“I love the fact that I can make people happy, in any form. Even if it’s just an hour of their lives, if I can make them feel lucky or make them feel good, or bring a smile to a sour face, that to me is worthwhile.” —Freddie Mercury
Brian’s and Roger’s commentary of Queen Live in Montreal (1981) during “Now I’m Here”
Perfect combination of a clear compliment and a slight insult. They’re such brothers I’m weak

HUMAN INNOVATION
Happy 10 years to this post, but more importantly, happy 10 years of exploration to New Horizons. I wish I knew this post would take off before I posted it without absolutely any information whatsoever, but I guess that’s how things work.
This isn’t just about image quality; it’s that before this mission, we had no way of knowing what Pluto would be like. We didn’t even know its true size. We thought maybe it was geologically dead, too cold for anything to be going on. But in 2015 the New Horizons probe flew by, imaged Pluto and its family of moons, and gave us a view we never had before.
Since I posted this in 2015, New Horizons has traveled over five and a half billion miles. It showed us that Pluto has glaciers of frozen nitrogen, it has cryovolcanoes that spew slushy water ice, it has a hazy blue atmosphere that’s slowly escaping out into space. There is internal heat that is driving geological change to this day. Pluto is dynamic and alive!
New Horizons is still actively collecting data, way out there. It whizzed past the Pluto system in just a few hours, it flew past another distant Kuiper Belt object a few years later, and continues its outward trajectory as it approaches the boundary of our solar system. It could join the Voyager probes in observing interstellar space - something incredibly rare and valuable. The spacecraft itself is just halfway through its projected mission lifespan, but its mission could get shuttered with the 2026 federal budget cuts. And if it gets turned off, it cannot be turned back on again.
Working in informal science education these days is unsettling, mainly because I feel like I’m watching support for our existence evaporating in front of my eyes. I don’t know how to convince the growing anti-science population that knowing more about the universe around us is important. That investing in space exploration leads to advances in technology that help us at home. That learning more about the worlds around us teaches us so much about our own planet. That knowing more about our own planet, our only home, is deeply vital.
There will probably always be more that we don’t know about our universe than what we do know. It will always be worth asking questions and seeking answers. Science is the medium that fills all nuance of the universe. Not to sound like a total hippie, but everything really IS connected. Physics shows us that. Knowing more can only help.

god, GOD Freddie Mercury was such a fucking badass
This doesn’t do the moment justice. He took the swig of vodka, said “I’ll fucking do it darling”, and then ABSOLUTELY NAILED IT in one fucking take
Mood for 2019: “I’ll fucking do it, darling.”
Reblog for Freddie Mercury level belief in yourself this new year!
I’ll fucking do it, darling
When you are a classical musician and the public asks you to play Queen …
@hieronymus-bush … although I’m not sure what you’ll think of it 😆
Holy hell. He has amazing technique AND he didn’t just transcribe the piece to piano, he essentially composed classical music (and honestly some neo-classical, lol) based on the melody. Plus, he kind of looks like Freddie.
People in the 1800s would've gone apeshit over this in the concert halls
Reblogging to watch later...
I think this guy just invented shredding on a piano
"Why is the song called that" "Oh, that's why"

Still laughing at Brian May offhandedly writing the greatest understatement in the history of academia in his astrophysics doctoral dissertation:
Ah, yes - “various pressures.” Like being one of the greatest guitarists ever and playing/writing/singing for the most legendary rock band of all time.
Those various pressures.
VARIOUS PRESSURES

im not sure how many of u were in the queen fandom (and im sure it makes total sense to many of u that i was) but this was genuinely THE funniest in joke
Happy 77th Birthday, Brian May!
19th July 1947
what a legend
Nothing can match this energy
fun fact: these are actual vocal warm ups he would do, and used this as a way to interact with the audience while being able to stretch while performing .
also he was a witch and he used it as a spell like look at that power
-Anyway it gives us enormous pleasure to introduce the next combo who are, uh… -Queen. -Her Majesty, Queen!

I know we say “this is a Renaissance painting” a lot, but THIS is a hell of a Renaissance painting:
