#[40S COMMERCIAL ANNOUNCER VOICE] WHAT’S BETTER THAN THIS? GALS BEING PALS
Fun fact: Though being gay in the 40s sucked, being gay in the military was easier, and pretty common. There were apparently, at one point in time time so many lesbians in the military that when they tried to crack down on it, the girls wrote back and said “Look I can give you the names, but you’ll lose some of your best officers, and half your nurses and secretaries.” And they pretty much shut up about it unless you were especially bad at subtlety. (Source: Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers. A good source for gay history from 1900s onwards.)
Sergeant Phelps worked for General Eisenhower. Four decades after Eisenhower had defeated the Axis powers, Phelps recalled an extraordinary event. One day the general told her, “I’m giving you an order to ferret those lesbians out.’ We’re going to get rid of them.”
“I looked at him and then I looked at his secretary. who was standing next to me, and I said, ‘Well, sir, if the general pleases, sir, I’ll be happy to do this investigation for you. But you have to know that the first name on the list will be mine.’
“And he kind of was taken aback a bit. And then this woman standing next to me said, ‘Sir, if the general pleases, you must be aware that Sergeant Phelps’s name may be second, but mine will be first.’
“Then I looked at him, and I said, ‘Sir, you’re right. They’re lesbians in the WAC battalion. And if the general is prepared to replace all the file clerks, all the section commanders, all of the drivers—every woman in the WAC detachment—and there were about nine hundred and eighty something of us—then I’ll be happy to make the list. But I think the general should be aware that among those women are the most highly decorated women in the war. There have been no cases of illegal pregnancies. There have been no cases of AWOL. There have been no cases of misconduct. And as a matter of fact, every six months since we’ve been here, sir, the general has awarded us a commendation for meritorious service.’
“And he said, ‘Forget the order.’
- The Gay Metropolis: The Landmark History of Gay Life in America
I’ve reblogged this before but it didn’t have these comments and HOLY HOT DAMN DID IT NEED THEM.
So, when someone sits down to write a fiction about Women commandos, and a Dudebro steps in to say “Huh, that is so unrealistic huh.”
Harold… oh, Harold…sit down, shut up, and stay out of our way.
History is infinitely gayer than a lot of people want to admit <3
History is generally speaking more interesting in every way than boring conservatives want to admit.
POSTING THIS AGAIN!!!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!!
Inclusive language is for everyone!!
Their boyfriend is their partner why is this hard to understand
Also, “partner” is just a good word? It implies an equal relationship where both of your work together in pursuit of something, whether that be life goals or just having fun together.
It’s a good word. People should use it more.
It also avoids the societal bias that husband/wife is a superior relationship to boyfriend/girlfriend. Because regardless of whether or not you are straight, not being married doesn't necessarily mean your relationship is any less close or important. Not everyone wants to or can get married, for various reasons, and that's okay. Off the top of my head, people on disability often can't get married without losing their benefits.
So normalizing the neutral term "partner" also benefits straight people and they should get into that habit. It's just good for everyone.
there was this version of take me to church that i heard a while a go and it was like
angrier??? and more intense is the only way i can describe it i may have imagined it

I love how the stage is underlit with fiery orange and there are bright white flashes of light from above. Really brings out his underworld/chaos vibe.

This is post is so my sexuality
So I just heard about “Primed: The Back Pocket Guide for Trans Men and the Men Who Dig Them.” It’s the first sexual health resource written by and for gay, bi and queer trans men/ transmasculine people, put out by Rainbow Health Ontario, and it’s a very frank guide that answers basically any questions you might have about safer sex. They’ve released it for free download here.
A similar guide geared towards trans women/ transfeminine people (though not really sexual orientation specific) is “BRAZEN: Trans Women’s Safer Sex Guide.”
“You fight like a girl.”

Why Xena is an amazing superhero: She dignifies what patriarchy belittles
People have pointed out before that Xena does not shame other women or shame men for being feminine. Zero percent fem-shaming. She values feminine characters and traits instead and actually learns from them.
There’s more…
You know how much slut-shaming Xena did? None. Not even her past and highly evil self got shamed for having sex.
You know how many emo feelings Xena had despite her capacity for extremely instrumental, strategic military action? All of them. All of the feelings.
You know how much having a woman as a life partner damaged Xena’s self-identity? None. It actually just made it more awesome.
You know how many seconds it took Xena to deal with her cisgender privilege and act in pragmatic solidarity with a trans woman? Less than ten seconds.
Xena had more respect for her horse than most action heroes have for their own lives.
She offered more and more dignity to herself and other people throughout the show. It was part of her character’s development, part of her heroism.
And that is another way of articulating why Xena is so awesome.
All of this is spot on. I need to do a re-watch of this now that I’m aware of the social and pop culture norms this show challenges. When I first watched it, I loved it, but couldn’t tell you why other than “it’s awesome”. Now I can. This^ is a start.
I laughed so hard at this I accidentally exited the Tumblr app and when I reopened, Tumblr had bolted back to the top of the feed, so I just rage scrolled through every single thing both posted in the last hour and that I scrolled past in the last hour to find to present this incredible tiktok to you, my dear followers. Self care 101
Okay reblogging this again because this scene literally changed my life
funny how when a “straight” person finds themselves surrounded by a bunch of gay and lesbian and bisexual friends they often end up realizing they aren’t straight it’s almost like heteronormativity and being surrounded by heteronormativity keeps people in the closet and being in an environment where gay love is more normalized allows people to connect with parts of themselves they otherwise probably wouldn’t be able to
in spite of it all, you survived
SOS I told the girl I like that I want a butch gf and she said "I'm butch" and I got really flustered and went to go make dinner for us (bc I'm at her place tonight)
uhh are you sure y’all arent on a date right now?
