Kylo Ren DID NOT use Rey as guard-fodder as he made his way to the throne.

Yes, he needed her—for multiple reasons! She took out a few guards (and this is no slight—KUDOS, REY—but a display of her raw power and inner strength). But Kylo protected her throughout this fight and took 3-to-1 guards as she took out 2-to-1 then 1-t0-1.]

At this moment, he told her to “hold on,” (@raven-maiden pointed this out in a meta, and lip-reader @madandmisquoted confirmed her reading). He was coming to help and protect Rey. 

And that protection turned that worried and alarmed face (as seen in the GIFs above) into this face of THIS beast (as seen in this photo below).

That throne room scene was an example of the perfection achieved when one is balanced in the Force. As Rian Johnson stated, the light side is selflessness and the dark side is protecting what is yours. 

I believe that Kylo was in the state of perfect balance in the Force (and even did so in his body language).

He literally balanced his body as he shifted his feet. (I don’t know how to make GIFs. If you do, please help this girl out down below. LOL.) 

While three guards surrounded him, he paused; and at the sight of Rey being wounded on the arm,  lost all CONCERN FOR HIS LIFE (selflessness aka LIGHT) and he rallied to go PROTECT WHAT IS HIS (aka DARK)!
