle writings. Therefore, I would need people to help me with it, cowrite with me, or correct it, give new ideas or perspectives or just read it and tell me the flaws. Even artists would be greatly welcome to join in and illustrate the story. Of course, I can’t offer any type of monetary compensation for those who help, I’m only a literature student with quite a low income. But be ashured that you’ll get as much credit for your work as I give myself, even more so if you want to, and, if you want, I even put your name to one of the characters in the next book I publish. (Even thou it will be in spanish and published in Spain, so you probably will never get to read it). If you can’t help, I would also apreciate reblogging this. I really want to tell this story, I feel like I’ve got one of these fiew great ideas that only rarely come flying through my window, and I don’t want it to let it sweep away, so any help would be apreciated.

Yet, he didn’t. His days in that white, boring closet the doctors called a room where spend always and only around John. He played the violin to him, even though he probably couldn’t hear it. He composed two songs for him, one about loss and one about the hope of him awakening. He took Rosie to see him and read fairy tales to them. Stories with happy endings, where the knight was always on time to save the damsel in distress and the damsel never was shot. He read anything to John, actually: the news, his blog, the Silence of the Lambs novel, a book about astronomy… He sat next to the bed and saw James Bond movies with John, payed full attention for the first time and imagined what his best friend would say if he was awake.“
I know it starts on a sad note, but that is how season 4 seems to end. I really would apreciate any type of help.

I’m not the one to talk about politics, partly because I don’t want them to mix with my blog, partly because I hate 75% of the politivians I know. But this is to good a satire, to funny a joke, not to share it with the world. I adore my firends in the Netherlands for sending me the link.
The Night of the Hunter
Today I wanted to talk about one of my all-time favorite movies, because I have noticed that not many people actually enjoy it. It is beloved by critcs and me, but everytime I talk with a casual viewer, or I show it to someone I seem to get the same reactions: They thing it’s interesting, maybe even good or decent, but too slow, or too fake, or not that scary for a horror movie. So I supose this is me trying to explain what makes this movie so special, at least to me. I don’t know if this may change anybody’s mind about the flick, but I hope at least someone will watch it for the first time after reading my post and enjoy it. I believe it’s a movie worth remembering, not only by critics, but by cinema lovers in general.
“The night of the hunter” was the first and last movie ever directed by Charles Laughton. At the time it came out, it was disliked by critics and audiences alike, for being to horrifing and sickening. The irony that casual viewers nowourdays will considere this movie slow, and not scary enought, doesn’t pass me. It is true, this movie is not rich in jump scares or gore, similarly to Hitchcock’s films, it relays on ambiance, story and acting more then anything else. But yes, I will agree with those that say it isn’t scary. It’s not suposed to be. On the other side, it is haunting, which is a term often confused with scary. The movie in general, but specially Robert Mitchum’s perfomance, is haunting, fascinating and very fairytale a like.
The performances
In general, all the actors play their parts on point: The kids are charming, at parts annoying, scared and insecure... they act like real kids. (Allthought, apparently Laughton had a lot of problems with them). The mother passes through a well acted, very visual emotional journey. The old lady is simply a bad ass. And then there is the preacher, Robert Mitchum, that plays his role to perfection. It is without a matter of a doubt, Mitchum’s best perfomance. H eplays a marvelous villain, both creepy as f**k and appealing.. You want him to loose, yet you don’t want him to die.
And here is where the direction also shows it’s brilliance. Because as amazing as Mitchum is in this part, his character is not only personified for what he says and does:
A great part of his persona is also transmitted trhought the filming and the shadows and lights around him. A clear example are his hands, tatooed with the words love and hate. Everytime you are shown them, you are to notice them, because they simbolize the feelings of the character.
It is one of the greatest examples in movie history of the cinematic frase: “show, don’t tell.”
The fairytale
Another line that I heard a lot critizising this movie, was that it was predictable and didn’t look real. I always thoght this comments were funny, because I could understand someone not liking the movie because of the thematic, the slow paste or personal taste. However, the predictability and unrealness of the movie are purposly done so, and are a part of what makes this film different from so many othes of the same gender. This is a fantastic-realistic (realidad fantastica? I don’t know how you say it in english, but it’s a subgenre of modern literature) retelling of Hansel and Gretel. And it shows in the story, the cinematography and the at times childish, at times creepy soundtrack.
Stare at these images and ask yourself if it doesn't look like something out of a scary pop-up book, a fairy tale gone wrong, mixed with the worst of reality. Yes, the settings look fake, on purpose, but do they look bad? No, in fact the cinematography and editing are beautiful, marvelously made. They draw clear inspiration from the classis french impressionist cinema (people often forget that the cinema started in France and not in the U.S.A) and fantasy driven films such as la Belle et la Bête (1945). Moreover, the geberal ambiance ressembles the descriptions authors of the romantic or macabre such as Poe or Bécquer would write. That is what I love about this lovie. It is not a movie based on a book, rather a film that inmerses you inside a book. It has the feels of a creepy all time classic, fairy tale.

A rambling about love, and hate, and cinema
As we have seen throughout history, as we have seen in recent days, hatred is like a virus that spreads from person to person until it reaches the whole world. Even those who preach peace can be infected, even those who are on the right can get the fever. Love, on the other side, is hard. It is the body that fights against the illness, it is the cure that may never be found. However, there are those who stand for it and will do everything on their hands to help find it. So let me be, even if just for one day, that doctor. Let me help people have faith and believe that love does conquer all.
Let me help people understand the importance of being there for the other,
The joy that comes from making someone's wishes come true,
From standing for those that matter.
The greatness that comes from it,
Even when it's not corresponded,
Even when it may never end as wanted.
It never quite begins,
Or you have to let it go.
Because even when it's tragic and the end arrives,
Love is worth winning.

Love conquers all.
