Nicki Minaj is a great example of an artist who doesn’t let awards or accolades define her! She brought life back into a dying genre of music and opened doors for others, yet she’ll never get the credit she deserves. Sadly that’s the art world in a nutshell. However there’s a lesson in everything! Just like Nicki we as artists have to keep pushing ourselves to be the best we can be whether we’re awarded for it or not. Because it’s not about us but, it’s about inspiring others.

This is for all of the artists who work hard to inspire and don’t get the credit they deserve! Recognition doesn’t define you or your work, it speaks for itself! You’d be surprised how many people’s lives you’ve touched WITHOUT being celebrated for it.

Mulan x Jane Zhang

花木蘭十字珍張

When I was looking for the RIGHT woman to be my Mulan I wanted to make sure I represented her correctly. So, I looked up some Chinese singer/songwriters. Not many came up I’m gonna be completely honest 😬 but, the first to catch my eye was Jane Zhang! So as I usually do I looked up some of her music and I found the video for Dust My Shoulders Off. Inspired isn’t even a strong enough word to describe how I felt watching that video! The artistic visuals along with the lyrics of the song made me feel like I could make it through ANYTHING! Then I realized that’s EXACTLY what I’m looking for in my Mulan! It’s really amazing who and what you’ll find when you step out of your comfort zone! I would really appreciate it if you all would check out the time lapse for the drawing as well. 🖤

Cinderella x Kelly Rowland

The Blue Rose - a symbol of love

I think Kelly is one of the greatest role models we have for young women of color. She has grace, style, but she’s not afraid to be her authentic COUNTRY self!

Ever since I saw Brandy Norwood portray Cinderella in Roger and Hammerstein’s Adaptation I’ve always thought “Cinderella is a Black Woman! PERIOD!” When I think of a black woman with beauty and grace but also the youthfulness to be someone such as Cinderella I immediately thought of Kelly! A true rose in a bush of thorns!

When I look at Julia Jones I see strength, vulnerability, and adventure all at once. I felt like she was the perfect person to be my adaptation of Pocahontas!

As much as I dislike the Disney film Pocahontas, I do like the music and the message behind it! Appreciation is KEY!

I think Normani would be an amazing live action Tiana for a few reasons. She grinds for everything she wants. She doesn’t need a man to save her. She’s from New Orleans! Let’s not forget she can sing and dance! So here’s my interpretation of how this crossover could look!

‘The Kids Are Alright’ This album for me is a staple of my youth. It’s something I’ll never grow tired of! It has songs for every single mood and/or trial I’ve experienced. Not to mention, it’s one of my top 3 for the year!

‘Princess Shuri’ Shuri is last but not least in this Women of Wakanda series because of her intelligence. Shuri is only 16 years old in the film and she oversees her entire country’s technological advancement. She’s proof of not only women, but young women of color being able to do anything they set their minds towards. It makes me happy that young black girls can see that positive representation on screen.

‘Queen Ramonda’ Ramonda is third in this series because of how she showed her strengths in a subtle way. Her husband passed and she still didn’t mourn publicly. She supported the crowning of her son as the new king of Wakanda. That is why she is a true Queen.
