it' so so funny that buffy is canonically into kinky sex, but she's also a prude, so she genuinely believes that liking kink makes her evil. i know that she's like this because of the show is misogynistic, but it's still such a silly belief for her to have. like she's going "oh no! i like using handcuffs during sex! clearly i'm a monster!!!" and she's dead serious about it

it really is crazy how for many years before i watched btvs i heard ppl talk about how tara dying was bury your gays and it was so cruel and unfair etc and then i watched it and it WAS bury your gays and it WAS extremely sad and upsetting but it also feels Correct on a story level in a way that’s hard to articulate fully. there are a few places in s6 where the show chickens out of doing what feels logical and true for the story and if tara hadn’t died or if she’d come back it would have felt like another chickening out

exactly!! like it is part of a larger pattern yes, but within the narrative of buffy, where else can the story go? even if they had continued to write willow as straight after oz left the show, i fully believe a male version of tara would have died in s6 too because that's what the narrative demands from a character in that role. willow resurrected buffy, so she has to lose someone of equal importance to her. tara understands buffy as an orphan, so she has to die. xander just lost his most serious love interest (a self-inflicted loss but still), so willow has to lose hers too because the show is leveling out the scoobies; buffy might not have just lost a love interest, but she just lost one of the most important people in her life. and like you said, bringing her back would be chickening out. it would be undoing a solid plot beat. the way tara dies leaves much to be desired, but the fact that she dies is the logical narrative conclusion.

Do people not understand why the scoobies thought Buffy was in hell??

It seems very clear to me they don’t think she was in hell because she deserved to be there. That’s like so nonsensical idk how people think that (and yet I see people say it).

They think she’s in hell for a couple reasons (at least from my perspective):

1) the portal Buffy jumped through was initially created to get Glory back to Hell. Yes, it was stated that it would break the barriers between all dimensions (not just hell) but it was primarily conceptualized as a portal to hell. Also,

2) your best friend jumps through a portal you KNOW goes to hell. You find her lifeless body. You’re sick with grief. The scoobies are obviously going to assume the worst from the situation, because the worst is quite plausible and very scary.

It just gets to a point with the scoobies hate. Like I think a lot of people forget that they were all, what, 19? 20? when this whole thing went down. They were barely adults but I think some people forget that because of the immense power the gang wields.

I think it's time to exchange "you can only grow when you're uncomfortable" with "you can't grow without sometimes being uncomfortable, but you can't thrive without also experiencing safety and comfort." Getting better isn't supposed to be a process of constant suffering. We shouldn't aim for a state of constant discomfort in the name of growing as a person, and if you're deeply uncomfortable all the time then something is probably really wrong
